"The #HousingShortage in the United States not only drives up rents, it is also a significant driver of poverty, according to a new study released by the Pew Charitable Trust on Tuesday.
"The study examined parts of the country where lowering home prices would lift a significant number of people out of poverty — similar in effect to a major anti-poverty program — at a moment when the national conversation around housing has gained urgency at every level of government.
"The analysis found that in nine states and Washington, D.C., poverty rates are 16 to 34 percent higher than they would be if housing costs were the same as the national average. Most of those states are on the East Coast — #NewJersey, #Massachusetts, #Maryland, #Connecticut, #NewYork and #NewHampshire. #Hawaii, #California and #Colorado also made the list. The analysis was based on research by Zachary Parolin, a professor at the University of Oxford, who examined census data to determine the states where housing costs contributed to the greatest share of poverty.
"In New Hampshire, the poverty rate, as defined by the federal poverty line, is 16 percent higher than it would be with average housing costs. In Hawaii, the poverty rate is 34 percent higher. In most states included in the study, the rate of child poverty was even more elevated."

"The money will be distributed among 12 organizations that provide short-term shelters, adding another 474 beds for #unhoused people in Maine.
"According to the housing authority, the award stands as the largest in five years and will bolster efforts to combat the housing crisis in eight of nine Maine 'homeless service hubs,' centers meant to cover all 16 counties.
"Warming shelters offer a place to stay overnight in cold temperatures, which can prove dangerous for those without protection from the elements. Most are open through the end of April.
"MaineHousing says the money may also be used for staffing, supplies, transportation, and other standard operating expenses.
" 'Dangerous winter weather can put lives at risk, especially for people experiencing #homelessness or housing instability,' MaineHousing Director Dan Brennan said in a press release. 'These grants help communities open safe, heated spaces before severe cold arrives.'
"The grant is part of a wider goal to keep vulnerable Mainers warm, MaineHousing said. Other programs they offer include the Home Energy Assistance Program and the Energy Crisis Intervention Program, meant to reduce heating costs for those who need it.

"A group of at least seven people experiencing homelessness faces a one-week deadline to move their belongings from a wooded area off of Ranck Mill Road along the Conestoga River in Lancaster Township.
"The directive comes from Lancaster city, which owns the property and posted signs at the camp site Monday warning people they must leave the area by Friday, or their belongings would be discarded. City officials on Wednesday said the deadline was moved to next Wednesday, Sept. 16.
"Organizers with two community groups — #LancasterStandsUp and Hand Up Partners — gathered near the encampment Wednesday afternoon to urge all of Lancaster County’s elected officials to find a better solution for homeless people instead of clearing camp sites.
"Dave Costarella, leader of Hand Up Partners, said local shelters are limited in capacity and can’t take in everyone who’s being forced to leave the site. He has advocated for legal, transitional camping spaces where people can stay when there are no shelter beds available or people do not feel safe living in a shelter.
" 'I’m not here to fight anybody,' Costarella said. 'We are here to invite every elected official that is being touched by homeless encampments, people living on the streets, that have absolutely no legal place to be… to come together… and find a space they are legally allowed to be. On top of an already very stressful situation, the "quiet enjoyment" right (Residential Tenancies Act 2004) was not respected, garda had to be called, they were great btw.
