  11. Philippines 2026 Foreign Tourist Arrivals Reach 4.11 Million as of August, U.S. and South Korea Remain Top Markets

With the Peso performing terribly in the global currency market, weakening economic growth, high inflation and fears of an economic recession growing, 2026 has not been good for the Philippines. There is a bright spot in tourism, however, as the Philippines saw its 2026 foreign tourist arrivals reach 4.11 million in the January-August period and the United States and South Korea combined for more than 1.5 million tourist arrivals, according to a news article by the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the news report of BusinessWorld. Some parts in boldface…

The Philippines has recorded 4.11 million foreign arrivals from January to August, higher by 3.7 percent compared to the same period last year, the Department of Tourism (DOT) said on Tuesday.

The United States posted the highest number of share at 818,318, followed by South Korea at 727,379, Japan at 350,191, China at 310,088, and Australia at 234,156.

Also making it in the top 10 source markets are Canada with 231,972, Taiwan with 154,957, the United Kingdom with 132,370, Singapore with 126,812, and India with 77,883.

Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay said the Philippines targets to surpass its 2025 arrival figures to reach between 6.4 million and 6.8 million, or at least 7 million, by the end of 2026.

To achieve this, she said the DOT is intensifying its branding and promotions to reach more tourists in its key source markets.

The DOT is also in active talks with airlines to open up and establish more chartered flights between the Philippines and secondary cities of Korea and China.

DOT Assistant Secretary Ren Sapitan said the agency is also set to sign a contract with a creative agency in November to broaden the country’s marketing efforts and make the Philippines more visible worldwide.

Let me end this post by asking you readers: What is your reaction to this recent development? Do you think the Philippines will be able to exceed the 2025 foreign tourist arrivals number by the end of this year? Do you think the DOT is doing a good job to strengthen the Philippines’ attraction of foreign tourists? Considering the Top 10 markets of foreign tourists the Philippines attracted so far, are you convinced that the nation’s hosting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit did not create any positive tourism results?

[Retooting parts of my earlier toot]

When you read it, you’ll learn about #Japanese #GunLaws and even get a statistic out of it… about #Japan. What you wil not get is how #Australian gun laws work (whatever their merits). Nor will you learn a lot about the facts purportedly supporting statements made by the author of the article (I am assuming the author can back up all his claims here - innocent until proven … well you know the rest).

From my perspective, the more we talk/read/hear about gun laws in Australia the better informed we’ll all be. And that makes all the difference when it comes to deciding what our polies ought to do about it and where our votes should go. But, it must be *informed* discussions, not dubious opinions.

Facts matter here because gun ownership is a most serious issue for society. False comparisons, cherry picking, innuendo(s), appeals to emotions, hidden agendas, and unsubstantiated statements simply won’t do if one intends to inform the reader.

TBH, I am surprised the Australian Insitute allowed this poorly written piece get published, lacking bio info about the author — where does his writing come from, what are the biases we should be made aware of? Etc. Come on *The Point* editor(s), lift your game up, please. I would’ve left a comment had this been enabled. Instead, I’m tooting it. You’re welcome.

  14. #PlasticPatrol: the #CitizenScientists tackling #litter in #Australian #waterways

#Plastics make up the majority of litter across the country. In the absence of regulation, the public are taking matters into their own hands

by James Norman, Fri 30 Jan 2026

"Neil Blake weighs a paper bag of fake grass fragments he has collected from a stormwater gutter near #DarebinCreek in #Melbourne’s north.

"Over the past three years Blake has conducted 56 collections of synthetic turf in the waterway alongside the KP Hardiman Reserve hockey pitch.

" 'I noticed that a local hockey pitch was being replaced and the plastic surface was running off into the local environment,' he says. Strong northerly winds and #LeafBlowers had helped shed the turf fragments into the local #environment.

"In addition to impacts on #AquaticEcosystems, scientific analysis suggests #PlasticPollution is exacerbating #ClimateChange, #biodiversity loss and #OceanAcidification.

"Australians produce more than 3m tonnes of plastic waste each year, and according to Clean Up’s annual survey of parks, beaches, creeks and other public spaces, plastics make up more than 80% of litter across the country. A review by the New South Wales chief scientist found that one #SyntheticTurf field could transport between 10kg and 100kg of plastic fragments into the #stormwater system or local waterways.

"Blake has taken advantage of the electronic scales provided by the newly opened community science laboratory in the Port Phillip #EcoCentre in #StKilda, to quantify his samples to present to the local council and the Environment Protection Authority. The lab hosts facilities including microscopes, measuring equipment, safety gear and access to advice from trained scientists.

"It’s one example of citizen scientists tackling the growing problem of plastics in #waterways, including #beaches, #rivers and dive sites around the country."

  19. Syrian Australian Muslim Halts #Indian #Australian #ISIL Attack on #Jewish Australians

The disdain for mindless violence exhibited by most of the world’s 2 billion Muslims is exemplified by Ahmed al-Ahmed. He interrupted the negative stereotypes of #Muslims so powerfully that white nationalists spread false allegations that he was actually a British IT specialist with a Christian name. Others attempted to maintain that he was a Christian Lebanese, which his name makes impossible. The #NewYorkTimes declined to mention his #religion. That there should have been a Muslim Schindler, a hero who followed the toleration promoted by the #ProphetMuhammad, was so insupportable to Islamophobes that they felt constrained to make up fantasies and obscure reality.

  20. My high school #Art #Ceramics teacher was Clare Binney; famous as one of the actresses in the notorious #Australian #Film Don's Party.

The thing "Miss Binney" drilled into us was how astoundingly dangerous ceramics materials were, even just the dust from dry clay (wet cleanup mandated), the consequences of #Silicosis, and the need to wear respirators.

That was the most important thing I learned in high school. I give thanks to her every time I put on my PPE in studio.

Pics 1 - 3 are of one that stands approx 70 feet (20+ metres) tall by estimations.

The trunk is gorgeous with its smooth, yet slightly mottled and indented surface.

The base looks gnarled and weathered, albeit a typical visual feature of gums.

Remind me again how it is even legal that critical infrastructure - like a national #broadband network - is allowed to have a complete failure every other night and / or every time there’s a tiny bit of bad weather? Could you imagine the repercussions for their garbage network, if #NBNCo had to answer to shareholders, instead of the #Australian tax-payer? | #Australia
