A Straight Story

The Straight Story is often described as David Lynch’s most normal film, but that can be misleading. It may lack the surreal imagery and narrative puzzles that define much of his work, yet it is unmistakably a Lynch film in its attention to silence, landscape and the quiet mysteries of ordinary life.
Based on the true story of Alvin Straight, an elderly man who drives his lawn mower across several states to reconcile with his estranged brother, the film unfolds at the pace of its protagonist. Lynch never rushes the journey or inflates its emotions. Instead, he finds drama in small encounters; with strangers, memories and the passing American landscape. These moments gradually accumulate into something unexpectedly profound.
Rather than feeling like an exception within Lynch’s body of work, The Straight Story reveals another side of the same filmmaker: one equally fascinated by human vulnerability, only this time without the shadows. It is one of the warmest and most compassionate films he ever made, and a reminder that profound cinema doesn’t always need to raise its voice.

An alternately loving and feuding couple, together for an unknown period of time, are on vacation on Sardinia: he, Chris, a struggling, perhaps visionary architect (Lars Eidinger); she, Gitti, a music publicist (Birgit Minichmayr, winner of a Silver Bear at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival).
As long as they exist in an hermetic sphere of their own creation, they are comfortable in their bodies, but persist in subtle role-playing that can only harm their relationship. Theirs is a uniquely defined interaction where Chris is the more “feminine” partner—performing a decidedly unmacho dance to Willie Nelson and Julio Iglesias’ ‘80s classic “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before” under Gitti’s gaze and the feminine gaze of the camera.

In Papiamentu, Changá is the term used when a player wins at both ends of the domino chain, scoring double points. For the opponent, however, it means being blocked from the game entirely. The film uses this metaphor to ask: How do you move within the realm of what is possible? What initiatives do you take, and where do they lead you?
Through intimate conversations with musicians, poets, and creators, the film asks: how do you build a home far from home, and what does it take to play your hand with grace? Through their stories, the film reveals how these creatives apply the philosophy of domino to their daily lives, by responding to the hand they are dealt, finding opportunities in obstacles, and redefining what it means to call the Netherlands home. Prof. dr. Francio Guadeloupe is a social anthropologist and public intellectual examining colonial legacies, cultural diversity, and national identity across the Dutch Kingdom. He holds a dual role as Professor of Public Anthropology of Kingdom Relations at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Senior Research Fellow at the KITLV. A former President of the University of St. Martin, his fieldwork spans the Dutch Caribbean, the Netherlands, and Brazil. He argues that the Caribbean and European parts of the Kingdom are deeply interwoven in daily life, not separate worlds. His key books include Chanting Down the New Jerusalem (2009) and Black Man in the Netherlands (2022).
AMY MIYÚ is an entertainer with Curaçaoan roots whose music, energy, and creative presence are deeply rooted in her Caribbean identity. After first gaining attention with a locally celebrated debut track, she went on to build a solo career that led to collaborations with artists and producers including Yung Felix, Rochelle, Lady Bee, and Laidback Luke. Blending moombahton, dancehall, house, and rap, Amy moves effortlessly between Papiamentu, Dutch, and English, creating genre-fluid music driven by rhythm, attitude, and movement. Known for her vibrant personality both on stage and online, she continues to expand her artistic world through music, live performance, and now film, bringing the sound and spirit of the islands to new audiences.
Juny Martina is an hip-hop artist from Curaçao who uses his music as a protest against social injustice. His latest album ‘Negropont’ explores the complex identity of the ‘Yu Di Kòrsou’ and the future of the island, painting a dystopian picture of the relationship between Curaçao and the Netherlands. Blending local genres such as Seú, Tambú and Müzik di Zumbi with hip-hop, Juny creates a post-genre sound that pairs sharp statements on colonialism and capitalism with a hopeful and lively energy. Eva Croes is an Aruban performing artist, choreographer, actor, and dance educator based in the Netherlands. In 2022, she was awarded Teacher of the Year by the Municipality of Amsterdam in recognition of her contribution to arts education. Her career has taken her to stages in Jordan, Germany, Scotland, the United States, and Cuba, where she performed at the Biennale de La Habana. Alongside her work in dance, Eva is professionally training as an actor, expanding her artistic practice through film and screen performance. She is passionate about telling stories that foster empathy, spark dialogue, and connect people across cultures.
Faisal (Failo) Lobato is a freestyle artist and musician born and raised in Aruba in a Surinamese household. Influenced by Caribbean rhythms and his cultural background, Failo blends these elements with modern hip hop and R&B to create his own distinct sound. Constantly surrounding himself with music and artistry, Failo continues to shape and evolve his creative identity.

