'WE ARE ENDING OUR EMERGENCY OPERATIONS IN TER APEL
We have made the extremely difficult decision to end our operations in Ter Apel from September 7th.
We have chosen this for various reasons, but most of all because we refuse to be a plaster on a wound the government will not take accountability for.
In recent weeks, Trigion security guards have started directing people to us for tents when they are refused entry into the AZC.
In the first few months, we were informed that tents were forbidden, and lots of our tents were taken or damaged by the municipality.
Now, it seems COA is relying on them and on our presence instead of implementing permanent solutions.
This is unacceptable and deeply concerning to us.
If people can be directed to an organisation like MiGreat for a tent when there is no place for them in the broken reception system, our emergency response risks becoming an accepted part of that system.
This is not our role: we are fighting against an inhumane system that places people in undignified conditions, and we have no intention of becoming part of it.
As a small grassroots organisation, we also unfortunately do not have the capacity or financial resources to continue our work in Ter Apel long-term.
What happens now?
We will stop our 24/7 presence on the Ter Apel field from September 7th.
But we are not leaving completely: we will continue being present in Ter Apel on a smaller scale and keep monitoring the situation there, and we will keep fighting for the rights and dignity of people on the move and holding institutions to account.
What about all the donations?
Almost all material donations have been used in the last few months. Anything left over will be kept for future projects or donated to other organisations.
All monetary donations have been used for our operations on the ground. They have gone to buying supplies like tents, coffee and tea, and food and games, as well as paying for transport and stipends for our volunteers and field coordinators.
A sincere thank you to everyone who donated and volunteered: we literally. could not have done it without you.
Are you abandoning the people in Ter Apel?
This was not an easy decision for us to make, and our leaving does not mean the need has stopped completely.
People still need permanent shelter, but the only ones that are responsible for that are the government and COA. By staying, we risk becoming complicit in the same system we are fighting.
But this does not mean we are abandoning people: we will continue pushing for better conditions and monitoring what is happening, and we will evaluate whether to jump back in if the situation gets worse.
Choosing to close this project has been an incredibly difficult decision.
We still completely believe in the work we have done until now, and we will never stop fighting for freedom of movement and safe and dignified reception conditions for everyone.
Thank you for supporting us through this, and we hope you will continue to fight with us.'

"A senior judge has accused the Home Office of relying on “AI hallucinated” information to refuse an asylum claim.
The case relates to a Moroccan woman and her child who fled her country after experiencing forced underage marriage and extreme violence, including rape. The woman claimed asylum on the basis of fears that she would be killed by her husband: a powerful, previously convicted criminal.
The Home Office refused her case, citing evidence from a supposedly independent and authoritative document known as a country policy information note (CPIN), which they said confirmed that Morocco would be safe for her.
