  2. Cutting corners.

Laid the skirt over the muddy bit, which is now walkable 😆

Then dug out the huge area for the extended corner skirt. Last time I did this first and that was a mistake because the huge hole was very much in the way, so this time I did everything else first, then dug the corner. Experience!

Hoping to fill the trench back in today. The corner skirting goes slow as there's a lot of cutting and two-way grading.

Some black crud goes over the joints where I've trimmed the glue. Where its not trimmed it has a waterproof skin.

Also had to carefully dig out the adjoining piece from the previous section. I had a board there to protect it but that didn't work too well.

  3. Trust me they were very happy on this wet walk - they look a bit bewildered at being asked to sit down while i checked the water tank (quite full of silt ‘cos of the rain this summer) #dogsofmastodon #homestead #flatcoatretriever #spaniel

  4. Waited half a day for the mud to dry out a little and then squished around in it to drill a bunch more holes into the rocks, installed rebar, an end piece so the concrete doesn't run out and then the vertical part of the insulation, which are always a bit tricky to align.

In this section there were a lot of protruding rocks to be insulated around.

Then the extended footing on the bottom and the sun went down again.

    Horizontal part tomorrow, I hope!

  5. Since that's no good, I've been doing some other jobs this morning and hoping for it to dry a bit.

Under the old harrow I hauled away were several small Linden saplings. I dug them up and replanted them by the forest edge near the spring. Planting trees brightens the mood.

Then hauled some more junk up from the valley shack, including parts of this tiny hut that fell down. I found a message, someone had written "pasaku namelis" (little fairy house) on the inside above the door. Curious. Always wondered what that thing was for. Fairies, apparently. They seem to have moved out a while ago.

  15. Beans did great this year, we ate loads, froze some and they just kept coming.

Peas are done, we let some dry for seeds and tore out the plants and supports.

The last two surviving sweetcorn cobs were the largest and so got plucked and peeled to dry for seeds.

Also got seeds from the two tobacco plants that popped up randomly after we dug over the former greenhouse for the first time. Nobody here smokes, but I'm kinda curious to experiment with them.

    Cucumbers are done too.

Even managed to save a few hazelnuts from the mad squirrels this year.

Just pumpkins, sunflowers and apples left now. And the apples are pretty sour still. Not enough sun. Endless rain.

  16. My attempt at capturing some free phosphate fertilizer: Throw grass clippings under the storks nest and let them poop on it all summer. When the storks leave, collect the enriched clippings and throw them on top of the compost heap.

Alternatively we could just plant root veggies under there 🤔

They poop a lot, being forced to grow from egg to adult in just a few months and they learn how to do it over the side of the nest early on. Unless its storming it all lands in a 3m radius :)

  17. Supply Dolyak.

There's some cement bags under there somewhere as well.

    And Dysperbit in the trunk.

  18. Pouring station ready. And dirt piles moved out of the way.

Will see what the weather brings tomorrow. Been a bit unruly in some parts of the country with roofs flying away and trees blowing over.

  19. Corner closed and skirt laid. Yes, the corner skirt extends that far.

As this cornerstone had moved (a few mm in 90 years), there's a void for an extended concrete footing under the skirt.

Now a little bit of cleanup, some bitumen, a thin layer of sand for drainage and the dirt can go back in to cover the skirt, protecting it.

Its rather hot today and this white foam is very reflective, so I'm being roasted from all sides 😓

    #Foundation #Renovation #DIY #LogHouse #Homestead #Insulation #Foam

  20. Many holes drilled, which is slow work. The Makita drill bit is more durable, lasted about twice as long as even the super expensive Bosch one. And these were actually quite cheap, although that was a reduced price.

The rocks look like hedgehogs now with anchor bolts and rebar in them but got quickly covered up by foam panels. Almost got to the corner before it got too late and I ran out of juice.

One round rock was under a foundation stone and so remained in place, with the foam cut around it and then added back on the outside to make up for lost thickness.

Few more panels and then the skirt, which requires careful grading and another round of digging as it extends further out on the corner.

  21. Back in the trenches of the foundation project. Yesterday I chiselled off the last of the bad old concrete, which was so poorly adhered it came off in big chunks.

The granite wedges I picked out for re-use, then filled some new concrete into the big gaps under the beam.

While that cures, I've dug out the cornerstone, levered out some big rocks and pressure washed the stones.

