  4. Artist to Artist: Ali Chahrour

Felix Meritis, Saturday, June 13 at 03:30 PM GMT+2

Diana Al-Halabi & ghenwa abou fayad

How do you continue working when the reality of war finds itself next to your rehearsal space? What is it like to create art amidst destructive forces? And how does the current situation in Lebanon influence the work of Lebanese artists in The Netherlands? During this Artist to Artist, a collaboration between Felix Meritis and Holland Festival, three Lebanese artists discuss these questions and the importance of sharing stories that often remain in the background.

Lebanese artist Ali Chahrour is part of Holland Festival with his multidisciplinary dance performance When I Saw the Sea. In his work, he connects personal and collective stories with themes such as love and war. During this Artist to Artist he will be joined in conversation by cross-disciplinary artists Diana Al-Halabi and ghenwa abou fayad.

    Line-up

    Ali Chahrour

Dancer and choreographer Ali Chahrour (Beirut, 1989) has developed a unique movement language that breaks away from Western codes and models. This language reflects his cultural background and the political, social, and religious context in which he works. In an earlier series of performances, part of his “Death” trilogy, he brought funeral rituals to life, combining tradition with a sharp sense of modernity. He later began a new series centered on the theme of “love,” including Told by My Mother, which was presented at Holland Festival in 2025.

Chahrour’s work is characterized by a combination of lyrical poetry and intensely intertwined bodies. His performances have been presented at the Festival d’Avignon (2016, 2018, and 2022) as well as at numerous other festivals worldwide.

    Diana Al-Halabi

Born in Lebanon in 1990, Diana Al-Halabi is a Rotterdam–Beirut–based interdisciplinary artist working primarily with film and painting. Through an intersectional feminist lens, her practice navigates the entanglement of the personal and the political, challenging top-down structures of power — from the patriarchal gaze and institutional violence to bureaucracy, settler colonialism, migration, and visa regimes. Her recent research, “Famine and Hunger Strikes: Decolonizing the Digestive System,” explores the politicization of the digestive system as a form of bottom-up resistance.

Al-Halabi’s work spans film and painting, with her 2022 film, “The Disaster Cannot Be Contained,” screening at international festivals, including IFFR, and winning Best Short Film in the national competition at the Beirut Shorts International Film Festival. In 2023, she received the IFFR RTM PITCH Award for her short film “The Battle of Empty Stomachs,” which premiered at IFFR 2024, Raindance Film Festival (UK), and Blackstar Film Festival (USA).

    ghenwa (noiré) abou fayad

ghenwa (noiré) abou fayad is a Lebanese cross-disciplinary artist, performer, and installation practitioner. Their work explores the politics of language, oral history, and repetition through sound, storytelling, and improvisation. Using an electro-acoustic setup, ghenwa plays the bouzouqi, sings, and plays the synths to weave together socio-political narratives, memory, and everyday survival, often treating performance as a living archive shaped by embodied experience.

Their practice extends into collaborative and pedagogical formats, including projects such as Hacked Orchestra which she initiated then collaborated on with Hackers & Designers (2024) – which , a collaboration with Hackers and Designers culminating in a sonic presentation at the Muziekgebouw, they facilitated the Insurgent Learning Workshop (2024), and later co-lead Voice as Legacy: Tracing the Unwritten (Sonic Acts x SALWA Foundation, 2025).

Their ongoing sound research uses a dactylo (Arabic typewriter) as an instrument, investigating the gendered history of typing as feminized labor and its sonic potential. At the moment, ghenwa is working on producing their first debut EP entitled ‘daken – sombre’.

  8. Hear Here!

Melkweg, Saturday, June 20 at 07:00 PM GMT+2

On World Refugee Day, we invite you to Hear, Here! The festival where we meet each other through music, stories, and conversations.

Hear, Here is a night at the Melkweg where you don’t just come to watch, you come to take part. Organised by people with a refugee background, undocumented people, and ASKV, this festival welcomes people from all backgrounds, especially undocumented people and those with a refugee background.

One moment you’re on the dance floor, the next you’re listening to a powerful story. First you learn some dabke dance moves together, then you hear someone share what it’s like to build a life in a new country or to live without residence papers. The night moves back and forth between energy, music, and moments that make you pause and listen. The choice is yours.

Throughout the evening you’ll meet new people, have fun, and discover stories you may not have heard before. Music, dance, and different cultures come together in one space. Between the beats, you’ll hear the experiences of people who had to leave their home countries or who are living here without official status. You get to know each other not only by listening, but also by dancing, laughing, and sharing something together.

Hear, Here is for anyone curious about other people and their stories. Come for the vibe, stay for the encounters. You might go home with a new song in your playlist, a new dance move, or simply a story that stays with you.

Tickets are free for people with a refugee background and undocumented people. For everyone else, we ask for a small contribution to help cover the costs.

