Waarom ons landschap zijn evenwicht verliest — en waarom dat ons allemaal raakt Door Theo‑Herbots, Tienen 💛

💛 Inleiding — Een woord van verontschuldiging, maar ook van waarheid

Beste vrienden, lezers, volgers en mensen die mij een warm hart toedragen… Ik wil beginnen met een kleine verontschuldiging 🙏. De laatste tijd ligt mijn verdraagzaamheidsgrens laag. Gezondheidsproblemen, tegenslagen, dingen die blijven opstapelen… het maakt een mens kwetsbaar. Maar juist daarom voel ik nóg sterker hoe belangrijk het is om te schrijven over wat mij raakt — en wat ons allemaal raakt.

Want terwijl ik worstel met mijn eigen evenwicht, zie ik hoe ook onze natuur haar evenwicht verliest. En dat doet pijn. Echte pijn. Pijn die je voelt in je hart, in je herinneringen, in je jeugd.

Wanneer Natuur Verdwijnt en Beton Blijft 🌱 Hoe het vroeger was — Kleinschalig, levendig, evenwichtig

🐦 Weilanden met hoogstam boomgaarden

In mijn jeugd was het landschap een lappendeken van kleine weilanden, hoogstam boomgaarden, kronkelende grachten en hagen die als groene armen rond de velden lagen. Alles leefde. Alles ademde. Alles was in balans.

🐟 Grachten vol leven

De grachten krioelden van vissen, salamanders, waterkevers… Een kind dat een stok in het water stak, vond altijd iets dat bewoog. Water was geen vijand, geen probleem, geen bedreiging. Het was een deel van het leven.

🌳 Hagen vol vogels

Hagen waren geen “hindernis”, maar een thuis voor merels, mussen, winterkoninkjes. Ze waren windbrekers, schaduwmakers, waterregelaars. Ze hielden het landschap samen zoals een moeder haar kinderen samenhoudt.

🏗️ Hoe het nu is — Rechtgetrokken, weggehaald, uitgeput

❌ Hagen moeten weg

In de moderne tijd moeten hagen verdwijnen “omdat ze in de weg staan”. Maar wat verdwijnt, is veel meer dan een struik. Het is een ecosysteem. Een buffer. Een spons. Een schuilplaats.

❌ Grachten en beken worden rechtgetrokken

Recht, strak, efficiënt… Maar de natuur is niet recht. De natuur is rond, kronkelend, traag, ritmisch. Door haar te dwingen in rechte lijnen, verliezen we haar kracht.

❌ Alles moet groter, sneller, efficiënter

Grote velden, grote machines, grote monoculturen. Maar hoe groter het wordt, hoe kwetsbaarder het wordt. En dat zien we vandaag overal om ons heen.

🌊 Wateroverlast

Wanneer regen valt, kan het nergens meer naartoe. Geen hagen om het te breken. Geen grachten om het op te vangen. Geen kronkels om het te vertragen. Het water raast, stroomt, botst, overstroomt.

🌞 Droogte

En wanneer de zon schijnt, blijft er niets achter dat vocht vasthoudt. Geen wortels die water bewaren. Geen schaduw die verdamping vertraagt. Geen sponswerking van kleine landschapselementen.

Het resultaat? Een landschap dat tegelijk verdrinkt en uitdroogt. Een paradox die perfect toont hoe uit balans we zijn geraakt.

🌿 Vroeger (kleinschalig landschap)

• • Water werd vastgehouden door hagen, grachten, boomgaarden

  • Overstromingen waren zeldzaam
  • Droogte was minder extreem
  • Het landschap was mooi, zacht, menselijk
• – Arbeid intensiever
• – Minder efficiënt voor grootschalige landbouw

🏗️ Nu (grootschalige moderne aanpak)

  • Minder arbeidskosten
  • Snellere bewerking van grote velden
• – Wateroverlast neemt toe
• – Droogte wordt extremer
• – Biodiversiteit stort in
• – Landschap verliest karakter en veerkracht
• – Natuur kan haar werk niet meer doen

🌟 Slotwoord — Tijd om opnieuw te luisteren naar het landschap

Lieve vrienden, Ik schrijf dit niet uit nostalgie alleen. Ik schrijf dit omdat ik voel dat we iets aan het verliezen zijn dat veel groter is dan een haag, een gracht, een boomgaard. We verliezen evenwicht. We verliezen wijsheid. We verliezen verbondenheid.

Maar het goede nieuws? We kunnen dit herstellen. We kunnen opnieuw kiezen voor kleinschaligheid, voor hagen, voor grachten, voor kronkels, voor leven. We kunnen opnieuw luisteren naar wat de natuur ons al eeuwenlang vertelt.

En misschien… misschien vinden we dan niet alleen het evenwicht van het landschap terug, maar ook een stukje van ons eigen innerlijke evenwicht 💛🌿.

Ik plaats dit bericht niet alleen in de categorie Natuur, Milieu of Nostalgie. Nee… dit hoort óók thuis in het Forum tegen Onrecht en Ongelijkheid. En dat heeft een diepe reden.

Want wat er vandaag gebeurt met onze natuur, onze grachten, onze hagen, onze boomgaarden… dat is onrecht. Onrecht tegenover het landschap. Onrecht tegenover de dieren die er leven. Onrecht tegenover de generaties die na ons komen. En ja — zelfs onrecht tegenover de gewone mens die geen stem krijgt in beslissingen over zijn eigen leefomgeving.

