  4. 20th century photos of #Mexican being rounded up and sent back highlight how mass #deportations are nothing new

No caption is needed to explain what kind of life this is. It's the same visual world that Dorothea Lange and her FSA colleagues were documenting up and down #California at the time

Except the families in these particular frames were Mexican, and many of them would soon be forced out of the country entirely – regardless of whether they held US citizenship.

  5. "On 26 July, the day before #TPS holders lost their work permits, CBS News reported that #ICE was targeting Springfield for a ‘potential arrest and #deportation blitz’.

"Now the blitz has arrived – by post. Over the past two weeks, scores of #HaitianImmigrants have received ‘call-in’ letters summoning them to ICE offices near Cincinnati, more than an hour’s drive away."

  10. “Evidence suggests that ICE did not transfer Rümeysa (Ozturk) to a Louisiana detention facility due to a lack of bed space in New England, as the government has claimed, but instead in an attempt to hand-pick the courts that will decide her case. These actions raise serious questions about the fairness and integrity of our immigration enforcement system and underscore what is at stake for all of us.” —Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley. #ICE #deportations #legal #deportation #kidnapping #TheSquad #Democrats #resistance #resist

  11. When Judge Hendrix did not grant their request quickly — & later rejected it entirely — the #ACLU lawyers filed a similar request to the US Court of Appeals for the #FifthCircuit in New Orleans.

The lawyers then filed an emergency petition to #SCOTUS, asking the justices to step in & issue an immediate pause on any #deportations because many of the #Venezuelan men had “already been loaded on to buses, presumably headed to the airport.”

  12. Team Trump Is Gaming Out How to Ship #USCitizens to #ElSalvador

Trump officials are talking internally about #denaturalizing #AmericanCitizens — and potentially sending some to #ElSalvador

By Nikki McCann Ramirez, Asawin Suebsaeng, Andrew Perez - April 12, 2025

"Donald #Trump and his White House have moved to deport #GreenCard holders for espousing #ProPalestinian views, shipped hundreds of #migrants to a notorious #Salvadoran #MegaPrison without due process (in defiance of a judge’s order), and are now publicly musing about sending United States citizens to prison in El Salvador.

"Trump said last weekend he would 'love' to send American criminals there — and would even be 'honored' to, depending on 'what the law says.' White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed this week that the president has discussed this idea privately, too, adding he would only do this 'if it’s legal.'

"El Salvador’s president, #Nayi Bukele, has for months been offering to hold U.S. citizens in his country’s prison system, which he has turned into 'a judicial black hole' rife with 'systematic #torture,' as one #HumanRights advocate recently told Rolling Stone.

"Legal experts agree that sending American citizens to prison in El Salvador would be flagrantly illegal under both U.S. and international law — and that the idea itself is shockingly #authoritarian, with few parallels in our nation’s history.

"The Trump administration is indeed discussing this idea behind the scenes, two sources familiar with the matter confirmed to Rolling Stone. In their most serious form, these conversations have revolved around attempting to denaturalize American citizens and deport them to other countries, including El Salvador.

" 'You can’t deport U.S. citizens. There’s no emergency exception, there’s no special wartime authority, there’s no secret clause. You just can’t deport citizens,' says Steve Vladeck, a legal commentator and law professor at Georgetown.

" 'Whatever grounds they try to come up with for denaturalization or #expatriation, the one thing that is absolutely undeniable is that people are entitled to individualized processes, before that process can be effectuated.'

"In the United States, the grounds to strip a naturalized individual of their citizenship encompass serious material offenses. They include: committing #treason or #terrorism, enlisting in a foreign military engaged in opposition to the United States, or lying in applications for citizenship or as part of the naturalization process."

  14. This is what happened when MAGA people at CPAC thought I was one of them.

Exiled from the press pen, I was just part of the audience, a space previously off-limits to reporters.
To say the least, it was enlightening.
On Friday, for instance, I listened to a main-stage speech from Chris #Miller, a Republican running for governor of West Virginia.
Because of its tax-exempt status, CPAC bans speakers from openly campaigning there, so he was listed on the program simply as “businessman.”

Like virtually every other speaker at the event, Miller devoted several of his allotted five minutes to railing against #transgender #healthcare.
“Woke doctors are literally making boys into girls,” he declared.
“They’re practicing #mutilation, not medicine. They should be in prison.”
At that point, a burly man in a giant black cowboy hat sitting next to me leaned over conspiratorially and proclaimed,
“I think we should #hang them all! I really do.”
And he laughed like we were in on the same joke.
I confess that I was too cowardly to tell him I was with the left-wing fake news

Later, during a speech by South Dakota Governor Kristi #Noem, I was sitting next to a woman in full-on MAGA gear.
When Noem declared, “There are some people who love America, and there are some people who #hate America,” my neighbor gave me a small heart attack.
“Get the FUCK OUT!” she yelled furiously, ready to rumble. “Get the FUCK OUT!”
Meanwhile, the old man in the camo Trump hat next to her had somehow fallen asleep.

In the hotel lobby outside the CPAC main stage, the right-wing cable network Real America’s Voice had set up a studio.
#Bannon spent most of the conference holding court there and interviewing various MAGA celebs like Kash #Patel, who President Donald Trump had once put in charge of counterterrorism at the National Security Administration, or Rep. Byron #Donalds (R-FL), the rare Black conservative in the mix.
The studio often drew a crowd that rivaled that of some of the speakers on the main stage. It certainly rivaled the convention in volume.

While I was taking in the spectacle, a middle-aged man in a gray suit came up to me and pointed to a nearby 7-foot-high poster of Tucker #Carlson’s face.
“Do you know why that’s here?” he asked.
I explained that it was an ad for Tucker: The Biography, a book written by Chadwick Moore, a gay journalist and former liberal.
“Oh, I see,” he replied. The man clearly wanted to keep talking, asking me what I was here for, which was unusual since in the past my press badge said it all.
My inquisitor had come to #CPAC to see what people were saying about school choice and was disappointed to discover that the answer to that question was nothing.
Education policy, he lamented, was nowhere to be found at this event. Indeed, what passed for policy discussions at CPAC this year was largely limited to mass #deportations and attacks on #trans athletes.
The sober panels about the national debt, balancing the budget, or Social Security reform that once commanded top billing were a relic of another era before CPAC became an extension of Trump Inc., devoted to all the MAGA grievances like racial #equity, the evils of #windmills, or bans on gas #stoves.
When I finally was able to explain that I was a reporter who’d been denied a press pass, the man launched into an earnest yet incomprehensible spiel about how the government is #censoring people. Politely, I fled into the crowd watching Bannon.
