Cutting corners.
Laid the skirt over the muddy bit, which is now walkable 😆
Then dug out the huge area for the extended corner skirt. Last time I did this first and that was a mistake because the huge hole was very much in the way, so this time I did everything else first, then dug the corner. Experience!
Hoping to fill the trench back in today. The corner skirting goes slow as there's a lot of cutting and two-way grading.
Some black crud goes over the joints where I've trimmed the glue. Where its not trimmed it has a waterproof skin.
Also had to carefully dig out the adjoining piece from the previous section. I had a board there to protect it but that didn't work too well.

Waited half a day for the mud to dry out a little and then squished around in it to drill a bunch more holes into the rocks, installed rebar, an end piece so the concrete doesn't run out and then the vertical part of the insulation, which are always a bit tricky to align.
In this section there were a lot of protruding rocks to be insulated around.
Then the extended footing on the bottom and the sun went down again.
Horizontal part tomorrow, I hope!

Since that's no good, I've been doing some other jobs this morning and hoping for it to dry a bit.
Under the old harrow I hauled away were several small Linden saplings. I dug them up and replanted them by the forest edge near the spring. Planting trees brightens the mood.
Then hauled some more junk up from the valley shack, including parts of this tiny hut that fell down. I found a message, someone had written "pasaku namelis" (little fairy house) on the inside above the door. Curious. Always wondered what that thing was for. Fairies, apparently. They seem to have moved out a while ago.

Another thing that was in the crooked shack (the one with the useful beams) was this pile of dried bundles of reeds.
No idea what these were collected for here. Don't think I've seen many thatched roofs around. No, I don't want to build one either.
What to do with this? Someone spent a lot of effort gathering and bundling them.

Back to foundation work. Guide string and depth gauge out and hacked away the clay to the right level. That last bit is always manual work.
Pulled out the grounding rod for the old phone line, which was pounded in deep along the foundation.
Then some rock drilling and hammering anchors for connecting rock and concrete and I even got the long glass rebar pieces in before it got too dark.
Finally threw some improvised cover over the hole as tomorrows forecast is for heavy rain and I don't need to wade around in a mud pit the day after.
Oh, those Colorado spruces I felled because they were too close? Found their roots. Under the foundation rocks. So they did indeed have to go.

Picked the #blackberries from my driveway, the #figs from behind the house, and the #apples from the nearby public fountain.

Beans did great this year, we ate loads, froze some and they just kept coming.
Peas are done, we let some dry for seeds and tore out the plants and supports.
The last two surviving sweetcorn cobs were the largest and so got plucked and peeled to dry for seeds.
Also got seeds from the two tobacco plants that popped up randomly after we dug over the former greenhouse for the first time. Nobody here smokes, but I'm kinda curious to experiment with them.
Cucumbers are done too.
Even managed to save a few hazelnuts from the mad squirrels this year.
Just pumpkins, sunflowers and apples left now. And the apples are pretty sour still. Not enough sun. Endless rain.

I strained it through a cloth to catch all solid bits (#walnuts) while letting the #alcohol part through. Result: 1.5L of pure #homemade #nocino
Not satisfied, I decided to experiment some more by mixing 1L of milk to .5L of pure #liqueur to make nocino #cream.
Pure liqueur -> root cellar
Cream -> freezer -

Because it is very much in the way of progress, I've been attacking the next scrap metal pile.
This included a bunch of thick sheet steel and the old man's harrow.
Also these two weirdly shaped round covers made of thin galvanized steel. With a hole in the middle. Anyone know what they are for?
The harrow has only scrap value, there are loads of these around and nobody wants them because they are small and bent and broken and the guys that still use them anyways already have one.
I took the tines off first, those are good spring steel. The frame isn't really worth keeping even if I had a cat 2 tractor.
Looks like we've accumulated another trailer load of metals to cash in at the scrap dealer.

Courier with this new 3m pole saw arrived yesterday just in time to clear that oak branch out of my way.
I have a manual pole saw, ok for fruit trees, but it wouldn't cut a thick oak branch at maximum height and an awkward angle. I tried.
This thing did the whole job in seconds. It is quite top-heavy as the motor is on the head and the pole is more bendy than I'd like, but it sure cuts fast. Cleared a whole bunch more branches from several trees near the barn roof and it really saves time.
Could have more reach, but with the heavy head it would not be manageable.

From what I've seen, all of them are butternut squash, none Hokkaido. I think we'll have enough to open a roadside stall or something :)

Fun pruning fact: Petrol pole saws can be significantly longer than electric ones, because with electric ones the motor is at the top and with petrol ones at the bottom, transferring power up the pole with a shaft.
Even a small electric motor on a long arm is too heavy to make them much longer than 3m (even then they get really hard to lift and position, I tried).
I've not found any electric ones with the motor at the bottom.

Ohh, a hot air balloon firing its burner.
Drifted low over our meadow, burning hard to avoid hitting the powerline and then landed somewhere nearby.
Saw a car with special balloon trailer zooming around to pick it up, trying to predict where it would land.

As it is tradition for this time of year, though a bit early due to the hot spring making the walnuts mature faster, I am making Nocino (walnut liqueur) with the walnuts from my land. This is my first time trying, and I chose to follow the recipe attributed to the city of Modena.
Too bad it'll have to sit there until after Christmas, though I will probably at least give a taste test during those festivities.

Almost ready for testing. The critical part was a method of quickly attaching and removing the hitch.
I've changed from my original idea with the hooks a bit and made two welded bolt adapters that remain on the frame. The rod at the top gets seated in the grass collector bag arms, then is swung down for the tangs on the frame to meet the bolt adapters and secured with two wingnuts.
It's quite sturdy, I've stood on it to test 😁
As usual, all made from scrap metal found around the farm.

Cable recycling. Sorted into aluminium cable scrap, copper cable scrap and a few to keep.
Also a short length of something super rare: lead shielded cable. I remember finding that wrapped around an apple tree 😆
As soon I was done I found another pile of cables somewhere else 🤦♂️

This thing has impressed me with how much it can handle. They are designed for a poncy lawn that gets aerated and fertilized, but it handles shredding small branches, chewing a path through a meadow, clearing an overgrown goat pen (minus the shrubs) and even driving up the really steep forest road, although only when its not too wet and slippery.
It also mowed steel, rocks, concrete chunks, molehills, bricks and small stumps hiding in the grass with nothing more than some dents in the blades.
The weak point is the collector chute which blocks up when the grass is too moist or thick or a twig gets stuck sideways. Can still mulch without collection then.