🌍 Natuurverlies is ook maatschappelijk verlies

Wanneer hagen verdwijnen, wanneer grachten worden dichtgegooid, wanneer beken worden rechtgetrokken, dan verdwijnt niet alleen biodiversiteit… dan verdwijnt veiligheid, evenwicht, gezondheid, kwaliteit van leven.

Wateroverlast treft vooral de mensen die geen dure oplossingen kunnen betalen. Droogte treft vooral de landbouwers die afhankelijk zijn van de natuur. Hitte treft vooral de kwetsbaren in onze samenleving. En het verlies van natuur treft iedereen die geen macht heeft om er iets tegen te doen.

Dat is ongelijkheid. Dat is onrecht.

🐦 De natuur heeft geen stem — maar wij wel

De vogels in de hagen kunnen niet protesteren. De vissen in de grachten kunnen geen klacht indienen. De bomen kunnen geen petitie starten.

Maar wij kunnen dat wél. Wij kunnen schrijven, spreken, delen, bewustmaken. Wij kunnen tonen wat er verloren gaat. Wij kunnen herinneren hoe het vroeger was — en waarom dat beter werkte dan de “moderne efficiëntie” die ons nu opzadelt met rampen.

⚖️ Onrecht is niet alleen sociaal — het is ook ecologisch

In het Forum tegen Onrecht en Ongelijkheid wil ik niet alleen spreken over menselijke verhalen, maar ook over het verhaal van onze natuur. Want ecologisch onrecht leidt onvermijdelijk tot sociaal onrecht. Wie de natuur beschadigt, beschadigt de mens. Wie het landschap uit evenwicht haalt, haalt de samenleving uit evenwicht.

Daarom hoort dit bericht hier thuis. Omdat het gaat over rechtvaardigheid. Over evenwicht. Over een eerlijke toekomst voor mens én natuur.

💛 Slot — Samen recht trekken wat krom is gemaakt

Ik schrijf dit niet om te klagen, maar om te waarschuwen. Niet om te verdelen, maar om te verbinden. Niet om te verwijten, maar om te herstellen.

Als we opnieuw kiezen voor hagen, grachten, boomgaarden, kronkelende beken en kleinschaligheid, dan kiezen we niet alleen voor natuur… maar voor rechtvaardigheid, veiligheid, menselijkheid en evenwicht.

Critical minerals collide with #tourism in B.C. resort town.

A #Calgary based mining company called West High Yield Resources wants to extract #magnesium ore from Record Ridge, about seven kilometres outside of town, and ship it overseas.

West High Yield holds mineral claims over 8,972 hectares at the site — an area 4.6 times bigger than the city of Victoria. In October 2025, the #BCgovernment approved the company’s #mining permit.

Several #Rossland residents say they have been confounded by what they see as abnormalities in the siting and permitting of the mine. Many have united under the banner of the non-profit Save Record Ridge Action Society ( #SRRAC ).

At one point, WHY Resources sought to remove up to 200,000 tonnes of ore a year, but later reduced that to 63,500 tonnes per year — below the 70,000-tonne limit that often triggers an environmental assessment.

In a May 2025 letter to the province, the #Ktunaxa Nation Council argued alongside SRRAC that the mine footprint only dropped by 5.7 per cent, despite a 68 per cent cut in proposed production.

The stated lower production capacity “masks and understates its true capacity” and environmental footprint, added the nation, arguing it’s designed to avoid initial regulatory hurdles and be scaled up later.

SRRAC requested that Ottawa carry out an environmental review of the Record Ridge mine project.

A report issued last month from the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada rejected that request. It found the mine project did not require federal designation, and that existing laws were enough to manage the potential impacts on fish, migratory birds and Indigenous rights.

* Last week, Prime Minister #MarkCarney revealed Lena Metledge Diab will serve as Canada’s new Immigration Minister.

The first thing Diab should do as Minister is bring #ClimateActivist Zain Haq back to Canada by greenlighting his Temporary Residence Permit that has been processing since January.

Zain was deported to Pakistan in January for climate activism that resulted in low-level mischief charges. He’d been living in Canada his entire adult life, and with his Canadian wife, Sophia Papp, since 2023.

Sophia has been given the devastating choice to remain in Canada without her spouse or relocate to #Pakistan , where she doesn’t speak the language and faces significant barriers to her health and wellbeing.

A mere 48 hours before Zain was deported, he and Sophia’s Spousal Sponsorship application was rejected by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) without substantive explanation.

The couple’s lawyer, Randall Cohn, has stated that this eleventh-hour rejection is likely illegal. It also denied Zain and Sophia’s right to procedural fairness, since they didn’t have time to access the appeal process enshrined in the #BillOfRights.

Zain and Sophia’s situation is reminiscent of the #unethical treatment of many #migrants in the U.S.

#IRCC ’s last minute rejection of a young couple’s Sponsorship Application without substantive reason should raise alarm bells for anyone of conscience, but especially for those with a #legal background – and before getting into #politics , Minister Diab was a #lawyer in Halifax. That’s why we have to get Zain’s file on her desk as soon as possible. *
