Platner vowed to defeat incumbent Sen. #SusanCollins (R-Maine), but he said the ultimate goal is to “start tearing down the system that, for too long, has forgotten and written off the people who make Maine and this country what it is.”

While powerful national Democrats had backed Mills’ candidacy in the primary, Senate Minority Leader #ChuckSchumer (D-NY) and Senator #KirstenGillibrand (D-NY) endorsed Platner shortly after the #Maine governor suspended her campaign.

Dem Leaders Aren’t Even Bothering to Rally Caucus Against #Trump #DomesticSpying Powers

Grassroots opposition to renewing #Section702 of #FISA is building, thanks in part to fears about #AI used to sort Americans’ data.

    Matt Sledge, April 14 2026

"The House of Representatives is set to vote Wednesday on renewing a spy power that grants the Trump administration warrantless access to thousands of Americans’ communications.
While uniting against President Donald Trump on many fronts, Democrats are split on what to do over the domestic spying power — and the party’s leadership isn’t giving much guidance, according to a congressional notice obtained by The Intercept.

"With leadership silent, progressive activists are trying to step into the void to pressure members. They say Trump’s disregard for the rule of law in his second term means that representatives should only vote for the law with reforms. Government officials have engaged a pattern of abuses at the Justice Department."

  15. Republicans have a mess on their hands over health care subsidies – Axios

Republicans have a mess on their hands over health care subsidies – By Stef W. Kight,Kate Santaliz, and Hans Nichols

Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson are both considering votes on GOP health care priorities next week — if they can figure out what those priorities are.

Why it matters: Democrats are unified in their demand for a three-year extension of Affordable Care Act’s enhanced subsidies, which expire Dec. 31. Republicans are still divided and debating their counter offers.

    • Johnson (R-La.) has said he hopes to reveal a House GOP health care package early next week, though some sources are skeptical that will happen.
    • Thune (R-S.D.) has promised Democrats a vote on their health care bill next week. But his conference is still in the idea stage on their counters, which are more likely to come as amendment or unanimous consent votes rather than a single broader GOP package.

Between the lines: Don’t expect any health care package to pass next week.

    • The real question is whether the voting exercise in the Senate and maybe the House fuels ongoing bipartisan dealmaking — or hampers it.

Zoom in: Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) is circulating a plan that would extend the expiring subsidies — but with a $200,000 income cap and no zero-dollar premium packages, Semafor’s Burgess Everett reports.

    • Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kansas) told Axios he hopes a GOP package will include moving the expiring subsidies into health care savings accounts and adding his bipartisan bill requiring more price transparency.
    • Republicans are also again eyeing changes known as cost-sharing reductions, aimed at lowering premiums, but could cut subsidies for some enrollees.
    • Multiple senators described the conversations as broad and fluid, with no real consensus this week on any one, single GOP package. And Hyde protections continue to be a sore spot, with some Republicans demanding increased assurances that subsidies aren’t used for abortions.

In the House, Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) has been holding “listening sessions” with committee leaders and rank-and-file Republicans for weeks to find a consensus GOP plan.

    • A bipartisan group of 35 centrist lawmakers , led by Reps. Jen Kiggans (R-Va.) and Josh Gottheimer, unveiled a two-year extension of the ACA subsidies Thursday, but it doesn’t have buy in from leadership.
    • “We’re going to come up with something that I think even people like Jen would support,” Scalise said Thursday.
    • House GOP leaders have also discussed proposals that would not extend the enhanced subsidies, but instead expand Association Health Plans, where employers band together to purchase health coverage for workers.

  17. $200 mill on a gold ballroom while Vets lose their health care – VoteVets.org

    Paul, Travis here.

You ever see something that instantly gets under your skin?

I’ll admit, it’s happening to me a lot more than usual this year. And yesterday, something happened that really, really set me off.

Trump announced he’s putting in a $200 million gilded ballroom at the White House. Yeah, they’re blowing $200 million on a big room for people to come and bow before Trump.

That’s after Trump already paved over Jackie Kennedy’s Rose Garden. After he extorted Qatar for a $400 million jet, which is gonna cost $1 billion to get up to code, that he’s going to take personal possession of after he leaves office. After he threw himself a birthday parade at the cost of $45 million at minimum. After he’s taken something like 100 trips to his own golf courses on taxpayer dime — way more already than at this point in his first term.

Napkin math, that’s probably pushing $2 billion right there. And we’re not even getting into his crypto schemes and the global “deals” funnelling billions of dollars into his bank account.

You already know what’s happening back in the real world. The VA’s lost thousands of doctors, nurses, researchers, therapists, and caregivers. He’s selling off public lands to the highest bidder. He’s kicking literally hundreds of millions of people off their health care when they’re already struggling to get by. People can’t afford basic necessities because of his tariffs.

Trump can afford to blow $200 million on a golden ballroom at the White House but he can’t afford to help Veterans, the elderly, sick and hungry kids.

This is Marie Antoinette on steroids.

But that’s why I’m proud I get to work at VoteVets. It’s my job to find and build networks of support for thousands of Veterans around the country who decided to take a really tough step into public service. The only way we get to the other side of this is if people like them continue stepping up to put the country before themselves.

It’s not easy. It takes tons of work, and time away from your family and friends. You don’t get days off. It shouldn’t be this tough, but that’s the world we live in right now.

I’m proud of all of them. And I’m just so grateful I get to help them out.

The reality though, is that this work isn’t cheap. And sometimes it requires us making tough asks of the people who support us. Today is one of those days.

