  1. From Volunteerism to Duty: Reforming Peer Review with Tokens | Communications of the ACM
    dl.acm.org/doi/full/10.1145/37

An interesting idea on how to incentivise peer-review by conditioning the ability to publish on it.

  6. ‼️ A camp of 25 families was bombed ‼️ I'm here every two hours for the next few days to get as much support as possible for their emergency needs: tarps, replacement supplies like clothes, water storage for the camp, and bathrooms. Because everything is gone.

    Anything helps: chuffed.org/project/erc

  11. The occupation bombed a displacement camp, and 25 families have lost EVERYTHING.

This is a rapid relief effort to bring them the most basic needs. Some are still sleeping on the street. They also need to relocate away from a collapsing building. All boldness welcome chuffed.org/project/erc

  16. I'm a PhD student in TCS and I guess, at this point, I'm kind of known in my group for being very annoyed at people talking about LLMs all the damn time.

Yet, I have recently been convinced – not persuaded or forced, convinced – to get an LLM account at one of the big companies. Those companies still heavily subsidize LLM usage. For end users, at least. Not so much for institutions. So my instutes policy is "buy your account privately, then get reimbursed". This is perfectly rational. It saves them 100s to 1000s of euros per researcher, at no (monetary) cost to both the researcher nor the institute.

I haven't done this yet, for annoyance and procastination reasons mostly.

"without protectors I would have never succeeded"

This is a problem across academia and other places of power - people are protecting and promoting abusers, including those who rape children.

  26. Cognitive Entrenchment is a common problem for specialists. You do one thing, you do it well, and you can't see outside the hole you dug yourself into. It's a trade-off, and it's why we need generalists.

  31. Ok, after a while, I got access to set up my own virtual machines on my new institution's Azure cloud and since I see the prices of even the most basic machines... this is absolutely insane what Microsoft charges here.
I do not know if I am actually allowed to share the costs, but for comparison, my old institution had their own scientific computing infra, based on a pretty much entirely open source stack and the same resources pretty much cost about a third.
I mean, ffs it would even cost me less to deploy my stuff on DigitalOcean, which is not even a very cheap vendor.
Imagine what we could do even within the Canton of Zürich if UZH, ETH and ZHAW just pooled resources.
At this point, I might just buy myself a private server rack to put next to my office laptop.
