  1. Sabine Baring-Gould wrote the hymn, “Onward Christian Soldiers.” The first expansion of the church was due to what it offered. The poor & down-trodden rejected paganism because it wiped no tears. The elites wanted something stronger than speculation.

Do either of these remain as the distinctives of Christianity? We have sides which are good at one, yet undermine the other.

How can you witness to the best of Christianity?

  2. James Durham was a Presbyterian Covenanter. Here he explains Thou Shalt Not Kill. Don’t bite or wound. But it also includes racking up of rents on poor people. This “crying sin” is “frequent” and “little cared for.”

Today, it is frequently regarded a crying sin to pester wealth creators.

How can you give due regard to poor labourers and tenants?

  3. Albert Barnes, Presbyterian minister, comments on idea humans made of one blood (Acts 17:26), and equal in the matter of salvation. Human philosophies set up favored ranks by blood. Any equality that seeped in came from Christianity.

Do we turn to Genesis for arguments about geology, or humanity? Would you want that refugee family bringing their kids to your Sunday School?

How can you live out “one blood”?

  4. William Arnot, Scottish minister, on the Good Samaritan. Jesus taught and lived benevolent love. Part of his prophetic office. Same as the command to love one another (John 13:34).

Is this apt to come up in prophecy today?

How can you follow Jesus’ teaching?

  5. Thomas Gisborne, Anglican priest, refutes apology for slavery that it could make slaves happy. Gisborne says they’d be unlikely to allow an African to do the same to them.

Today we hear that slavery was a literacy and jobs program, engaged on with cordial terms. But rest assured, Big Eva tells us, you may still “get the gospel right” and hold to these views.

How can you do unto others as you would have them do unto you?
