Wahnsinn, wie es u.a. @DIEZEIT schafft, einen Artikel zum Tod Klaus-Michael Kühne zu schreiben, ohne zu erwähnen, dass sein Reichtum u.a. aus dem #Holocaust stammt. Wie Historiker*innen aufzeigten spielten Kühne und Nagel während der sogenannten Möbel-Aktion 1942 eine entscheidende Rolle. as Logistikunternehmen verfrachtete Möbel und andere Güter von deportierten Jüd*innen aus den besetzten Ländern nach Deutschland, wo es verkauft wurde. Bei uns gibt es Infos zu Kühne und Nagel, u.a. in einer dokumentierten Anschlagserklärung aus 2020. https://rdl.de/beitrag/angriff-auf-logistikunternehmen-k-hne-und-nagel-basel Aktivist*innen hatten das Logistikunternehmen Kühne und Nagel in Basel angegriffen. Kritisiert wurde die Nicht-Aufarbeitung der NS Geschichte des Konzerns. "Der "arische" Teil der Konzernbesitzer nutzte das Jahr 1933, um den jüdischen Teilhaber Adolf Mass (ermordet 1944 in Auschwitz) aus dem Unternehmen zu drängen und die Weichen auf volle Unterstützung des Nationalsozialismus zu stellen. Am 13. Februar 1970 legte ein bislang unbekannter Täter Feuer im jüdischen Gemeindezentrums in der Reichenbachstraße in #munchen . 7 Menschen starben, darunter mehrere #Holocaust -Überlebende. Jahrzehntelang war unklar, wer das Feuer gelegt hat. Palästinenser, linke Tupamaros oder doch Neonazis? Jetzt hat die Generalstaatsanwaltschaft Ermittlungsergebisse vorgelegt. Es war wohl ein Neonazi. Mein Beitrag für @BR24

Für Adele Haas ist die NS-Zeit ein einziger, nicht endender Albtraum. Insgesamt 7 Konzentrationslager überlebt sie im Laufe ihrer langen Leidensgeschichte, die schon bei ihrer Geburt beginnt. Denn zu diesem Zeitpunkt, im Jahr 1907, versteht noch kaum jemand, was Intergeschlechtlichkeit eigentlich bedeutet. Nämlich, dass Menschen geboren werden können, ohne dass ihre Geschlechtsmerkmale eindeutig weiblich oder eindeutig männlich sind.

Holocaust stories, both true and fictional, tend to repeat the same few clichés over and over. There’s the innocent child who only partially understands what’s happening (*Diary of Anne Frank*, *Boy in the Striped Pajamas*). There’s the sentimental redemption story that focuses on a small individual act (*Life is Beautiful*, *The Book Thief*). And of course, there’s the good German, or at least the morally conflicted one (*Schindler’s List*, *The Reader*).
You won’t find any of these tropes in *The Escape Artist*.

Upton Sinclair famously said, 'It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it.' Well, here it was not just people’s livelihoods called into question, but their lives. Perhaps some genuinely didn’t believe the warnings; perhaps others were merely in denial. I’m not so sure such a distinction is even all that clear-cut. As the French philosopher Raymond Aron later said about the Holocaust, 'I knew, but I did not believe it. And because I did not believe it, I didn’t know.'
This part is a bit more speculative, but I suspect a third mitigating factor may be that people in the 1940s more generally—especially outside the West—just didn’t see themselves as having the same level of control over their own destinies as we do today. Broadly speaking, we’re talking about societies that were largely still rural and traditional, with pervasive economic insecurity, a long history of milder persecution, and no experience of democracy or concept of individual liberalism. One can of course take this idea too far—many Eastern Europeans of the era displayed extraordinary initiative. But I wonder if many generations of living under more repressive social, economic, and political conditions led to a more constrained, even fatalistic outlook on life.
Of course, many did fight back—in the Warsaw Ghetto, in Sobibor, in the forests of Belarus, and in countless smaller acts of resistance that the historical record has only partially preserved—though not in numbers that satisfied Rudi. Throughout the remainder of his life, long after the war is over, he will continue to hear stories of people who did see his report and still did nothing. Still, he never stops believing that if the truth of the Holocaust had been more widely known, it could have changed everything. One could even argue that Rudi’s unshakeable faith in the power of his warning, no matter how much evidence to the contrary he receives, is itself an example of exactly the kind of denial he criticizes in others.
Still, before we get too smug about how much more agentic we are than people in the 1940s: the human instinct to look away in the face of horror, or to simply pretend it isn’t happening, is timeless. It happened during the Armenian Genocide, in Cambodia, in Rwanda, in Bosnia, in Darfur, and in Myanmar. And it’s happening, in different forms and under different names, in Sudan and Gaza right now."

"How does eastern Europe commemorate the Roma Holocaust?
In 2015, the EU designated August 2 as the European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day. In Germany, the day is marked with memorial services, educational activites and public addresses. And in eastern Europe?
It took decades before Germany recognized the Romani Holocaust — the Nazi genocide of 500,000 European Roma and Sinti during World War II. Several more decades passed before the European Holocaust Memorial Day for Sinti and Roma became an official German and European day of remembrance, celebrated each year on August 2.
Based on initiatives by Polish Roma groups, the Nazi liquidation of the so-called 'Gypsy Family Camp' in the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration and Extermination Camp on the evening of August 2-3, 1944, was first commemorated half a century later, in 1994.

Around 600,000 Roma call Hungary home. Here, since 2005, various sites have been observing the Romani Holocaust Memorial Day on August 2, following a parliamentary resolution. In Budapest alone, there are three places of remembering for the Roma murdered during the Holocaust where commemorative events are held. The reason for these and numerous other memorial sites is that Hungarian Roma were the target of deportations and killings particularly following German occupation in 1944 and under the rule of the Arrow Cross, Hungary's fascist regime.
Historical remembrance in Hungary is also deeply intertwined with the racist murdering spree directed at Roma people between 2008 and 2009. In this time, four Hungarian neo-Nazis killed a total of six people and injured 55 others, some of them severely. They planned their final hate crime for the night of August 2, in the eastern village of Kisleta."

"The #Detroit #RidefortheLiving is one of many around the globe that are adjuncts to the original Ride for the Living, held every year in #Poland. The original Ride begins at the nefarious #Nazi #concentrationcamp at #Auschwitz- #Birkenau, Poland, and ends at the #Jewish Community Center in #Kraków, Poland.
This international Ride for the Living takes place over four days in Poland in June. It features a 60-mile #bike ride as well as other activities related to the #Holocaust and Jewish community #history. It ends with a #Shabbat dinner. Most important, the Ride commemorates those who were lost in the Holocaust and the resilience of the Jewish people. It’s an impressive event. Just ask Cheryl and Arnie Berlin who took the Ride in Poland (June 7, 2018).
The JCC in Kraków is a prime exemplar for survival and resilience. Before World War II, Poland had the largest Jewish population in #Europe at 3 million."

@sinabhfuil people who said "oh, but we didn't know that the #Holocaust was happening" during the actual Holocaust were as disingenuous and morally vacuous as the people now saying "oh, but we don't know whether the #GazaGenocide is actually a #Genocide."
People who were paying attention to the evidence did know then, and do know now; and those who aren't paying attention are #culpable and #complicit.
To defend the memory of the Holocaust while denying the genocide in #Gaza is purest evil.