Next the anchors, rebar and insulation foam panels (which double as "lost" formwork). Lets see how the Makita drill bits hold up to the granite.

  22. Phew, skirt laid, bitumen on the seams and then filled in a hurry while the sky filled with dark clouds.

Never dug so fast, usually I've got the excavator at half throttle for more precision but apparently I can go fast when I need to now.

Well, if I don't mind leaving a big mess to be sorted out later. But nothing is going to fly away or turn into a swimming pool now. Hopefully.

Filling before concreting should greatly reduce the supports needed, although I still need one for the top before I can pour concrete in there.

    #Foundation #Renovation #DIY #Insulation #LogHouse #Homestead #Building

  23. Footing foam went in.

Its just as sunny as yesterday, but there's a breeze going making it more tolerable.

Also the occasional gust smacking a foam panel in my face or chasing one down in the yard.

Skirt/apron (never quite sure which term is right, I guess both work) went in next, with the first part of a corner extending outwards, because corners leak more and thus need more protection.

I'm racing to finish and close this before the next big rain 😰

    #Foundation #Renovation #DIY #LogHouse #Homestead #Insulation

  24. Late again, but progress was made.

Hacked away the clay and some boulders on this stretch. This was more manual labour than on the previous side, because with the concrete overhang the excavator couldn't get as close to the wall. Also because it was hot and this is the south side and I of course ended up doing it at noon 😰

Next a lot of drilling, finishing the final hole as my last SDS bit melted. These rocks are really hard. The same drill bit will go through concrete like butter but die after about a dozen holes in granite.

Installed anchor bolts to connect the big stones (and old concrete) to the new concrete. Then more holes for rebar spacers/supports, the long rebar pieces and the top XPS panels.

    #Foundation #Renovation #LogHouse #DIY #Homestead #Insulation #Building

  25. High time I got these concrete pylons levelled. Stuff arriving soon.

First attempt was to do it with wedges cut from birch logs. This would've worked if I had a few days to spend on it, but I did not.

Our little excavator can't lift the thick end of these (I worked out they weigh about 1.17 tons each), but it can reduce their weight enough so I could do the rest with some levers, including removing most of the tilt.

Then I wedged rocks under it for support and voila, level enough. At least until the next winter. I don't want to pour deep concrete footings under these nice big trees and fuck up their roots in the process, so this will have to do.

    #Concrete #Pylon #Homestead #Levelling

  26. Removed the supports and the end plugs, tidied up around and then dug the trench wider.

Some simple grading with a few buckets sand and the first skirt insulation panels are in. Once these are closed all around the house, we have upgraded our naked stone foundation to an insulated frost-protected shallow foundation.

This carves out a huge slab of terrain under the house and adds it as thermal mass to the house. A temperature gradient will develop in the soil below the skirt and a small amount of heat loss will keep the soil underneath from freezing.

A huge upgrade for an old house compared to a naked stone foundation exposed to -30°C air in winter. The soil stays relatively warm by comparison.

    #Foundation #Insulation #FPSF #DIY #Homestead #Renovation

  27. Got the foam footing in place, everything supported and the ends closed off.

Rolled out the lottery machine (made in Derbyshire in the good old pre-Brexaster days) and greased it up.

Site supervisor Chicken (the cat) signed off on it.

Then I dragged out some more reclaimed wood to build a mixing platform but started to notice early warning signs of a heat stroke, so I packed it up and called it a day.

Cooled my head with a banana ice cream and then ate it, too.

  28. Scored some Finnish foam to bury around the house.

Bikuva had the best prices and lists stock online. When stock arrives, you have to hurry to get some.

A few weeks ago we saw someone else on the roadside picking somewhat smashed foam panels out of the ditch and loading them back onto his trailer. Remembering that, I made doubly sure my straps were tight.

  29. Out of dirt error.

I know where to get some, but now it's raining and mud sucks, so I'm organizing the sewing box instead.

  30. Goat pen #2 is also going down.

It was full of thorny fuckers*, which got cut down and piled up for chipping, although they don't even make usable woodchips due to the incredibly hard thorns that remain intact. They'll go through boots and tyres.

Maybe LV/EE want them for planting along the border? Couple meters thicket of these and no infantry will get through. Cheaper than barb wire and always stays sharp.

  35. EDIT: car insurance is now only 1 month behind instead of 3! Let's see what else we can do to improve this situation, fedi!

