  6. As long as we have a military, we are grateful to those individuals of good character who choose to serve. Each United States service member has sworn an oath of allegiance to the U.S. Constitution.

Especially considering the current Commander in Chief and Secretary of Defense, we are grateful that all our immediate family members’ commitments of service have been completed.

The final military assignment of our most beloved living veteran—our son, who served in the U.S. Navy—was as part of the NATO Coalition providing the first Ukrainian defense. He followed a line of family members who also served honorably, including our beloved dad, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in the Pacific during World War II.

A bugler played Retreat in the distance as we cut this eve’s salad. And we were reminded again that the freedoms we enjoy are not a given everywhere.

  7. (1) ran 4 miles this morning. Probably should have taken it a bit easier. Usually do the pool after running on Tuesdays, but closed on Veterans Day. 😠

    (2) carpet cleaned the basement in anticipation of entertaining during Thanksgiving. Wow - the carpet really needed it.

    (3) took a nap. It is Veterans Day after all. ;-)

  12. Marisol's great grandfather also fought in World War 1, in the American Expeditionary Force. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for bravery and despite his wounds he refused to be evacuated until all wounded enlisted men had been evacuated first.

    Let we forget.

Three years to the day, I covered the first Veterans Day Proclamation, issued by then-President Dwight Eisenhower 71 years to the day. The proclamations continue. On November 10, 2025, President Donald Trump proclaimed today, November 11, 2025, Veterans Day (see Proclamation). From the Proclamation:

The story of America is written with the courage, honor, and dedicated service of our veterans. Through their sacrifice, the fires of freedom burn brightly, our Republic secured, and our way of life made possible. For nearly 250 years, their unyielding spirit has carried our Nation through every trial and triumph, ensuring that liberty endures for all time. This Veterans Day, we show our gratitude and recommit to honor their service, uphold their legacy, and give every veteran the loyalty, respect, and support they have earned and so dearly deserve.

Finally, the portion designating November 11, 2025, as Veterans Day (which as I noted in 1954, is an annual tradition going back to President Eisenhower):

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim November 11, 2025, as Veterans Day. I encourage all Americans to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of our veterans through public ceremonies and private thoughts and prayers of gratitude. I call upon Federal, State, and local officials to display the flag of the United States and to participate in patriotic activities in their communities.

I wish all of America’s Veterans a restful Veterans Day. We should of course also use the occasion to remember those who fought in the First World War, which is the reason our Veterans Day falls in November.

  16. Roughly one in every thirteen US veterans depends on SNAP to help feed their families. In California, that number is nearly 1 in 10.

The food stamp pilot program was created by a veteran (JFK). The program was made permanent by a veteran (LBJ). The largest expansion of the program was headed by a veteran (Richard Nixon).

  20. #Homeschool means I can declare that we get #VeteransDay off tomorrow and I'll make it up some time later.

Or maybe we are just watching war movies tomorrow, having some hard conversations, and calling it school.

I've barely started unpacking my military service, only a year retired after 21 in, and still very conflicted.

But it was a thing I did and tried to do well and for the right reasons and this is still my favorite holiday.
