  2. Cutting corners.

Laid the skirt over the muddy bit, which is now walkable 😆

Then dug out the huge area for the extended corner skirt. Last time I did this first and that was a mistake because the huge hole was very much in the way, so this time I did everything else first, then dug the corner. Experience!

Hoping to fill the trench back in today. The corner skirting goes slow as there's a lot of cutting and two-way grading.

Some black crud goes over the joints where I've trimmed the glue. Where its not trimmed it has a waterproof skin.

Also had to carefully dig out the adjoining piece from the previous section. I had a board there to protect it but that didn't work too well.

  12. Waited half a day for the mud to dry out a little and then squished around in it to drill a bunch more holes into the rocks, installed rebar, an end piece so the concrete doesn't run out and then the vertical part of the insulation, which are always a bit tricky to align.

In this section there were a lot of protruding rocks to be insulated around.

Then the extended footing on the bottom and the sun went down again.

    Horizontal part tomorrow, I hope!

  17. Since that's no good, I've been doing some other jobs this morning and hoping for it to dry a bit.

Under the old harrow I hauled away were several small Linden saplings. I dug them up and replanted them by the forest edge near the spring. Planting trees brightens the mood.

Then hauled some more junk up from the valley shack, including parts of this tiny hut that fell down. I found a message, someone had written "pasaku namelis" (little fairy house) on the inside above the door. Curious. Always wondered what that thing was for. Fairies, apparently. They seem to have moved out a while ago.

  27. How do you even store these massive, writhing steel snakes? They don't like to bend. And they're heavy. I can barely drag this one around and its a short length.

  29. Crap weather, but I can do little jobs here and there between the rain showers.

Pulled out the corn plants, which made a big pile on top of the already large compost. By the size of that compost mountain, we managed a lot more gardening this year than last! 😅

Found a few small cobs, although they are probably not sweet anymore. Still can boil and eat them.

Also doing some winter preparation around the place, like laying these concrete slabs I found in various places to make a less muddy path to the sauna. The mole loves to dig here and buried most of the wood chips that were there.

  30. Beans did great this year, we ate loads, froze some and they just kept coming.

Peas are done, we let some dry for seeds and tore out the plants and supports.

The last two surviving sweetcorn cobs were the largest and so got plucked and peeled to dry for seeds.

Also got seeds from the two tobacco plants that popped up randomly after we dug over the former greenhouse for the first time. Nobody here smokes, but I'm kinda curious to experiment with them.

    Cucumbers are done too.

Even managed to save a few hazelnuts from the mad squirrels this year.

Just pumpkins, sunflowers and apples left now. And the apples are pretty sour still. Not enough sun. Endless rain.

  31. Was walking around during the storm, checking for damage, careful to stay upwind of trees and barn roofs. Someone in the area did get hit by a falling tree, knocked into their own pond and drowned.

As you can see by those two young birches on the right bending , it was pretty windy. I've no data on this but would say gusts were around 55 knots in places, maybe more.

Bunch of alders fell over in the forest and a pine got damaged. I've cleared the forest road already. Lots of firewood.

The oaks were waving their branches around furiously but stood strong. Oaks like to keep dead branches and throw them during such winds, which I gathered for the sauna.

The barn roof tiles crashed near my scrap metal collection and had to be picked out for disposal.

  36. #ducks in the water!

#Michigan is on one of the largest waterfowl flyways in the world! The #GreatLakes bay contains the largest freshwater wetland in the United States

Thats why we chose our ducks, cold hardy and ready for water. 💧 Our #homestead is raising waterfowl chosen for its local resilience. We spend less #energy on heating, #water for gardening ((((just south of the #land of lakes ))))) #permaculture #RegenAg #solarpunk #ducklings #summer #bigwater

  37. Mower front tyre getting another patch. After the last patch it had a slow leak. Usable but annoying to pump up every two weeks. Turns out the leak was on my patch, so its patch upon patch now. We'll see how that does.

The rear tyre patch worked perfectly, to my surprise, as I simply poked a slice of rubber from an ancient inner tube through the hole with some vulcanizing goop. Zero leakage there.

  38. A Day in the Life at Duffney’s Bird Barn

How I balance a remote career, homesteading, crochet, writing, and motherhood—one day at a time. People often ask me how I find time to do everything. Honestly... Some days I wonder the same thing. The weeds don't always get pulled. The laundry doesn't always get folded. The dishes aren't always done when I want them to be. Some crochet projects take longer than I planned, and there are days when my to-do list is still staring back at me when it's time for bed. I've learned that's […]
