In all seriousness, there are a number of very critical safety protocols for extremely dangerous machinery (dismemberment, death, and all that) being violated in just this single thumbnail.
Upon second review, tiny tank tops and short shorts are the weirdest woodworking gear I've ever seen publicized. WTF

Edit: If you come in here and try to tell me some trolling bullshit when I'm talking about critical safety, you will be blocked. Don't tell me you're a woodworker and then try to pull that bullshit. We don't think it's cute to let anyone get injured at all.

* I need to seriously consider when I should use tiny brass screws (maybe never?)
* hand cutting a French cleat is a hassle. There must be a better way.
* piece is a little out of square. Normally I am ok with square enough but it made the door and other parts harder.
* got paste wax inside the piece. Looks sloppy.
* painting rough boards sucks. Should have used a bristle brush instead of a foam brush.

I wanted to write an article about this tonight but some technology got in the way. Some initial critiques before I go to sleep:
* I should have planned better for the location. I need to do modifications to make it fit.
* I wish I’d used real glass instead of plexiglass
* I wish I’d installed the glass the traditional way instead of coming up with my own (worse) way
* there must be some door tricks I’m missing. Hinges plus inset door seems impossible to get right.

The legs are done! Well... three sides of the legs look the same, like the left one. No, they're done! This right one will definitely be the back outside. Love it when the pieces pick where they need to be instead of me having to make a choice.
Onto the bowtie on the bottom. Well... I have to redo it entirely because I reasoned through the grain orientation wrong. I aligned the grain of the maple bowtie when I needed to make it perpendicular to that of the walnut so during wood expansion it expands the other way and prevents the crack from growing.
(╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻It's for the best, this was a bad fit but not the worst given that it was my first time doing inlay. I'll make a bigger bow tie tomorrow to cover it all. It'll be an absolute unit.

Sadly cannot attach it to the wall because I discovered I do not have the appropriate masonry bit for the French cleat. Oh well #woodworking

I hate sharpening. I managed to sharpen 3 chisels and my plane iron in about 6 hours.
I need a better way to do this. I have water stones (220/800 and 4000/8000). They are messy, need constant flattening, and the edges of the wider blades take forever.
How does everyone else do this?

I collected this thread into a slightly more cohesive Handworks 2026 blog post.
Second day at Handworks 2026 in Amana, Iowa, USA. I bought some tools yesterday from some amazingly talented makers. It is extremely hot and humid (feels like 95F/35C). But cool to see a lot of folks here for the love of the game.

@freecad I am designing and building a new enclosure for my 3D printer. I finished the main part already, but another door is still missing. So today I added my acrylic glass parts to the FreeCAD model to think about the second door.
Since this always feels like a rabbithole to me, I created a model of my room, the shelf next to the enclosure, a Eurobox to sit below and the Anycubic Vyper 3D printer.

Hi! I'm Chris! I write code, I make things, and I parent.
My posts are generally about a few key areas: #Programming, #HamRadio, #TTRPG and #Parenting.
As far as programming, I mostly focus on #DotNet #CSharp professionally, with a smattering of #WebDev using #TypeScript. For my "not professional" development, I do a lot of #GameDev in #Godot (usually using C#, though not always!), and I adore #FunctionalProgramming, particularly in #FSharp, but also in many other languages! I stream software and game development on Twitch at https://twitch.tv/b4ux1t3. The schedule on there is not currently correct (January 2025), but should be soon.
When it comes to ham radio, I mostly focus on #DigitalModes, though I do a little bit of #POTA and #SOTA (well, I want to, anyway!). I'm a big user of #APRS and #PacketRadio. I try to be active on #YSF via the inimitable [email protected]'s (edit: removed the mention here to prevent accidental mentions!) pride radio network, though mostly I listen. If you'd like my callsign, feel free to DM me. I do not list it publicly, but I'm not shy about handing it out in a more private setting.
Regarding TTRPG, I'm mostly a forever GM who runs #ShadowdarkRPG, #BladesInTheDark, #MorkBorg and #Mausritter, though I love most #OSR games and often mix and match rules and stuff. I don't _hate_ #DnD, #dnd5e or otherwise, it's just not the sort of thing I enjoy running. I also GM professionally on https://startplaying.games/gm/b4ux1t3!
