  7. New at bl.ag online, ‘Scrollway to Heaven: A Rewarding Return for Mark Oatis’, telling the story of the homecoming of a beautiful piece of carved scrolls.

  8. With both buckets in place, I can add the top layers. Two layers of pallet planks to have the required width. Used the borrowed jigsaw again, the measurements were a bit exhausting and I messed up one piece which was super stupid because I was running out of planks. But I made it with the last full size plank 💪 Really loving this

  10. Je sais... Idéalement, il ne faudrait pas utiliser Youtube... Mais parfois, on trouve des pépites comme ça :

Quel atelier ! Quels beaux outils actionnés par le pied ! :blobaww:

  11. I'm doing a summer camp at the college for middle/high schoolers. Planning to fabricate some mini trebuchet kits they can assemble (to launch ping pong balls) and then make a "big" one we can wheel outside afterwards for fun. Working on little prototypes currently.

Does anyone have any good resources on trebuchet specs?

  12. Oh yeah, the panel glue up turned out nicely. It's a shame that this will get a stain finish ("customer's wishes and he will be committing the heinous act). Its not book matched but I like how the grain flows between the panels (looks better without the blue shop lights as well).

  13. I think I like woodworking because it's basically just problem solving over and over. In fact there's very little cutting compared to everything else (and also because I'm very slow at it). The alt text describes what's happening in each step (always open to suggestions).
I've pre sanded everything but it'll get a final sand and some roundovers on the top (which is nerve racking as a last point of potential screw up after all this effort).

  14. While chopping mortises on the other one last night the whole piece split in half. I glued it back together and am finishing the mortises now, but I’m nervous. This has never happened to me before! #woodworking

  15. Wife enjoying one of the Netflix live shows in Los Angeles so spending some time this evening making progress on the second bedside table. The first one is much simpler than the second one so I may not complete the second tomorrow. #woodworking

  16. Made a little bedside table today. The other one for the other bunk is in progress #woodworking

  17. Wasted many hours today trying to cut a perfect 45 degree miter using various hand tool implements. Concluded that my next project is a donkey’s ear shooting jig. “Spend time cutting scrap wood just for practice” is underrated. #WoodWorking #handtools

  18. Need some staining/protection #woodworking help.

I have some plywood (aspen maybe?) that I’m fashioning into some shelving. I want to protect with what I know as “mineral oils” i.e. the colour of the wood when it is slightly moistened.

It’s going to be in the bedroom if that matters.

On Rona website I see SamaN butcher block oil. $16 for 500ml. Benefit is I can also resurface my cutting boards. (1/2)

  19. At that point, I only had a mostly theoretical understanding of #woodworking (earned through days of watching YouTube videos) and some limited experience with working with my CNC. The idea was that I'm going to screw up my first instrument anyway, so I settled for an electric baritone #ukulele instead of a full-scale guitar to save material and reduce some complexity (Spoiler: Little did I know that the non-standard nature of the instrument rather raised the difficulty quite a bit).

Why a baritone ukulele? I find the fretboard of a regular ukulele a bit too crammed and tiny to play comfortably, so a longer scale length should also improve things a bit. Also, standard tuning of a baritone ukulele is identical to the four high strings of a standard guitar tuning.

  20. I am so #excited about my shed.

Stage 1 renovation complete, and now a decision regarding the procurement of a fine maple #woodworking bench.

One step closer to having a workshop where I can loose myself #rediscovering a #hobby that my father taught me to love as a child and which, at last, I can pick up again.

  21. More work from my Final Major Project at Arts University Plymouth. These mesmerising pieces are made up of meticulously inlaid veneers of wood that are inserted into laser engraved plywood.

Each artwork was initially digitally drawn up by me over many many hours which then were transferred into a usable format to be laser engraved - which took another 5 and a half hours!

The work is greatly inspired by computer scientist/mathematician Craig S Kaplan (@csk) and his generative zellij work. My work displays that the algorithmic potential of Islamic Geometric Patterns and the time-tested traditions of woodcrafts can belong together in an artistic context.
