Synopsis (via Letterboxd):
In 1850 Oregon, when a backwoodsman brings a wife home to his farm, his six brothers decide that they want to get married too.
My Thoughts:
Adam Pontipee heads into town to resupply, and while he’s at it, find a woman to marry. He succeeds in quickly wooing Milly, a woman who wants to escape the crowds of town for the romance of the backwoods. Milly is surprised to learn that Adam lives with his six younger brothers, all of whom are rambunctious and uncouth. But the headstrong Milly sets to “civilizing” them. This only makes the younger brothers want wives of their own. But can they stop fighting long enough to not scare off the young women and their families?
Now I went into this movie expecting the sexual politics and gender essentialism to be on the wrong side of the Women’s Liberation movement. But I was still aghast that a major part of the movie is Adam leading his brothers into town town to abduct six women, taking inspiration from Plutarch’s “Rape of the Sabine Women.” If there’s any consolation about this movie is that it’s played as a satire of backwoods yokels with Milly, the townspeople, and ultimately admitting that what they did was wrong. This is undercut though by the young women falling in love with the brothers anyway.
This is probably not a movie that most modern viewers are going to react to with anything but horror. But despite its flaws it does have some excellent choreography (most of the cast are professional dancers) both for dance number and for all the fighting. The barn raising dance stands out as a spectacular MGM musicals piece. But I really liked the “Lonesome Polecat” number where the brothers’ work on chopping logs is worked into the choreography.
As an aside, I remember that back in the 1980s there was a Seven Brides for Seven Brothers tv series when I was a kid, which included a very young River Phoenix.
