Cutting corners.

Laid the skirt over the muddy bit, which is now walkable 😆

Then dug out the huge area for the extended corner skirt. Last time I did this first and that was a mistake because the huge hole was very much in the way, so this time I did everything else first, then dug the corner. Experience!

Hoping to fill the trench back in today. The corner skirting goes slow as there's a lot of cutting and two-way grading.

Some black crud goes over the joints where I've trimmed the glue. Where its not trimmed it has a waterproof skin.

Also had to carefully dig out the adjoining piece from the previous section. I had a board there to protect it but that didn't work too well.

Waited half a day for the mud to dry out a little and then squished around in it to drill a bunch more holes into the rocks, installed rebar, an end piece so the concrete doesn't run out and then the vertical part of the insulation, which are always a bit tricky to align.

In this section there were a lot of protruding rocks to be insulated around.

Then the extended footing on the bottom and the sun went down again.

Horizontal part tomorrow, I hope!

Since that's no good, I've been doing some other jobs this morning and hoping for it to dry a bit.

Under the old harrow I hauled away were several small Linden saplings. I dug them up and replanted them by the forest edge near the spring. Planting trees brightens the mood.

Then hauled some more junk up from the valley shack, including parts of this tiny hut that fell down. I found a message, someone had written "pasaku namelis" (little fairy house) on the inside above the door. Curious. Always wondered what that thing was for. Fairies, apparently. They seem to have moved out a while ago.

Haven't had treasure in a while but today I was hiding from rain showers and had time to rummage in a yet unexplored place.

Look what an amazing wonder healing device I've found! From Switzerland (doubt it). Wait, it's actually just a regular old incandescent light bulb in a sci-fi shaped plastic handle. What a scam.

Next another locker full of old clothes, handbags, etc. I'll sort these in winter. The flannel shirts might get used.

And in the drawer below, a Scottish bear, far from home. Quite dirty and the mice had a nibble but didn't like his stuffing. I think his name might be Haggis. He's even got bagpipes.

Also Pik-Nik the weird processed cheese guy. Both in need of a wash.

A spell of sunshine before the next rain front hits.

The young storks are facing it with glee. Each front arrived today with strong gusts of wind that blew stuff around the yard and let the juveniles hover above the nest and practice flying without the risk of leaving and being unable to return.

Although at this point I think they're just being big chickens. One was several meters above the nest before dropping back down. You're basically flying already, mate! Get out there.

Flight school. Our young storks still do not dare leave their nest for the first time, but they've advanced to hovering.

The other two siblings have to keep their heads down because there is only one helipad and its also where everybody eats their food delivery and sleeps.

At least they've soon learnt how to poop over the side. Should really move the compost heap under there for all this free phosphorus.

Meanwhile the parents are either out collecting food or perching on a nearby chimney or hay bale.

We've gotten used to the *whomp* when they take off from or land on our chimney hood at night.

The three young storks appreciate every breeze. They can't leave the nest yet but must practice flying somehow. If there's enough airflow over their wings, they can take turns standing up in the nest and getting a feel for it. In a stronger breeze they jump up and hover above the nest for a few seconds before landing back in it, more or less well.

Soon they should be able to take their first real flight.

The parents are meanwhile sitting on our chimney watching the progress of their offspring.

Baby storks are sticking their heads up now and throwing their necks back to make little clap-clap sounds with their beaks.

There's three little ones, same as last year. Hope they all make it this year too!

Now is the critical phase where they cannot fly yet and leaving the nest means certain death. The parents must find and deliver enough food so these can grow to full size birds that can survive the long migration to the southern hemisphere.

Storks prefer to hunt in short vegetation where they can see prey, aren't surprised by predators and tall vegetation doesn't hinder take-off.

They're attracted to the sound of mowers and tractors and will hunt near them, which is impressive when such a big bird swoops over your head.

Counted three baby storks today. It was a warm day with good thermals, so other storks were soaring high in the sky. One descended and took a few swoops at our nest but was chased off by one of our adult storks.

This is a regular occurence on warm days where the sun heating up the fields produces updrafts that the clever birds use to ascend without expending energy.

That's how they can migrate so far and why they avoid crossing oceans (they cross only at the narrow straits of Gibraltar and the Bosporus).

Stork is keeping an eye on the situation in the eastern skies.

There's two hatchlings in the nest now and when its quiet we can hear them gently clapping with their little beaks.

The rain finally came and lots of it.

Last night a thunderstorm passed through and dumped a full barrel of rainwater in two minutes, today it's a more steady series of showers.

Good for our garden! The storks are not so happy and were seen tossing wet grass clumps out of their nest.

We thought they were sitting on an egg already, but apparently not.

There's plenty of starlings but hardly any sparrows this spring, the little birds stayed for the winter and that did apparently not work out too well for them this time.

Wife arrive! Or uh, partner. Whatever.

I think they're both the same storks as last year. Because they are totally used to my bullshit. And last year that took some time and suspicious eyeballing first.

The shagging has begun immediately. There's no foreplay, the whole thing lasts about 5 seconds but goes on many times per day, accompanied by slow beak clacking. Then several minutes of intense preening to straighten the feathers.

Mr. Stork looks a bit grumpy on account of the rain. He hates wet feathers. Makes him look all spiky. Only beaks should look spiky, you see.

They're gone.

The young storks moved out a while ago and joined the first timer flock to the south. They need to go earlier, as the first migration is the hardest.

The parents stayed a little longer, enjoying their regained freedom and then left as well.

Our storks are most likely heading for the eastern route around the Mediterranean, across the Bosporus and the Suez canal.

These three youngsters still haven't flown, although when it's windy they stand up, spread their wings and jump up in the nest, hovering for a second before dropping back down.

Their flight feathers look fully developed now, so maybe they just need to find their confidence.

My rabbit colony 🐇 this we be their first winter outside of cages. I raise them without cages and pasture raise the litters. Got to get them settled in their winter housing before I get the winter breed started.
