Hitler’s Third Reich sought to avoid the extreme food shortages and inflationary nightmares of World War I. It imposed higher taxes on the wealthy and expanded allowances for military families. But it did not stop there. Through the persecution of Jews, it systematically confiscated their property. The author estimates this amount at 15 billion to 20 billion marks—equivalent to up to 260 trillion Korean won in today’s value.
This wealth was redirected to soldiers’ salaries and social welfare for ordinary citizens. As a result, Germans’ tax burden decreased while maintaining a high standard of living. The Holocaust was not only a mass murder but also a massive plunder, serving as a nationwide redistribution of wealth. In Slovakia, 101,423 hectares (about 300 million pyeong) of Jewish-owned land were confiscated—enough to provide small farms for 20,000 landless people.
It was not just Jews. The entire occupied Europe became a vast treasury for Germany. Central banks in occupied territories were integrated into Germany’s wartime economy. In Czechoslovakia, over 70% of bank assets were filled with German bonds by the end of the war. Deposits from Czech citizens were used to purchase German bonds, which flowed directly into war costs. While Europe was being reduced to ruins by war, Germans enjoyed a standard of living not much worse than in peacetime.
In short, the Third Reich maintained a sophisticated 'plunder economy system.' At this point, it becomes clear why Göring, Hitler’s subordinate, said, 'War must feed war.' However, this structure meant that winning the war was the only way out.
Hitler’s top priority was 'not losing the people’s support.' Therefore, he had to secure new territories and resources through invasion and commit mass murder. But this is uncomfortable for Germans to accept. Does it not mean that ordinary Germans, who did not directly commit crimes, benefited from the system? Did they not enjoy prosperity while turning a blind eye to the obvious source of that prosperity?
This raises fundamental questions: How far can people who remain silent while enjoying prosperity sustained by others’ sacrifices be considered free from responsibility? When does a person begin to ignore suffering if it translates into their own comfort? Furthermore, to what extent can a state justify redistributing wealth by seizing the rights and property of a specific group to promise prosperity for the majority?"
