Ancient word of the day: Hedgehog
The ancient word for today is hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus. In the Middle Ages, writers didn’t make reference to hedgehogs, but to urchins. This term for the spiky diminuitive animal is still favoured in some English dialects. We still have the lingering remnants of this etymology in the form of sea urchin, which is literally a sea hedgehog.
The word urchin came to England with the Norman invasion and was derived from the Latin word ericius. Before the Norman conquest, the animal was known by the Anglo-Saxon name Igl.

The Speculum sapientiae, or Mirror of Wisdom is an ancient tale of beasts in Latin. In one tale, a passing goat sees its reflection in a pond and declares himself very handsome indeed. A hedgehog trundles along afterwards and reproaches the goat telling him that profound humility, not vain boasting are what makes animals truly noble.

Finally managed to re-find the poem behind the title of The Sharp Edge Of Yesterday.
I'd read it AGES before I wrote the book-- the imagery & phrasing really stuck with me. Not the poet's name or the title, of course. Mornings are cold. Trying to remember to bring a jacket out at night. And I love it! ❤ The weather is getting snuggly, but I’m not quite ready to hibernate. There are still outdoor concerts to attend and lots to do. Like today! My favorite part of summer’s end for the past three years is covering all the Doggy Dip stories (and coming up with cute headlines like “Dip, Dip Hooray!”
Many of the towns near me, that have pools, allow dogs in the pools before they drain them at summer’s end. It’s the super cutest thing to see these dogs having so much fun. It reminds me, growing up, we had a pool. And two pocket-sized poodles, named Sunny & Cher (both little girls). They loved going in the pool. Dogs are such great swimmers.
So, goodbye summer, hello doggy dips and jackets!
And cheers to the cool people on our block who put up Halloween decorations already! Yes, sneak in there before Christmas prematurely takes over. Hello Pumpkin! LOL! 🎃 -

The Sound of Other Worlds
It’s a beautiful day here, all blue fall skies and fluffy white clouds, and birds singing in the back yard. What, one might wonder, did the landscape sound like in eons past? Before technology? Even before humans?
There are still a lot of questions to answer, particularly about dinosaurs and other creatures with soft tissue that has not traveled to us through time, but insects? That, we now have a better handle on.
What Did Jurassic Forests Sound Like? Like This.
Scientists spent over a decade reconstructing the calls of nine species of ancient insects to create the first accurate Jurassic soundscape.
Something to think about if you are a writer building a soundscape for your world. And having spent much of the weekend with mosquitoes buzzing in my ears, I can only say that insects certainly can make an impression!