New Moon

Well, we’ve hit the new moon/solar eclipse that’s been causing people to fuss so much. My opinion? Find time to take a nap. Seriously, the best thing you can do during an eclipse is to enjoy it if you are where you can see it, or otherwise take a nap.
Yesterday morning, shortly after breakfast/morning chores, I headed out to Red Shirt Farm in Lanesboro. It’s about a 40-minute drive, and it was really lovely to be out and about. I got there early (of course), but got a prime parking spot. Why was I there? Because the American Travelling Morrice Dancers (a Morris dancing troupe) was going to perform.
I’d seen a traditional troupe in the UK many years ago, but I’ve never seen a troupe perform in the US, and I was eager to attend.
Since I was early, I got to sit on the porch and just be for a bit, which was lovely. When the farm store opened, I went in for a wander (and some coffee). The blueberries, Hudson plums, and peaches were so gorgeous I bought some, in addition to the coffee.
Chatted with other audience members as they gathered. A lot of people brought their kids (and all the kids were well-behaved, throughout). This troupe was much more easygoing than the UK counterparts, arriving piece-meal and setting up. In the UK, the troupe followed the strict traditions of being masked and anonymous, and coming into the space at full tilt.
This troupe has members from all over, and this is the 49th year it has toured. It tours different places each year, and the Berkshires were lucky enough to be part of the tour this year. One of the members is descended from the man who gave his name to one of the dances way back when!
They performed about 6 dances over a half hour, chatted with the audience and passed the hat. They are doing about 5-6 shows/day during their tour. Later shows yesterday were actually going to be at Windsor Lake and at Freight Yard Brewing here in North Adams. But I was glad I went down to Lanesboro and saw them there.
Stopped to pick up fixings for lunch on the way back, and we had a nice summer lunch (using up some more of the basil cream – we have a lot of basil cream; fortunately, it keeps well). And we had two of those luscious plums for dessert!
I’m really glad I went. It was a lovely experience.
After lunch, it was time to turn my attention back to the ghostwriting. I didn’t get as much done as I wanted, because of the time it took to research certain things, but the work I did was solid.
I managed to haul my posterior out the door on time and go to yoga. I was really glad I did. We had a good session of a little stretching, a lot of resting.
Home, heated up dinner, read and rested in the evening. Day 2 of Legs Up the Wall before bed. It’s supposed to realign sleep by Day 7, so we will see. I slept reasonably well, until Charlotte started fussing at me at 4, which is not something a yoga pose can fix.
Morning routine was fine. I need to send out some emails this morning, and put together some paperwork on various issues. The MA AG’s office sent me an acknowledgement of one of the complaints sent on behalf of my mother, where the company is trying to cheat her out of an account because it is small. They have given me next steps, so there’s that paperwork and some other paperwork on a different issue.
After breakfast, I will take out the garbage and do the household chores, then work on the collage and the play before switching over to the ghostwriting. This evening, I’m going to a friend’s talk up in Pownal, VT.
Bea has a new trick. Sometimes, when I’m scrolling on my phone (which I try not to do too much), she comes down for a cuddle, and I pet her with one hand and scroll with the other. She has started knocking the phone out of my hand and demanding my full attention, which makes sense. Not a problem. However, now, when I pick up the phone, she races over and knock it out of my hand, demanding attention. So, basically, if I want to do anything on my phone, I have to hide from the cat! Which is pretty funny, and a reminder not to spend too much time on the phone.

She has started knocking the phone out of my hand and demanding my full attention, which makes sense. Not a problem. However, now, when I pick up the phone, she races over and knock it out of my hand, demanding attention. So, basically, if I want to do anything on my phone, I have to hide from the cat! Which is pretty funny, and a reminder not to spend too much time on the phone.
