  1. Thinking how much I hate wiring and wondering about optical fiber powered sensors. That is, send enough laser power down fiber that small photo electric cell harvests, which in turn powers small sensors, their values multiplexed back down the fiber.

Here's a paper from 2024 along those lines.

Not sure if I understand FBG's fully, are they a way to reinject signals and/or an optical modulating technique? Like could you use only optical components to sense temperature: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distribu

  7. Gibt es eigentlich keine europäischen Händler, die #Singlemode #Glasfaser ohne(!) Stecker und größere Ummantelung an Privatkunden verkaufen? (Also keine Patchkabel!)
Auf #Aliexpress, s. Screenshot, gibt es einige chinesische Angebote mit natürlich entsprechenden Herausforderungen beim Import.

  13. I've stumbled on the SFPTotal Whistle, and I've got some questions:

    - Would it be possible to program fs.com #SFP optics with that? Or do they really require the FSBox?
    - Assuming that the SFPTotal Whistle is essentialy just a USB to I²C adapter with an SFP-shaped hole, are there any OSHW/FLOSS projects out there I should now about instead? I don't mind tinkering. Can't I just slap an I²C interface IC on an SFP frame?

  23. Fiber to the living room is now going to my Mellanox switch, I found the problem!

Apparently I used these odd 850nm/550M SFPs when I ran this originally? I didn't know that I could do 850nm over OS2 fiber, but apparently it's doable as the link was working with them in place..!

Now with a proper 1310nm SFP in the living room switch it's all up and working.

  27. Welp, one of the cables I bought off of eBay was bad..!

It's the QSP breakout cable that goes to four OS2 fibers. I plugged all four into the patch panel, plugged the single fiber going upstairs into one of the ports and... no light received on any port. I moved the cables around and nope, still no light on any of them.

If this was for work, this is the point we'd send someone out to replace the cable... but it's only me and I only have the one cable.
