  1. Some Tech Companies Have Privately Pushed Back on #ICE #Subpoenas. They Should All Do More.

In a handful of known cases, large social media companies have privately pushed back against Immigration and #Customs Enforcement (ICE) subpoenas when the agency tried to unmask #anonymous users who tracked #immigration activities or criticized the government.

As ICE engages in a pattern of illegal and chilling investigations, any resistance is welcome. But #socialmedia companies can do more.

    […]

ICE has sent hundreds of subpoenas to large technology companies like #Google , #Meta , and #Reddit.

Publicly challenging these unlawful subpoenas in court has the dual purpose of protecting individual users who may lack the resources or know-how to challenge a #subpoena on their own, while also discouraging ICE from issuing similarly unlawful subpoenas in the future.

  3. #ICE to Pay #LexisNexis Millions for Data to Feed to #Palantir

#Immigration and #Customs Enforcement (#ICE ) plans to pay LexisNexis millions more dollars for continued access to data it can feed into a Palantir platform, according to newly published procurement records. The data is to help, among other sections, ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (#ERO ), the part of ICE focused on #deportation.

The documents provide some more insight into the sort of information ICE intends to use Palantir to process. In January, 404 Media revealed the existence of #ELITE , a system Palantir made for ICE that helps the agency find which neighborhoods to target by bringing together data from private suppliers and government agencies.

I wonder if a border guard who opens a camera to inspect the images on it will then seek to arrest the owner for having destroyed the images on the film inside?
The ones who got cross when they commanded a digital device to zero itself might not see why not.

  5. #Activist charged with #felony after giving #border agent "duress code" that wiped his phone

In early 2025, Atlanta resident Samuel Tunick was on his way home following a trip abroad. After landing in the US, #customs agents demanded access to his Pixel phone, which was running an alternative version of #Android called #GrapheneOS. Rather than hand over his data, Tunick used a clever feature of the software to delete everything. Now, he's facing federal charges.

  6. My brother took ages to clear #customs

In retrospect it was probably a mistake to send him a txt asking if they'd found the drugs yet?

    --
Just to be clear, this is fiction based on a real event. What really happened was a food detector dog responded strongly to his trousers and he couldn’t explain why. He eventually remembered he’d accidentally spilled some bolognese on them before leaving Australia and wiped it off.

Some years earlier I flew to Australia on a budget airline that didn’t supply in flight meals so I took a roast beef sandwich to eat on flight. At Brisbane Airport the dog reacted to my backpack & the quarantine officer asked if I knew why. I said I’d had a beef sandwich in it earlier in the day & he asked if I still had it. I patted my belly and said “concealed internally”. We both laughed & he waved me on.

  8. #Leaked Document Shows the #Surveillance Tech at ICE’s Fingertips

A leaked document shows the spread of surveillance and investigative capabilities that Immigration and #Customs Enforcement (#ICE ) officials have access to agency wide, from location data harvested from #smartphones , to facial recognition apps that can reveal someone’s #identity , to tools that let the agency stay #anonymous online and approach people #undercover. The document covers everything from monitoring social media to tracking the movements of vehicles.

It is rare for the public to see such a large list of ICE’s technology capabilities in a single document. 404 Media has published the whole document, called “ICE Wide Analytical Tools,” below.

  10. #Inequalities in #taxation played a key role in fuelling the #French #Revolution, says a study published by #RFBerlin. #Economists have now put numbers to it. In areas where the #salt taxes and #customs duties were high, there were twice as many revolts as in low-tax districts between 1750 and 1789.

  11. Fake condoms, counterfeit weight-loss pens and the toy labels testing EU borders.

Anti-fraud investigators at OLAF just broke up an international smuggling group.

Criminals tried to slip their illegal cargo past European border checks as children’s toys to evade customs controls.

But the boxes did not contain toys at all.

  12. I couldn't care less whether any religion classifies a dog as pure or impure, because in Germany, dogs are a normal part of the everyday cityscape and are simply part of it.

Anyone who comes from a different culture has to accept that!

Don’t spout off to me about your religion or anything about “haram”—instead, as a guest or immigrant in my country, behave in accordance with local customs and traditions.

If you don’t like it, then go to another country.

  13. #TheGuardian: "#EU introduces €3 #customs charge on small parcels to curb cheap Chinese #imports"

"Parcels of goods worth under €150 will no longer enjoy ‘#deminimis’ exemption"
There were "5.9bn in 2025. About 90% of the parcels are coming from China"

Their motivation is to help high-street retailers compete, but it wouldn't be bad if we bought fewer gizmos in general, would it?
