Hmm, seems I have discovered a new way to be parted from my money.
Some weeks ago I saw a second-hand bass guitar for sale. A couple of weeks ago I bought it. I didn't realise I needed a specific bass amp for it to work nicely.
After some research, today I went and tried different amps at the "Rockshop". Of course I walked out with a more expensive one than I planned.
While there I used one of their new basses. Now I'm home I realise mine is much harder to play nicely. After some searching it seems I should put new strings on to fix this. Maybe fix the action too. This is perhaps best done by a professional so they say. Hmm.....

Someone posted here a while back "The $30 hobby which only costs $100 to start is the best $500 you ever spend". That looks like a bargain compared with my bass-heavy rabbit hole. But I am loving making fun noises. Soon I shall be cosplaying as Tim Commerford.

Notes:

* re: foot-tapping, I'm aware there are musicians trained to either conceal it or who've perfected timing other ways -- we're nowhere near that level, so it remains to me an essential tool, along with using a metronome and playing along to recordings.

The other observation I have on this is timing & rhythm are often assumed to be either innate or absent. I don't buy that & believe they can be trained, even in adults, at least to a passable degree.

I'm hoping the notion of AI originating in hard code but needing constant training and refinement might be the thing that convinces my guitar pal to break out of the intellectual box in which I believe he's stuck.

I've not offered these thoughts to my pal just yet.

Before I do, I'd love to hear any comments or suggestions from other folks who've struggled like me with all this stuff.
