He volunteered to serve in the Abraham Lincoln Battalion, sailed for Spain on the SS Manhattan on 2/25/1938, & served as a machine gunner. He, along with 2 other soldiers, inadvertently walked into the fascist lines, was captured & held as a POW; he was among 71 exchanged on 4/22/1939.

@susankayequinn I'm not convinced "is or is not human nature" is a worthwhile argument in itself at all.
It may be, it may not be, but its wrong either way. I think we all need to focus on the wrongness of fascism, whether its human nature or not.
