  1. [edited for typos - there’s always some]

Look, I’m an avid reader of #AmyRemeikis columns and I share most of her political views. Her reporting, opinion pieces and books are packed full of facts and level-headed analysis. But in this article, I have to strongly disagree with her (in part). Her view that #Australian #Sovereignty is imperiled by the #AUKUS Agreement(s) — towit: Tiers One and Two — is quite factually over the top (and I’m refraining from using the term hysterical out of respect). History simply does not bear her opinion out. Not in the case of the #UK since 1962. Not #Japan since the 50s. And not #NATO countries since the start of the Cold War. Nor anywhere else where the #US has shared its military technology in exchange for long term basing facilities (of whatever form and size). The #Philippines even kicked them out, though they’ve let the US back in since (I guess they saw the light and #China helped them with that).

As for suggesting that the #RAN might be unable to control #Australian owned #Virigina boats due to, I presume, the fake-news that some ‘US cut-off switch’ exists, is absolute bullocks. Virginia boats have dual US-UK nationality (in terms of its engineering and component parts), if there was such a switch we would know about it from the UK. To boot, the personal relationship which forged and currently maintain #UKUSA are too strategically important to all participants for any such ‘switch’, though cooling-off periods and niggly spats have occurred since 1942 - all resolved with the strength of many high-level relationships and 5-Eyes strategic imperatives.

No, #Marles didn’t say as much (see article). The MInister is reveling in playing the press — and the Australian public — because he *knows* and we don’t. That’s his job in this #secrecy obsessed #Labor govt. Make what you will of his words, just don’t extrapolate by pretending you know what he means by them.

  2. Was Rabbi Eli Schlanger one the apocalyptic oddballs trying to build the Third Temple?

Rabbi Elboim eulogized Rabbi Schlanger: "The heart mourns the murder of the martyrs in the terrible terror attack. I had the privilege to host the martyr Rabbi Eliyahu Schlanger on the roof of the #Machkameh synagogue with a delegation of #Australian #Chabad rabbis… "The rabbi studied the issue of ascending the #TempleMount and the law of building the Temple in our days in depth, and his face beamed when he saw the place of the Temple. We all pray that these will be the final sacrifices and we will be comforted by the construction of the Temple."

  3. #PlasticPatrol: the #CitizenScientists tackling #litter in #Australian #waterways

#Plastics make up the majority of litter across the country. In the absence of regulation, the public are taking matters into their own hands

by James Norman, Fri 30 Jan 2026

"Neil Blake weighs a paper bag of fake grass fragments he has collected from a stormwater gutter near #DarebinCreek in #Melbourne’s north.

"Over the past three years Blake has conducted 56 collections of synthetic turf in the waterway alongside the KP Hardiman Reserve hockey pitch.

" 'I noticed that a local hockey pitch was being replaced and the plastic surface was running off into the local environment,' he says. Strong northerly winds and #LeafBlowers had helped shed the turf fragments into the local #environment.

"In addition to impacts on #AquaticEcosystems, scientific analysis suggests #PlasticPollution is exacerbating #ClimateChange, #biodiversity loss and #OceanAcidification.

"Australians produce more than 3m tonnes of plastic waste each year, and according to Clean Up’s annual survey of parks, beaches, creeks and other public spaces, plastics make up more than 80% of litter across the country. A review by the New South Wales chief scientist found that one #SyntheticTurf field could transport between 10kg and 100kg of plastic fragments into the #stormwater system or local waterways.

"Blake has taken advantage of the electronic scales provided by the newly opened community science laboratory in the Port Phillip #EcoCentre in #StKilda, to quantify his samples to present to the local council and the Environment Protection Authority. The lab hosts facilities including microscopes, measuring equipment, safety gear and access to advice from trained scientists.

"It’s one example of citizen scientists tackling the growing problem of plastics in #waterways, including #beaches, #rivers and dive sites around the country."

  4. #Australian #Supercars legend Allan Moffat passed away today aged 83. Moffat won four Australian Touring Car Championships, four #Bathurst victories, six Sandown wins, & more than three decades of extraordinary #Motorsport achievement.

#Moffat, famously a #Ford man, had a longstanding rivalry & friendship with legendary #Holden (General Motors) driver, Peter #Brock.

    Article on Moffat: speedcafe.com/supercars-news-a

Here is a piece I wrote on the 2018 XC Falcon Cobra 40 Years PMC: coinofnote.com/2018-xc-falcon-. I didn't mention Moffat in the piece, he drove several XC falcons. He won Bathurst 1977 in an XC Falcon (pictured). In 1978, he drove the Cobra variant (like in the PMC), securing Pole position with a record time of 2:21.59 and a speed down Conrod strait of 159 mph, although ultimate forced to retire that race with a broken engine.

  5. An #Australian Darrell Lea (Quadrant Private Equity) bag of Liquorice Allsorts versus a #British Maynards Bassetts (Mondelez International) bag of Liquorice Allsorts (a few of these had already been eaten lol, didn't survive a car trip home.)

The British version certainly has more sorts of allsorts.

But IMO the more limited sorts of the Darrell Lea version are higher quality in and of themselves. They're brighter, perkier, buff, well honed sorts.

Like a lot of British things, the Maynards Bassetts ones look like they've been sat on by Jabba the Hutt. They're kinda flaccid, warped, dull sorts. There is probably a relevant British standard for this special feature of British food, BSI-5318008 or something.

There's probably some whole sorta allsort metaphor to be had here. But I'm too busy having allsorts.

  6. Another reason why there never will be a #NuclearPower industry in Australia ... the bacteria that is #LOTO is would like the #Australian public to fund the construction - such a wonderful investment if you get your kicks by watching money burn!

There’s a cautionary tale out of the UK this morning for those who advocate building #nuclear power stations in Australia.

#EDF, the French energy company and nuclear specialist, is reportedly in talks with investors to raise up to £4bn – that’s almost $8bn AUD – just to finish the delayed #HinkleyPointC project in Somerset, Britain’s first new nuclear reactors in a generation.

The cost of the project has ballooned to almost £50bn – nearly $100bn AUD – due in part to supply chain issues and struggles securing skilled engineers, according to Bloomberg. And now EDF wants investors to cough up more.

  8. Have you ever caught a glimpse of an Australian painted-snipe (Rostratula australis)? This elusive - and endangered - is a must-see on every serious birdwatcher’s list!

According to BirdLife Australia, the painted-snipe is one of Australia’s 10 most difficult-to-find bird species, making it not only difficult for birdwatchers to see, but a challenge for researchers to study.
