'This is not a World Cup for the people': residents in host cities sound alarm over housing affordability
Organizers fear Fifa event will deepen crisis as short-term listings proliferate and sweeps displace #unhoused people. More than 10 million people are expected to visit the US for the World Cup this summer. However, where and how to accommodate these visitors has been a concern among residents and affordable housing advocates in host cities from Seattle to Atlanta.. Hotels remain under-booked in America's 11 host cities, while short-term rental listings in some cities have increased by as much as 30% in recent weeks. To incentivize homeowners and landlords to become hosts during the World Cup, platforms such as Airbnb are offering a $750 sign-up bonus, with some rental listings already reaching $6,000 a night. Advocates worry that an increase in short-term listings will lead to a tighter rental market and higher rents for residents in host cities.. .

Strictly speaking, the one does not contradict the other, as each chiefly addresses different topics: the unhoused in public spaces on the one hand, public drug use on the other.
Yet a difference in attitude is certainly present here, as well as a difference in the understanding of freedom as a value.
I don't have a pat answer about the "correctness" of either approach. I do know that progressives should be thinking hard about these matters
and be ready for challenging discussion about public space, inclusion, and the justifiability or otherwise of paternalism with regard to housing, drug use, and mental illness.#PublicSpace #ThirdSpaces #Unhoused #Homeless #DrugUse #Freedom #PoliticalThought #PoliticalPhilosophy #Politics #MentalIllness

As It Shutters, Beleaguered Shelter Operator Says All 175 Staff Will Lose Their Jobs
By Andrew Schwartz
April 10, 2026Excerpt: "Late last month, WW reported that two homeless shelters funded by the city Portland would close after the nonprofit contracted to run them shuttered amid allegations of fiscal mismanagement.
"In a WARN notice posted publicly this week, that nonprofit, Sunstone Way, indicated the scale of the impact for its own staff: By the end of June, all 175 of them would lose their jobs.
"In the notice, Sunstone Way HR said it had 'anticipated the city of Portland would continue operating the shelters that Sunstone Way currently operates.'
"Instead, it said, it had just received notice from the city to the contrary. The 96-bed Centennial shelter that Sunstone Way had operated was now expected to close by April 30. A 38-unit pod shelter complex on Northeast Weidler Street in the Lloyd District would close altogether.
"Meanwhile, the letter added, Sunstone Way’s Naito shelter would, after June 30, continue to operate with new management.
"The resulting layoffs encompass a range of vocations. According to the notice filed with the state, workers losing their jobs include a mix of full-time, part-time and on-call shelter staff as well as case managers, office workers, and 41 people in management.
"Sunstone Way’s troubles date back years, WW has reported, and the nonprofit had been losing shelter contracts lately with both the city and Multnomah County. But its problems escalated rapidly in the period before it said it would shutter entirely. "

https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2003/05/08/16091401.phpThe bigotted theory here, is that ALL #unhoused people who get assistance will just go out get high and just live off benefits.

Just saw this story on the local news. Let me guess... The deceased went to the #WinterWarmingShelter to find it closed, then froze to death. Also, allegedly the shelter has 37 employees. You mean to tell me all of them called in sick when there was #WinterWeather? NO EXCUSE!

So, what this does NOT address is the issue of staffing, or lack thereof! Maybe let a few unhoused folks live there, and then you'll have some staff! PLUS, the other issue is how far away from the downtown #PortlandME area (5 miles) it is! The same with #MaineNeeds (4 miles), where folks can get tents and clothing. Everything used to be centralized at #PrebleStreet, downtown, but noooo. Can't have homeless folks setting up tents near Whole F*cking Foods, can we?!!
