In textual studies, a palimpsest (/ˈpælɪmpsɛst/) is a manuscript page, either from a scroll or a book, from which the text has been scraped or washed off in preparation for reuse[1] in the form of another document.[2] Parchment was made of lamb, calf, or goat skin and was expensive and not readily available, so, in the interest of economy, a page was often re-used by scraping off the previous writing. In colloquial usage, the term palimpsest is also used in architecture, archaeology and geomorphology to denote an object made or worked upon for one purpose and later reused for another; for example, a monumental brass on which the blank reverse side has been re-engraved.[3 — Wikipedia

  4. In early 2007 when I was in San Francisco to cover Macworld 2007, we rented a car and visited the Mothership in Cupertino.

After our tour of 1 Infinite Loop, I sought out the restroom and found it, marked with this sign that I photographed.

It stunned me and has sat restless in my mind these 20 years. How can this be the Apple HQ men's bathroom sign??

Edit: It's about the text centering.

  11. I'm fascinated by #signs and #signage (hence an entire Instagram account devoted thereto). I'm also fascinated by objects that just persist, perhaps despite time, perhaps just because of inertia and benign neglect. Or, maybe this ice machine, which I'm sure was in this spot near Clinton Square in #Syracuse when we lived there decades ago, is even still in service for some unknown reason.

  12. Wrapping up at Pilchuck and bouncing around Tacoma, Seattle for a day or two. Here is that 22mm borosilicate star I made. Brian Gillespie the Rhino torch maker got it at the auction party for scholarships an stuff.

I also made that eclipse and a purple an pink hand pulled phosphor coated color test.

The thick borosilicate is interesting... Makes me wanna get some of those oxygenated torches.