Atha is bureaucratically and politically disabled from getting a job for a while.
Inamruzui is partly disabled by POTS and sleep issues. Employment is not a simple matter for them to arrange.

Atha was at the food bank yesterday and was given two small shopping bags of canned and dried food for hir and Inamruzui to last a month. Let's raise some funds for the rest of their grocery needs! $300 might be a good start for that.

Let's take another chunk out of Atha's debts! The IRS is being ass, cranking up its non-payment fees. They alone want $860ish. The rest of this part of the request goes to credit cards and car loan and car insurance, with any small change for food.
    #MUTUALAID #URGENTMUTUALAID
$373.98/$2500 for debts and bills this week!

Then there's the matter of solar batteries: the #Vulpibus systems struggle to store enough energy to keep running overnight in winter.
We need to get them AT LEAST 2 more (ideally 10 more) batteries at around $250 a pop. So $500 (ideally $2500)
Any small change from that goes to cable crimps and mounting hardware.
They also need battery insulation and heaters!

Then there's the matter of insulating more of the bus itself. Not only is the insulation itself needed, so is something to hold it all in place. A layer of thin plywood would be good. Also not a cheap matter.

The bus grows heavier as more is added to it, so care needs to be taken to choose lightweight but sturdy things to fit.

  36. The #Vulpibus folks are now just past the halfway point of their journey, which is only possible thanks to your #fedihelp #mutualaid!

But to get all the way there #gtfomystate, hundreds of dollars are still needed for the cost of fuel and food in this capitalist nightmare, and a few hundred more for preventing their car from being towed away for non payment of loans and insurance.

Let's call the goal $1000 over this next few days. This will help with a couple of maintenance things too hopefully.

Progress was made this last few days on the #electrical breaker box, on sewing of a lovely cloak for Inara, and on the gene editing system ( gitlab.vulpinedesigns.com and be sure to familiarise yourself with Qt Creator if you want to see the concepts being laid out first paw).

You are all amazing people living in this same messed up world as us. You know what you can and cannot manage to do. Be strong. Be loved. Receive the tolerance you give.

#Freestuff along the route always appreciated and considered.

One thing currently on the to get list is a clothes washing machine, preferably front load as a single or small unit sized combo machine with tumble dryer.

Another is a countertop sized dishwasher.

And a three quarters height, narrow width fridge-freezer.

If you have any of these spare in IA, NE or CO in working or easy-repair condition, please let us know.

    ---

When the bus reaches its destination, a commune is to be established with its own off grid systems and food growing. The lab is to be expanded. We intend to help people escape and learn and transform into what they truly want to be.

When I say we, I mean a broad loose-knit network of agents across the world who are a decentralised, unstoppable force for good. The Vulpibus is a catalyst and a tool, the people know how to use it.

Atha is to me a being with great potential focussing on survival when hir real impact should be felt from hir work on gene editing tools for freedom of form.

I fight for hir and everyone to get a fair chance at making that happen. I fight with nice words, sharp words and blunt words, and if needed I will fight with weapons.

A good Nazi is one remembered in history as the discarded husk of our disgraceful mistakes gone by, long since eroded to dust. That starts not just with brute force, but by confounding their efforts in sheer fucking spite.

Join with us now to do just that.

  37. The #Vulpibus folks have had to get moving again. They really need all the #moneyhelp you can give them with #fuel and #food.

The good news is they have been making fast progress across unfriendly states and also a bit more progress on the Vulpibus itself and on the gene editing system design. The bad news is that progress could stall without your help.

  38. A little farm and garden update for the homies:

One of my favorite things about the #farm is that every day is pretty much a different experiment.

The mason jar filled with flowers is my attempt at making lilac oil using the #enfleurage technique. After steeping for a few weeks, it should be ready to go.

The meat photo? #capicolla! It's going to be vacuum sealed for a week, and then it shall go hang in my cellar with the #bresaola I've had hanging for two weeks now.

And the garden-- I've got everything in this photo planted except those buckets along the back wall. I'm building a raised bed for watermelons back there, but right now the buckets are back there as storage because I don't know what I'm going to use them for (or plant in them) yet. They'll probably end up going between the back fence and the big bed in the middle. If you have any ideas, let me know!

The next step aside from the watermelon bed is to finish laying cardboard out to kill weeds, and then cover it with wood chips and level everything, so it doesn't look, well, like it does in the photo.

Also, if you havent figured it out yet... I'm in my cottage core era now.
