I've got a feeling it's going to be a crazy fruit season 😆
Last year we had a late frost kill almost everything, but it looks like we made it past that this time. Everything is thick with flowers and abuzz with pollinators.

This just came (three days from a warehouse in Poland), so the money saved by making my own thumb got immediately reinvested 😆
It's bigger, heavier and louder than expected, but it cuts steel like butter.
Should make the next project much faster and my cuts more precise. And I don't need to use my mildly sketchy angle grinder tube cutting rig anymore.

Thumb test drive.
Works great! Picks up logs and concrete beams and even delicate stuff such as steel beams. I'm well pleased with the result 😸
The huge concrete beam weighs somewhere beyond 8 tons and is too heavy for our little digger, but it can grip it and drag it around. The thumb and fangs easily withstand the full force of the bucket curl cylinder.

Thumb ready. Finished making the pins and adjuster holes.
Didn't weld tubes inside the other holes. We'll see how they hold up. If they do oval out I can still do that, for the ones I use a lot.
I see now why nobody sells adjustable thumbs. This was a lot of extra work that would make it too expensive. Only DIYers get to have it :)
Only primer on there yet, still need to paint it but only have orange, blue and green available, none of which match well here.

Thumb is getting there. Cut off the corners, flipped them around and welded them back on as reinforcements, now the whole thing looks more streamlined. I think it'll be strong enough without doubling up the thickness near the fangs.
If they break I'll do it :)
Also made two pins out of three. This is the dullest job in the world, drilling a 8mm hole through 25mm solid rod, but the pins I bought weren't long enough after some design tweaks. At least it's not stainless steel!

Short break in the rain. Well timed, started pouring again as soon as we got back inside.
Tomorrow promises to be better again. Good, there's so much to do!

Teeth! Got some spare teeth for a spring-tooth harrow. So in theory they should be pretty durable.
Special challenge: Cutting curves with an angle grinder 😆
My tack welds did not withstand hydraulic gripping power and the teeth flew off at the first test, so I welded them on properly to try picking up a small concrete beam.
Clearly when its done I will need some practice with this new thumb as I picked up way too much soil with the beam. The thumb works though 🥳
Bunch more detail work to do, make holes for the other adjustment points, finish the pins, cut excess material off the sides and weld reinforcement pieces for the fangs. Maybe some serrated "back teeth".

Finally could resume work on the thumb after an unexpected shortage of welding wire. 😳
First job was to add in the connecting pieces between the two sides. A thick piece of flat bar at the top to leave space for the support leg when extended. And a box section to handle shear forces near the tips when grabbing an asymmetricl item such as a rock.
Wire brushed and finish welded the body of the thumb without distorting it too much.
Then I started on the adjustment holes for the sliding support leg. Welded in a reinforcement tube, which is a lot of work. It'll be a lot more holes to saw for the other adjustment points later. Perhaps I overdesigned it a little, but hopefully I'll get some use out of the adjustability.

Made a thing I saw some Youtuber use. Its as useful as it looked, and easy to make.
Couple bits cut off a rusty rod, cleaned up and welded together as letter "h" and voila, a webbing winder for use with a battery drill.
Instead of a tangled mess in a bucket, I've got my cargo straps ready for next use in record time. Should also work with the firehose, but I haven't tried that yet.
If you're making one, two tips:
1. The short leg should be terminating before the long leg reaches the bottom so it can be used against a flat surface. About 5-10mm shorter.
2. The legs should be slightly narrower at the bottom than at the top, to make it easy pulling the tool out of a tight roll when done.

Pumped up the slow leaking tyres (two now - price to pay for all this scrapmetal I find), fired up the mownster and zoomed through the garden to redistribute some grass.
Had a sunny day after a lot of rain so the stuff grows like crazy.
Two piles around some replanted bushes, a couple raked over some bare spots and the rest for the compost mountain, which has been fed with mostly woodchips and grass cuttings last year and produced plenty of compost from that.

Two more mystery tools.
Actually we already identified the "S" one because @vaviurka knew it from her childhood in the village. But you can guess anyways :)
The right one I have no clue, other than its homemade and was important enough to have two of them.

Repacked the fertilizer and stuck the old labels on as far as there were any. Most are general NPK ones which we can just use up in the garden.
Also a pot of salt for some reason. And some leftover herbicide which I've got no use for. Oh, and a jar full of rendered lard that has gone rancid years ago. Not sure what to do with those.
Then there were two open sacks of white powder with no label. Extremely light and fluffy. Since the mice gnawed plenty of holes into the sacks, the yard now looks like Elon's couch table. I guess it's fertilizer so maybe the grass will grow extra fast (it does anyways).
That's this section cleared out, except what do I do with all this ancient hay? Don't need that much mulching right now.

Drizzly day, so I found some barn work. Tidying up the gardening tools and other junk.
These are just the usable ones, there's another pile that size in need of repair, mostly broken/wobbling handles. Half of those are pitchforks 😆
There's a bunch of sacks with chewed open bags of various fertilizers, salt and other chemicals, some of them with still readable labels. Luckily only small quantities.
Also a few mystery tools, like that massive thick steel bar. No idea what's that for. I've used it for making grooves to put seeds in :)
