We all share a 15-acre Georgian mansion for the price of a two-bed house

"Dreams of living in a Georgian manor house with 15 acres of grounds would usually be associated with a big lottery win.

"But for the residents of Dol-llys Hall on the outskirts of Llanidloes, Powys, no windfall was necessary.

"The Grade II listed building is home to a collection of ordinary people who have chosen to live cooperatively - sharing responsibility for maintaining the home and its grounds and trying to live as sustainably as possible.

" 'You have got a ready-made village mentality where people just help each other out,' says Louise Robinson, one of the longest serving of 10 residents at the hall.

" 'There's six other flats going 'what can we do?' And that means a lot."
Louise Nicholson is a middle-aged white woman with shoulder length dark grey hair. She wears grey framed photo-reactive glasses, a light blue v-neck t-shirt with a lily pad white emblem on the front. She is smiling at the camera. Behind her is the main entrance to Dol-llys Hall. There are two dark wooden doors with arched fanlights above which open from the middle of a curved porch-type entrance. "The hall, which has served as a school and a care home as well as a former stately home over the years, now holds seven flats within its walls and a number of #communal living areas and #SharedFacilities like washing machines and heating.

"Louise first came across Dol-llys after she was made redundant from her insurance job in London. She found herself spending more and more time away from the city, enjoying walking in the rural countryside, and realised she wanted to live there permanently.

" 'I'm a single person, so moving to a country village on your own is not that easy,' she says.

" 'Somebody mentioned [intentional] communities and said 'have you heard about them?''

"After investigating quite a few, she knew she did not want to live somewhere where she only had a bedroom and everything else was shared. And at Dol-llys, where she moved in early 2020, she found the perfect combination of community and privacy.

" 'We term ourselves as #cohousing, because we all have our separate flats,' she says, and that the set-up is not a commune.

" 'We share the grounds, we share the common rooms, we share responsibilities and decision-making, but we all have our front doors, which I think is important to everybody who chooses to live here.' "

"The #WabanakiTwoSpiritAlliance has received government funding to build and manage the first two-spirit transitional housing project in Halifax.

"'It is the first housing to be built for two-spirit people, but I can tell you, it won't be the last,' said Tuma Young, two-spirit Mi'kmaw lawyer from #Membertou and co-founder of the Wabanaki Two Spirit Alliance.

"Two-spirit, a term coined back in the late 1980s, is used to describe #LGBTQ+ plus members who are #Indigenous.

"'The priority is for Two-spirit people. I'm not at liberty to say how much funding we received because the details are still being worked out. We are building a transitional home that's between six and eight units,' said Young.

"The new housing development is part of Canada's National Housing Strategy. Young said that ensuring housing is a major issue due to policy issues, jurisdictional issues, and funding issues.

"The new project will take about six months to a year to develop and operate, and Young said that the alliance is still looking for land to build its units on.

"'As the organization's other co-founder mentioned, the irony doesn't escape me that we're asking for land.'

"Young hopes they will be able to build their first transitional project for Two-spirit people in Halifax, but if no land is available, the project would be in nearby areas such as Dartmouth, Sackville, Hammonds Plains or Eastern Passage.

"'Housing is such a major issue, we're also looking at some #SeniorHousing for LGBTQ+ folks. I'm also looking towards the future of housing and how we can get housing in reserves where I know a lot of two-spirited people without access because they were never even placed on the housing allocation list,' said Young.

"Young said that housing options often go to families, while two-spirit people are often single or don't have children, and that the real culprit is not the allocation of resources but the fact that more resources are required to provide housing for all in need.

"'For example, per community, they may get about 10 houses per year, but the need is actually 400. So with those 10 houses, people have to pick a priority of who will get them. And for a lot of two-spirit people, they will never be able to be on their priority list because there'll always be somebody who will need a house more,' said Young.

"Better ways to delegate resources among the #FirstNations communities would be to collaborate with all three levels of government, to identify housing as a priority and find ways to allocate limited resources, according to Young.

"'When housing is done properly, fairly, equally, and #equitably, then everybody gets a chance at housing,' said Young."

#BCNDP's #HousingHub program is coming under #scrutiny after one #TaxpayerSubsidized #RentalBuilding in #Vancouver's #Kitsilano neighbourhood, touted as "affordable", is now listing units for $2,600 per month for a studio & $4,200 per month for a 2 bedroom unit.

The listed #RentalPrices are well above provincial #AffordableHousing thresholds & one #housing #researcher says it's an example of how difficult it is to build #AffordableRental buildings when market prices are so far beyond what average #renters can afford.

The leader of the #BCGreenParty called it an "infuriating" #misuse of #TaxpayerDollars.

The #BCNDPgovernment provided a $31.8 million #LowInterestLoan to Vancouver developer #JamesonDevelopmentCorp. for the 68-unit rental building through the HousingHub program, which is aimed at providing housing to middle-income renters shut out of the real estate market.

#BCPremier #DavidEby, who was the minister -responsible for housing at the time, was quoted in a December 2021 government news release announcing the project.

"Our government is investing in more affordable housing for people who work and live in Vancouver, and throughout B.C." he said.

The building at 1807 Larch St., called the L2, is set to be complete next month & is now advertising units.

According to the building's website, a 400-square foot studio apartment starts at $2,599 a month & a 840-square foot two-bedroom, two-bath unit is listed for $4,299 a month.
