The United States sought to enlist its NATO allies in a campaign to “systematically dismantle” the International Criminal Court (ICC), further straining already tense transatlantic relations, according to Politico.

During a closed-door meeting of NATO’s 32 ambassadors in Brussels in mid-July, U.S. envoy Matthew Whitaker urged NATO members to help dismantle the court and called on them to withdraw from the Rome Statute, the ICC’s founding treaty, according to three NATO diplomats who spoke anonymously to Politico.

Whitaker concluded his intervention by warning: “We will be watching closely who stands with America.”

The push comes amid a broader Trump-administration offensive against international institutions seen as constraining U.S. action, including after investigations or potential cases involving U.S. officials and allies such as Israel.
