  5. Mammoth operation under way to remove 31-tonne whale carcass from Perth beach — video
    By Guardian Staff

A 13-metre whale that washed up on Perth’s City beach early Monday is prepared for removal after its carcass attracted huge great white sharks to the shoreline. Some of the sharks were estimated to measure up to six metres long. Contractors spent Wednesday preparing the whale for transport with earthmovers, tarpaulins and ropes. The public was asked to keep off the beach during the operation, with the carcass due to be taken to a landfill site for burial

  21. #TasmanianDevils lived alongside humans in #Pilbara for millennia, #JuukanGorge fossils reveal

Researchers find fossils ranging from 7,000 years to 46,000 years old showing evidence that devils may have become reliant on humans for scavenging

"Tasmanian devils lived alongside humans in #WesternAustralia ’s Pilbara region for tens of thousands of years, according to fossils uncovered at Juukan Gorge.

"These squat and sable marsupials, now restricted to Tasmania, were once abundant right across #Australia, becoming extinct on the mainland about 3,200 years ago.

"Excavations of the ancient rock shelter, destroyed by #RioTinto in 2020, have uncovered jaw and teeth fragments confirming the presence of devils in northwestern Australia – previously a gap in the fossil record.

"Dr Tim Churchill, a palaeontologist at UNSW and lead author of the research, said the devil fossils, dated to 7,000 and 46,000 years old, were found alongside evidence of their scavenging throughout the time period, including 'bite marks on bones' and 'acid digestion of bone fragments'.

"Devils were there the entire time, he said, persisting through huge variations in climate, from warm and wet periods, to the last glacial maximum, or ice age, when Australia was cooler and drier. 'The Tasmanian devil seems to be pretty unbothered with the changes and adapted.' "

  26. Another look at Perth's temperature, prompted by some online discussion that "I remember real scorchers as a kid, we just don't get that anymore" (I need to stop scrolling reddit).

First, we can look at the distribution of Perth's daily max. temp - when we look at this decadally, we can see that the 2010s and 2020s have had a notable shift - with the density curve shifting to the right and becoming broader. This means we're seeing more days with higher maximum temperature.

Another way is to look at extremes, taking the 99th percentile of max daily temp (which is conveniently 40.3 degrees, a convenient benchmark for a 'Very Hot Day" which will be familiar to Perth folk. We can see a consistent rise in temperature, with Perth Airport experiencing >twice as many days where max temp >40.3 degrees in the 2020s than in the 1950s.

Just shows that our memory for things like weather is actually pretty poor! Anecdotes only get you so far :)
