  7. So I finished Tegmark's "Our Mathematical Universe" which was definitely not as annoying as Loeb's book, but I think that's because I kinda expect mathematicians to be total fucking weirdos.

"Our Mathematical Universe" is one of those books that has a few chapters that don't age well. There's bits near the end when Tegmark waxes about how awesome the Singularity will be, and haha oof, that shit probably sounded way more cool and exciting a decade ago.

The rest of it is kinda take it or leave it, like this all feels like semantics and general labelling issues right? Like, what is a particle? What stuff is a particle made of? What if it's ✨ made of math? ✨ Sure, why not? It's about as good as any other guess we have.

The unfortunate thing (for me) is that I've been exposed to stuff like this all my life, this isn't really *new* information for me, I'm familiar with the Copenhagen interpretation of QM, I'm familiar with the different varieties and levels of parallel universes, etc. I want something more.

And that's very much a 'me' issue, because really the only place to go from here is to university to actually learn particle physics or whatever, and I ain't got time for that. Would that I could just learn everything, but I can't, I learned all the superficial stuff, so now documentaries bore me.

Do I recommend "Our Mathematical Universe"? Eh. I guess if you want a discussion into some of the peculiarities of QM and parallel universes, sure? But I'd also read a lot of other books and watch a lot of other documentaries just to round things out, there's a lot of voices in this space.

One thing that I feel "Our Mathematical Universe" covers well is the phenomenon of being "scooped" while doing research, like hey, it happens. You could get palpitations wondering if you're The Very First with an idea, then casually read a 50 year old paper and realize that no, you are not.

The Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences 2026 is awarded to Emmanuel Candès and Camillo De Lellis, "for their breakthrough contributions to the use of deep techniques from mathematical analysis to rigorously understand applied problems in information theory, signal processing and statistics on the one hand, and to the study of singularities in geometric measure theory and fluid dynamics on the other."