So, I’m humbly asking you: Can you make a donation to VoteVets today and help us lay the groundwork for taking back the House and the Senate next year? It’s our only shot at stopping Trump, and we’ve got to start now if we’re gonna have any chance.

Thanks so much for the help.

    Travis

  18. 'If I wasn't here, people could die': Trump public media cuts could hit rural America

    Thomas Copeland, BBC World Service
    July 15, 2025

"A gale-force storm hit north-eastern #Alaska last winter. Residents of #Kotzebue, a town of about 3,000, are used to polar conditions, so Desiree Hagan still had to get to work.

" 'The snow was so intense you could not see in front of you,' Ms Hagan remembers. 'I was walking backwards to work.'

"Ms Hagan is a reporter at a public radio station, #KOTZ, which airs across Kotzebue and its 12 surrounding villages.
She also happens to be the only US journalist stationed inside the Arctic Circle, so as the storm intensified, she had to get on the air.

" 'It's go time, I have to report on this,' recalls Ms Hagan. 'We have to make sure we know where people can go. Oh, the electric is out. Okay, now the airport is flooded.'

" 'Winter is not a joke here, it is life and death,' she tells the BBC. 'As a reporter I try not to make emotional statements like, if I wasn't here, people could die, but that is a reality.'

"On the other side of the country in #WashingtonDC, however, a historic vote could bring federal support for KOTZ to an end.

"The Senate must decide by the end of the week whether to claw back $1.1bn (£800m) from the #CorporationForPublicBroadcasting, the body that distributes federal funding to public radio and television stations.

"While the #PublicMedia cuts are part of a broad spending package, which includes requests to rescind $8.3bn from the United States Agency for International Development and other foreign aid programmes, they are especially dear to President Donald Trump, who frequently accuses media of bias.

"The president has now threatened to pull his support from any Republican senator who does not support the cuts.

" 'It is very important that all Republicans adhere to my Recissions Bill and, in particular, DEFUND THE CORPORATION FOR PUBLIC BROADCASTING (PBS and NPR), which is worse than CNN & MSDNC put together,' Trump posted on Truth Social Thursday night.

"Executives at National Public Radio (#NPR) and the Public Broadcasting System (#PBS) reject accusations of bias and say they abide by all journalistic standards.

"Republican voters, however, are about three times less likely than Democrats to consume or trust news coverage from either outlet, according to the Pew Research Center.

"While the cuts will affect national broadcasters like NPR and PBS, more than 70% of federal funding goes to local media stations and about 45% of the stations that received funding in 2023 are in rural areas.

"For half of those rural stations, federal grants made up a quarter or more of their revenue. At KOTZ in Kotzebue, public funding constitutes 41% of its income.

" 'By no means is it assured of being passed in the Senate, where many of the Republican senators represent rural states that really do benefit from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting,' Democratic congressman Dan Goldman, co-chair of the Public Broadcasting Caucus, told the BBC World Service's Weekend programme.

"Republican Senator #LisaMurkowski of Alaska has said she opposes the cuts to public media stations, warning that "what may seem like a frivolous expense to some has proven to be an invaluable resource that saves lives in Alaska".
'Almost to a number, they're saying that they will go under if public broadcasting funds are no longer available to them,' Murkowski told a Senate hearing last month. "

  19. #Trump’s #BigBill Would Let Him Expand His #LosAngeles #ImmigrationCrackdown ‘Everywhere’

“If it works out well in L.A., expect it everywhere,” a Trump official says of the admin’s plans for #militarized #ICERaids around the country

    By Andrew Perez, Asawin Suebsaeng
    June 12, 2025

"Donald Trump’s '#BigBeautifulBill' wouldn’t just force millions of #poor people off their #HealthInsurance and #FoodAssistance to help pay for more #TaxCuts for the rich.

"The Trump #TaxBill would steer tens of billions of dollars to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for #detention capacity, employee bonuses, and to hire new agents. It would supercharge ICE’s ability to conduct raids, and allow the administration to expand the campaign of terror it’s waging on immigrants in Los Angeles to blue cities around the country.

"ICE’s aggressive worksite raids and courthouse arrests throughout the Los Angeles area have, of course, inspired a wave of protests — giving the president an excuse to send the U.S. military to a Democratic city, something he’s long fantasized about, while inspiring demonstrations across the country.

" 'This bill would give Donald Trump the ability to do what he’s doing [in California] on a scale we really haven’t seen before,' says #DavidBier, the director of immigration studies at the #CatoInstitute, a libertarian think tank. 'He will be able to replicate this militarized approach to Los Angeles across maybe dozens of American cities.'

"For Trump and key officials, including immigration-crackdown policy architect #StephenMiller, this is exactly the point, with Los Angeles currently being used as an autocratic staging area. They want to replicate this militarized, ramped-up blitz of ICE raids, backed by the U.S. armed forces, in several other Democratic strongholds — particularly if larger-scale protests spread to other cities.

"As Rolling Stone previously reported, the president and his senior officials have already mapped out near-term plans for how to further ratchet up the already tense blitz of ICE operations, especially in the coming days in Los Angeles, where the federal agents are now being protected by Trump’s literal troop deployment to the city, against the wishes of Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.

"Sources familiar with the matter tell Rolling Stone that senior Trump administration officials are closely monitoring the situation in L.A. as a test case for what they want to do soon in places such as #Chicago, #philadelphia #BostonMA, or the #WashingtonDC, area."
