  1. SO HAPPY tonight!

LG has discontinued the DualUp LCD display ( 28MQ780-B ), it seems, sometime in the last 12 months or so. It is a 28-inch "4K"-class monitor that is nearly square, 2560x2880 in resolution with a 16:18 ( = 8:9 = 4:4.5 ) aspect ratio.

I have this display and it is the best display I have ever used in my life. I use it rotated 90 degree on the Mac, running in a "HiDPI" mode that is effectively 2304x2048, scaled. It looks amazing and is perfect for my needs.

I have used this as the main display on my Mac Studio since 2022. I always intended to buy a spare for when this one dies, but I missed the chance, so I setup an elaborate real-time monitoring system on eBay that has been alerting me the instant one appears on the site. They often go for twice retail or more.

This weekend one appeared that was local, and I talked to the seller and he told me it had only 490 hours on-time (which I've since verified), is flawless, and would meet me for pickup. He actually dropped the price and we did the sale outside of eBay. I paid about $200 over retail.

But, now I have a backup! My square, UNIX-perfect system can live on well beyond what it might otherwise have.

Bizarre source of excitement - but I'm so happy right now.

  6. I have just added a Uperfect Portable 18-inch monitor ( aka Ugame K118 / M180J03 ) to my Mac Studio as a second display. It's 2560x1600 and is powered by one USB-C port and receives input via another USB-C input ( Thunderbolt 3/4, USB 3.1 ) or mini HDMI. It's one of those super light, portable units with an iPad-like magnetic case-wrap that's meant to tote along with your laptop to serve as a second screen on the go.

I connect it, it appears, it works. But...

When the system sleeps the displays and then wakes (the Studio itself never sleeps), this second display does not reappear. I can power cycle it and it will not appear to the Mac. On a hard power cycle, the screen comes alive and reports NO SIGNAL on the display screen, while connected to the Mac Studio as it has always been. Only when I disconnect the USB-C data cable and reconnect does it reappear to the Mac.

Obviously I can't run like this. I don't see any setting on the display's onboard menu that talks about settings around this. There is a ECO setting, but it's not to do with sleep; it has options like: standard, game, text, movie, etc.

Anyone have any ideas regarding how to get around this? Thanks.

  11. I've ordered this 18-inch 2560x1600 display to replace the dying secondary display on my Mac Studio.

    techpowerup.com/review/uperfec

    The UPERFECT 18" QLED Portable Monitor, 2K 2560×1600, 144Hz Gaming Display, 500 Nits Brightness, FreeSync HDR, 100% DCI-P3, Ultra-Slim USB-C/HDMI Monitor

    $237 @ Amazon

My beloved 4:3 aspect, 1600x1200, 20-inch HP LP2065 is near death (second one I've had, after the first died). I use this rotated for 1200x1600 and will use the new unit rotated, as well, on the same VESA arm.

It will be my new IRC screen, basically. Hope it works out well.

  16. Mmm… it seems that the newest #kernel on #Fedora, which is the first available in the 6.17 series, has broken the support for #USB3. It recognizes #USB 3 ports only as USB 2 and so doesn’t have all the functionality. For me, this means that my nice set up for multiple #displays no longer works correctly. Therefore, I have reverted to a 6.16 kernel until the problem’s fixed. Ho hum…
