Cutting corners.
Laid the skirt over the muddy bit, which is now walkable 😆
Then dug out the huge area for the extended corner skirt. Last time I did this first and that was a mistake because the huge hole was very much in the way, so this time I did everything else first, then dug the corner. Experience!
Hoping to fill the trench back in today. The corner skirting goes slow as there's a lot of cutting and two-way grading.
Some black crud goes over the joints where I've trimmed the glue. Where its not trimmed it has a waterproof skin.
Also had to carefully dig out the adjoining piece from the previous section. I had a board there to protect it but that didn't work too well.

Trust me they were very happy on this wet walk - they look a bit bewildered at being asked to sit down while i checked the water tank (quite full of silt ‘cos of the rain this summer) #dogsofmastodon #homestead #flatcoatretriever #spaniel

Waited half a day for the mud to dry out a little and then squished around in it to drill a bunch more holes into the rocks, installed rebar, an end piece so the concrete doesn't run out and then the vertical part of the insulation, which are always a bit tricky to align.
In this section there were a lot of protruding rocks to be insulated around.
Then the extended footing on the bottom and the sun went down again.
Horizontal part tomorrow, I hope!

Since that's no good, I've been doing some other jobs this morning and hoping for it to dry a bit.
Under the old harrow I hauled away were several small Linden saplings. I dug them up and replanted them by the forest edge near the spring. Planting trees brightens the mood.
Then hauled some more junk up from the valley shack, including parts of this tiny hut that fell down. I found a message, someone had written "pasaku namelis" (little fairy house) on the inside above the door. Curious. Always wondered what that thing was for. Fairies, apparently. They seem to have moved out a while ago.

Not satisfied, I decided to experiment some more by mixing 1L of milk to .5L of pure #liqueur to make nocino #cream.

Rest of the machine got dirty grease wiped off, washed and then greased again. Found two problems, both on the dozer blade pins.
Bottom had a crushed collar around the grease nipple, that was probably me trying to juggle concrete beams without a thumb. Hammered it back in shape.
The top grease nipple wouldn't accept any grease. A battle ensued, the victims of which included a pile of rags, my t-shirt, the hose of the grease gun and half a cartridge of grease when I had to load and repair the other grease gun.
Turned out the pin is just very tight fitting and with the good pump I got some grease in there. Should get easier with wear!
One track needed a little more tension. Luckily no grease needed for that.
Ready!

Excavator maintenance. Its been a year already.
Found the throttle frame on the engine was bent. I recall sometime in winter the throttle briefly sticking, which I put down to it being frozen. Working it loose probably bent the frame. Bent it back.
Other than that, the little 1-cylinder Koop diesel is doing ok. Very light on service items, the fuel filter is see-through, the oil filter is really just a re-usable strainer and the air filter can be blown out and will last a long time if you don't work in a dusty quarry.
There is some dust from the rubber pads on the flexible engine/pump coupling, I guess that will need to be replaced when they're worn through. The rubber is available separately.

China excavator upgrade: Hinges and latches for the rear door.
Because in order to get to the engine you had to unbolt four big bolts, two of them from underneath, then lift off the door. Then lift it back on and fiddle in the bolts. Made it super annoying to check the oil level or hook up a battery booster in winter.
I ordered these parts just after getting the machine last year and finally got around to installing them.
Fits nicely, the door swings open wide and can be lifted off the hinges if need be.
Now the oil can be checked as often as it should. And it saves precious time.

There's a LOT going on right now including us potentially needing to give up the land and move. If you're capable of upping your subscription to the paid tier it's just FIVE dollars a month and it helps us out a lot. We also still accept donations through our (currently slightly neglected) co-owner's ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/sigillosacro. We're offering a lot of good stuff for free and we do it because it needs to be done but also any contributions help us justify the time and energy we're spending doing this instead of other things that could keep us afloat.
Anyway. Love you all, stay safe out there, and thank you for reading and sharing if you do!

We finally have an update for you all on what has been going on here! This gives a little info on why we've been so distant, what we've been navigating, and some very exciting additions to the Ranch.
https://rancholibertad.com/quarterly-updates-awaiting-the-return-of-the-light/
I hope to share some very fun pictures of our new animal residents soon, and I feel like I have a lot to say about this season as a whole that I'd like to share here rather than in a longer form newsletter.
Please email us your questions if you'd like to participate in this quarter's paid sub Q&A. Last quarter we were able to give some very in-depth answers to wonderful questions, so if you have something pertinent to your own project or goals now is a great time to learn from our experiences! Paid subscribers have also been promised a gift for the Solstice season, and if you're one of them please send us your address so that we may send you some goodies from the land.
I hope to be more active here very soon, I wish to catch up on all of your posts and updates and be a little more participatory in this community. It is almost the season, we have one more push before we'll be settling back into a routine and having more leisure time.

Auto-horizon explained in one picture.
This adds an extra hydraulic cylinder on one side of the three point hitch that is electronically controlled to regulate the attachment to be always level with the horizon, no matter how tilted the tractor is.
Kubota calls theirs "Monroematic". Our Iseki has it too, not sure what it's called there, the computer translates it with "horizontal rotary".
Pretty cool stuff for the 1970s. Revolutionary in working flooded rice fields, which is why most grey import Japanese tractors have it.

As I said last night, homemade beef jerky and crusty Italian bread were on the menu to be made today.
Unfortunately, the best laid plans of mice and men always run awry.
I had a migraine for the majority of today, and the meat that I pulled out for the jerky was pretty thick, and was thawing slowly. Therefore, the most I could do jerky-wise was getting the meat cut and into the marinade.
Then, it was onto the crusty bread. Simple to make, and absolutely delicious. I happened to overwork the dough a little bit, so the loaf came out more dense than I would've preferred-- which you can see in the last photo-- but it is still tasty.
Trust me-- I'm eating it typing this post.

It is No Spend January on the homestead.
This means-- aside from the obvious of not spending money-- that it is time to get creative with what we have in the freezers and pantries.
There is very minimal spending allowed, and it is really only if necessary for fresh produce. This is fine.
I made a batch of potato and onion soup that I have been eating through, as well as having eaten a small piece of the family's pot roast last night. Tonight, they had sausage and potatoes.
While looking through what we have, I decided to make butter with the heavy cream we had leftover from another project... which lead to the next plan of making a crusty Italian bread tomorrow that can be eaten with the soup, dipped in oil, or slathered in butter.
Not one to be known to take on an appropriate amount of projects simultaneously... homemade beef jerky is also on the menu for tomorrow. I figure the jerky is a good protein packed snack that will last for a bit, and even longer if I vacuum-pack it.
Wish me luck!

#Lovage seeds were used in many ancient Roman cuisines. People now only use celery seeds. But lovage seeds have more intense flavor. One mature lovage plant can easily give you a couple of months or even a year of good #spice in your kitchen. The entire lovage plant is edible, including its leaves, stems, roots, flowers, and seeds. #homestead #permaculture
