I carabinieri a difesa delle specie protette sequestrano cinque zanne di elefante africano
Nella giornata del 17 settembre 2025 i #Carabinieri del Nucleo #CITES – Distaccamento di Torino Caselle hanno eseguito controlli mirati presso alcuni laboratori di tassidermia in provincia di Torino, nell’ambito della campagna #EMPACT2022 e dell’Operational Action Plan (#OAP) #EnviCrime 2024- 2025 – OA 5.1 “Trafficking of Fauna” dell'Unione Europea #UE, finalizzata al contrasto del traffico illegale di specie protette.
Durante uno dei controlli sono state rinvenute e poste sotto sequestro cinque zanne grezze di elefante africano (#Loxodonta africana), specie inserita nell’Appendice I della Convenzione CITES e considerata in pericolo di estinzione. Le zanne sono risultate di dimensioni considerevoli (misuravano tra 190 e 212 centimetri di lunghezza), a conferma della provenienza da esemplari adulti e del rilevante valore commerciale del materiale sequestrato.
Gli specimen erano detenuti in assenza della documentazione prevista che ne attestasse la provenienza legale e il possesso lecito. Il titolare dell’attività, un italiano sulla quarantina, è stato pertanto denunciato alla competente Autorità Giudiziaria per detenzione illecita di parti di specie protette, in violazione della normativa nazionale e internazionale sul commercio di specie a rischio di estinzione (Regolamento (CE) n. 338/97 e Legge 150/1992).
L’operazione si inserisce nel quadro delle attività coordinate a livello europeo per il contrasto al crimine ambientale e rappresenta un’importante azione di tutela della biodiversità e di salvaguardia delle specie minacciate inserite nella #C.I.T.E.S.. La C.I.T.E.S. – Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora è una Convenzione internazionale che tutela le specie a rischio di estinzione. Per tutte le specie animali e vegetali incluse nella Convenzione – oltre 40.000 – è necessario dimostrare la legale provenienza mediante idonea documentazione, indispensabile per la loro detenzione e commercializzazione. Nel caso di zanne grezze di elefante, tale documentazione deve essere richiesta al Nucleo Carabinieri CITES territorialmente competente. È vietato prelevare esemplari in natura, detenerli, cederli o commercializzarli senza la prescritta documentazione. I Carabinieri dei Nuclei CITES su tutto il territorio nazionale sono preposti ai controlli sul commercio di specie protette e al contrasto del traffico illegale delle stesse su tutto il territorio nazionale. Il commercio di specie rare, come l’avorio di elefante, sia grezzo che lavorato, è purtroppo ancora oggi molto diffuso.
