    Whalebone (Delphi Spiderwood)

I caught slivers of the words the doctor whispered to Whalebone. Miscarried. Unfortunate, but perhaps for the best given my condition. I thought about that for a long time. What was my condition? Was it of the mind or of the body? I couldn’t say.

    Doll’s Grimoire

Our hero girl had a legion of dolls on shelves

    Only room for one poster

Plenty of room for a hundred eyes staring back

    A knock on her door

    “Your food is ready.”

These dolls doubled as a defense

    Nobody entered her room

    2.

‘She from another world’ runs down the hall, big footsteps following behind

The booming sounds get louder, almost matching her speed

She lunges at her bedroom door, gets back onto her feet and shuts it

One click of the lock, and she is protected

There’s loud banging on the door

shaking the room, shaking the dolls

Her chest heaves as a voice says “those dolls won’t save you forever.”

    For now, they are enough

    3.

Our hero girl happens upon a grimoire in the family attic, held by an old Ichimatsu doll

its eyes seemingly watched her—she had to test it by moving around a lot

she found the doll while dusting, at the behest of her mother—or shall we say, her mother’s thrown shoe

Our dumb hero opens the book and is pulled through

The dolls’ grimoire takes her to the world bathed in lava

Black spires and pillars dot the landscape

She was lucky enough to land on one

    “What is this??”

She hugs the pillar, eyes shut, “HELP!”

Her pleas are met with a loud groan coming from the planet

A creature slowly rises, lava sliding off its head and trickling off its horns

    A vantablack dragon.

“I see my book has led another snack to me. It’s been ages.”

“Sn—snack?!?” she flinches at the thought.

He introduces himself, “I am Swallowhold. That’s what the last human called me. I have many names, some unpronounceable, some beyond your tongue’s ability to speak it. I am what humans call a Wishgiver.”

He holds out his paw her her to sit on but she can feel the heat emanating off it.

    She shakes her head.

“Alright. I’ll make this quick. I will give you power to escape your unfortunate, pitiful life.”

He opened his maw as the glittering fireflies, power personified, drifted into it.

He closes it shut, feasting on a snack that was a thousand years in the making, “Ah, such lovely power.”

His eyes lock onto her, “you are potent.

    You have drive.

    You have principle.

I am elated that my book was found by you.”

There’s a knock on the door again

    “The food is ready.”

“Why don’t Ya come in and get it?”

She retorts with a snort. “Hell no.”

No one entered Our hero’s dorm

Not even Her from another World

Her roommate didn’t mind the dolls

She would sit there in bed, reading about fish anatomy for class.

Things were different now, because of the Wishgiver

    Things were better

but in the cobwebs of Our Other Girl’s mind, papa’s eyes were still watching

    the cobwebs are pulled back

    (something fresh still lives here)

    and he reaches forth

“why don’t you get your head out of those dolls and PAY ATTEN—“

in the form of an intrusive thought, Our Other Girl swipes her arm backward, glass shard in her hand cutting him

Our Hero girl is taken out of her daze and drops her books

Her roommate glances at her, then goes back to reading.

    Sinclair takes a deep breath.

  6. In Memoriam

René Magritte, La trahison des images  Long before I learned to read and write, I knew things.I knew absence and excess existed before Mrs. Freeman taught me how to add and subtract. As if chalk dust on her fingers meant something permanent. And even then I knew something was already missing before anyone gave me a name for missing. Long before geometry showed up in my seventh-grade textbook, I was already drawing trees, rockets, people, spaceships, and dogs that looked like my puppy, […]

  11. The reason I was

I never did the thing I hung up

The phone after i bluntly blinked

    Bloated week sour flavors abandon

    The poem like a     poem

    For no   purpose mess making

    Tantrum caught in a vacuum
