Cutting corners.
Laid the skirt over the muddy bit, which is now walkable 😆
Then dug out the huge area for the extended corner skirt. Last time I did this first and that was a mistake because the huge hole was very much in the way, so this time I did everything else first, then dug the corner. Experience!
Hoping to fill the trench back in today. The corner skirting goes slow as there's a lot of cutting and two-way grading.
Some black crud goes over the joints where I've trimmed the glue. Where its not trimmed it has a waterproof skin.
Also had to carefully dig out the adjoining piece from the previous section. I had a board there to protect it but that didn't work too well.

Waited half a day for the mud to dry out a little and then squished around in it to drill a bunch more holes into the rocks, installed rebar, an end piece so the concrete doesn't run out and then the vertical part of the insulation, which are always a bit tricky to align.
In this section there were a lot of protruding rocks to be insulated around.
Then the extended footing on the bottom and the sun went down again.
Horizontal part tomorrow, I hope!

Since that's no good, I've been doing some other jobs this morning and hoping for it to dry a bit.
Under the old harrow I hauled away were several small Linden saplings. I dug them up and replanted them by the forest edge near the spring. Planting trees brightens the mood.
Then hauled some more junk up from the valley shack, including parts of this tiny hut that fell down. I found a message, someone had written "pasaku namelis" (little fairy house) on the inside above the door. Curious. Always wondered what that thing was for. Fairies, apparently. They seem to have moved out a while ago.

Well, that cover sure kept the rain out of the trench and it didn't get muddy at all 😬

#ducks in the water!
#Michigan is on one of the largest waterfowl flyways in the world! The #GreatLakes bay contains the largest freshwater wetland in the United States
Thats why we chose our ducks, cold hardy and ready for water. 💧 Our #homestead is raising waterfowl chosen for its local resilience. We spend less #energy on heating, #water for gardening ((((just south of the #land of lakes ))))) #permaculture #RegenAg #solarpunk #ducklings #summer #bigwater

Still very happy with my DIY pallet forks made from rusty fence posts that I pulled out of the ground.
I've hauled a few heavy things with them meanwhile and nothing broke, so I guess I can put a "SWL 500 kg" sticker on there. That's as much as the tractor can lift, although without a counterweight the front wheels go up 🤣

A Day in the Life at Duffney’s Bird Barn
How I balance a remote career, homesteading, crochet, writing, and motherhood—one day at a time. People often ask me how I find time to do everything. Honestly... Some days I wonder the same thing. The weeds don't always get pulled. The laundry doesn't always get folded. The dishes aren't always done when I want them to be. Some crochet projects take longer than I planned, and there are days when my to-do list is still staring back at me when it's time for bed. I've learned that's […]https://duffneysbirdbarn.wordpress.com/2026/07/13/a-day-in-the-life-at-duffneys-bird-barn/

Phew, got the barn tidied up again just in time.
Also found out the exact lifting capacity of our Iseki's three point hitch - 500 kg. With a bit of OSB on top of the cement bags and the weight of the pallet forks (and pallet) I had to use brake steering as the front wheels were lifting and the rear hydraulics hitting relief pressure. Well designed balance! :)
My scrapmetal #PalletFork handled it fine and I got everything inside before the next rain front hit.

Rugged phone owner tip: If your USB-C port doesn't work anymore, maybe the port isn't really broken and you just need to clean the mud out of it occasionally so the plug can go in all the way again 😆
-
#PalletFork also suitable for beehive relocation 😁
No bees in there, so nobody got bothered (them or me).
These two hives are somewhat intact, or at least one. Might be worth saving as I have a ton of frames for them in the beekeeping shed (and even more in the attic). Needs cleanout and some repairing though.
For now I just parked them by the fence so I can clear out the junk underneath.
-
Have I already mentioned how useful and back-saving my new #PalletFork is? 😸
Yard cleanup goes so much faster now.
-
Pallet pickup practice.
-
First load test successful. Got a "trunk" full of firewood to the house. Should probably improve the mounting system somewhat 😆
-
Homemade scrapmetal #Palletfork complete. Seems I got the measurements right, picks up and drops pallets from the ground perfectly. Either length- or sideways.
Very pleased. This will be so useful for hauling stuff around the farm.
Slight limitation in how high I can lift them, but it's sufficient. Might modify it if the need for more height arises, but it's a yard hauler, not a forklift.
Now I just need to get more pallets 😁

The homemade #PalletFork is starting to look like money. These sell for €300 to €500 if you buy one instead of welding it from scrap steel found around the farm.
Let's see what this cost us (rough numbers):
€11 fittings
€26 paint (only used half though)
€5 power
€12 fluxcore wire
€3 cutting/grinding wheels etc.
====
€57Bargain! And it was more fun than buying. And much more satisfying 🤩
This paint dries slowly. One more coat, hopefully tomorrow.

Progress on the #PalletFork
Working with reclaimed steel is a lot slower. I was cleaning up rust and dirt, welding shut some holes where the fence wire used to go through and painting rust converter on where it would be difficult later.
After much measuring and aligning, I cut the frame and tack-welded it together.
Then a filler plate into the top.
In between, some angle grinder repair (broken wire) and of course the fluxcore reel ran out and needed swapping.

The #Vulpibus folks are now just past the halfway point of their journey, which is only possible thanks to your #fedihelp #mutualaid!
But to get all the way there #gtfomystate, hundreds of dollars are still needed for the cost of fuel and food in this capitalist nightmare, and a few hundred more for preventing their car from being towed away for non payment of loans and insurance.
Let's call the goal $1000 over this next few days. This will help with a couple of maintenance things too hopefully.
Progress was made this last few days on the #electrical breaker box, on sewing of a lovely cloak for Inara, and on the gene editing system ( https://gitlab.vulpinedesigns.com and be sure to familiarise yourself with Qt Creator if you want to see the concepts being laid out first paw).
You are all amazing people living in this same messed up world as us. You know what you can and cannot manage to do. Be strong. Be loved. Receive the tolerance you give.

#Freestuff along the route always appreciated and considered.
One thing currently on the to get list is a clothes washing machine, preferably front load as a single or small unit sized combo machine with tumble dryer.
Another is a countertop sized dishwasher.
And a three quarters height, narrow width fridge-freezer.
If you have any of these spare in IA, NE or CO in working or easy-repair condition, please let us know.
---
When the bus reaches its destination, a commune is to be established with its own off grid systems and food growing. The lab is to be expanded. We intend to help people escape and learn and transform into what they truly want to be.
When I say we, I mean a broad loose-knit network of agents across the world who are a decentralised, unstoppable force for good. The Vulpibus is a catalyst and a tool, the people know how to use it.
Atha is to me a being with great potential focussing on survival when hir real impact should be felt from hir work on gene editing tools for freedom of form.
I fight for hir and everyone to get a fair chance at making that happen. I fight with nice words, sharp words and blunt words, and if needed I will fight with weapons.
A good Nazi is one remembered in history as the discarded husk of our disgraceful mistakes gone by, long since eroded to dust. That starts not just with brute force, but by confounding their efforts in sheer fucking spite.
Join with us now to do just that.

One other big chore we got done this weekend was to jar up half the honey I have for sale. My gods what a sticky mess getting it strained and into the jars. The floor was adhesive. I can see why even small beekeepers end up buying expensive bottling equipment. Yeesh. But so, so satisfying to see the gorgeous jars all lined up with the bubbles settling out. Every teaspoon a precious drop. The whole area here this year made darker honey than the most recent years. No idea what the wee girls were getting as we had a very rainy spring and there must have been different things blooming. The honey tastes more flowery this year, too.