  15. FRED FRITH, TIM HODGKINSON & LIZ ALBEE (US/UK/DE) + LUKRAAK (Marcus Wärnheim & Thomas Jaspers)

OCCII, Tuesday, October 20 at 08:30 PM GMT+2

A night of Total Music #2:: FRED FRITH, TIM HODGKINSON & LIZ ALBEE (US/UK/DE) + LUKRAAK (Marcus Wärnheim & Thomas Jaspers)

    – a dazzling celebration of the unexpected – contemplative and ecstatic, unruly and gloriously alive –

FRED FRITH + TIM HODGKINSON + LIZ ALBEE (US/UK/DE)
A meeting of three outstanding improvisational musicians who understand sound as an open territory. Guitar legend Fred Frith – co-founder of Henry Cow and a defining figure in experimental music since the 1970s – encounters Tim Hodgkinson, a comrade from those radical early days and an tireless explorer of improvisation, composition, and sound anthropology. Joining them is Liz Allbee, a Berlin-based trumpeter and sound artist who transforms her instrument into a vibrating resonant body of breath, electronics, and material experimentation. A fully improvised trialogue – raw, poetic, and unpredictable.

The combination of Frith‘s prepared guitar/string work, Hodgkinson‘s intense reed work/composition, and Albee‘s trumpet/electronics represents a high-level intersection of veteran avant-garde and experimental improvisation.

Multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser Fred Frith has been making noise of one kind or another for more than 50 years, starting with the rock collective Henry Cow, which he co-founded with Tim Hodgkinson in 1968.
Fred is best known as a pioneering electric guitarist and improviser, song-writer, and composer for film, dance and theater. Through bands like Art Bears, Massacre, Skeleton Crew, the Fred Frith Guitar Quartet, Cosa Brava, and now Fremakajo he has stayed close to his roots in rock and folk music while branching out in many other directions.
Fred has performed works by and sometimes alongside composers Alvin Curran, Meredith Monk, Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, and Christian Wolff; improvised with Lotte Anker, Derek Bailey, Han Bennink, Peter Brötzmann, Lol Coxhill, Janet Feder, gabby fluke-mogul, Tim Hodgkinson, Joëlle Léandre, Phil Minton, Ikue Mori, Butch Morris, Bob Ostertag, Evan Parker, Zeena Parkins, Paula Sanchez, Susana Santos Silva and Camel Zekri, to name a few; and—as session musician—recorded on albums by, for example, Brian Eno, The Residents, Robert Wyatt, The Swans, Violent Femmes, Material, Negativland, John Zorn, Matthew and the Unfortunates, and Half Japanese.
    https://www.fredfrith.com/live/

Tim Hodgkinson (b. 1949) studied social anthropology at Cambridge, and co-founded the politically and musically radical group HENRY COW with Fred Frith in 1968. In addition to composing, he has a long involvement in improvisation, and came back to anthropology in the 1990’s with research into music and shamanism in Siberia.
As an improvising musician on reeds and lap steel guitar Tim Hodgkinson has performed all over the world with many of the most acclaimed artists in the field, and continues to be fully engaged in the celebrated Konk Pack trio with Roger Turner and Thomas Lehn. In 2009 he released KLARNT – a CD of solo clarinet improvisations.
    http://www.timhodgkinson.co.uk/

Liz Allbee is a trumpet player who doesn’t play the trumpet all that often. Or at least, not the regular one. Instead, she frequently opts for a quadrophonic trumpet of her own design, as well as her voice and a myriad of self-made objects. The case in point is her recent album Breath Vessels, made using various glasses, pots and dismantled second-hand instruments which produce a surprisingly melodious drone.
Often radical, Allbee is also an economic composer and improviser: prudent layering of loops provides a smooth passage towards trance. An uneasy one – since Allbee’s inspiration comes from recent events like the sinking of the ship Adriana with hundreds of migrants on board in 2023, or from a withering observation the problems of our planet started when humans evolved opposable thumbs. A consoling one – since her work is conceived as new folk music, driven not by nostalgia but by a sense of community.
    https://lizallbee.net/

    LUKRAAK
Lukraak plays post-silly music of crooked beauty. Using alto saxophone, drums, flutes, found objects as well as their own centered bodies and flying limbs, they produce something of their own with a haphazard attitude. Intricate sonic mosaics and vivid tapestries of complex sound masses are created along the edges of experimental jazz and neo-neo-dada-dada.

Lukraak has previously performed at Porta-Jazz Festival and Valkhof Festival, as well as at venues in the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, France, Poland and the Baltics. They are individually and collectively active members of the vibrant experimental music scene of Amsterdam, and together with Jaap Blonk they perform as Luk&BlonkRaak. On 26th of September 2025 their debut album ‘Zaalig’ was released on LukRecords.

Marcus Wärnheim – alto saxophone, recorders and other stuff
Thomas Jaspers – drums, cymbals, recorders and other stuff
