Dass viele US-Amerikaner Donald Trump für einen jesusgleichen Erlöser halten, ist mittlerweile allgemein bekannt. Dass Leute wie JD Vance und Peter Thiel eine katholisch geprägte Oligarchie errichten wollen – geschenkt! Was aber viele Beobachter bislang übersehen haben: Kriegsminister Pete Hegseth hat das US-Militär vom Generalstab abwärts umgebaut und erfahrene Offiziere durch religiöse Fanatiker ersetzt. Es ist also keine Überraschung, dass große Teile des Offizierkorps gegen die Proteste der Mannschaften den Krieg im Iran als Gelegenheit sehen, das „Reich Gottes“ auf die Erde zu bringen.

Auf der anderen Seiten wird der Iran regiert von den Priestern der Zwölfer-Schia, eines besonders radikalen Zweiges des Schiitentums, der auf die Ankunft des verheißenen Erlösers, des Imam Mahdi, wartet. Für die schiitischen Priester ist der aktuelle Krieg die einmalige Gelegenheit, zu ihren Lebzeiten die apokalyptische Endzeit auszulösen und durch die Herrschaft des Madhi das „Reich Gottes“ herbeizurufen – also durchaus symmetrisch zu den Amerikanern.

Oliver führt uns durch die Glaubenssätze und Prophezeiungen sowohl der christlichen US-Militärs als auch der schiitischen Priester. Alles läuft auf eine Orgie der Gewalt und Zerstörung hinaus, die von den wahnhaft Religiösen auf beiden Seiten provoziert wird. Martina und Till sind entsetzt: Wenn massenhaft Leid und Tod das eigentliche Ziel der Gottesmenschen sind, wie soll dann jemals ein belastbarer Frieden entstehen?

So, I think it wasn't an essay, but two movies I saw in class -- "The Bro Code" and "The Strength to Resist". I'll see if I can find a link to those. In the meantime, here is my student response to the movies that I wrote back in 2017.

"The movie, “The Strength to Resist,” Dr. Gail Dines talks media’s impact on boys and men, and how “men are affected by society’s encoded messages of what it means to be a man” (Strength). However, in the movie, “The Bro Code,” Dr. Thomas Keith describes “Maxim model of manhood” (Bro Code). If a man doesn’t “measure up to Alpha Male, he will put you in your place,” (Bro Code). If one doesn’t measure up to “a tough guy badass” (Bro Code) hypermasculine model, then you’re were either feminized or a “a McLovin” (Bro Code) nerd-type.

The #hypermasculine model puts pressure on boys and men to hide their feelings or be considered weak or feminized, and to act and look a certain way – with an emphasis of being buff and tough. But it is painfully obvious – especially after watching “The Strength to Resist” and the Ms. magazine article – that there is a lot of pressure on girls and women to look a certain way – with boys and men can be brainwashed into judging women by their looks and thinking of them as just “sex objects” (Bro Code).

Gloria Steinem summed it up nicely when she described how that “even ‘real’ non-model women photographed for a woman’s magazine are usually made up, dressed in credited clothes, and retouched out of all reality” (Steinem, 181). Unrealistic expectations hurt everyone, and only by rejecting these standards can we be ourselves, and not media-constructed hyperboles."
