  1. home at last

home at last where the walls are rumbling,
    where the skies are crumbling,
where sheets slicken with silken sheens
    blotting sicknesses so defiled,
so revolting and reviled, where every
bed has been made by me
    and made poorly; where
long-dead carpenters measured once and cut
twice, thrice, and again – the hourly
    wages docked for drinking and
sent home before the work was done; all this
    is half-finished, all this
is preamble to prologue. assembly guides
for a world constructed before birth; the
fabric stained in the bolts; the
wood worm-eaten in the forest –
    and still, still, this
    is home at last.

  11. precipitate

    from the roil,
    from the boil,
    the slush of forgetfulness
    frothing; the casting
    vapor wafting off;
    a hard and shining dust
in the bottom of the pan –
for now, not now, too hot to touch,
    but when it cools –
    when it cools –
    we’ll learn what exactly
    was drifting around in there.

  12. Poem: Stay Away Stay Away

    Stay away stay away
    Stay away, darkness around him
Darkness around you all, stay away
    There's nothing fruitful in it
    There's nothing wholesome in it
    There's nothing shaking in it,
    Waiting to come out
It's all a “white tomb” inside
    And broods “of vipers”
It's all dust and death so
    Stay away stay away

  13. fingers in the spokes

    there is an allowable amount of horror;
    a simmer agreed upon,
    a subset of families dragged
away in the night, a volume of dogs
    shot point-blank by the state;
    human is the excuse-making animal.
    given a slow enough stalking
even a flimsy doe will turn and scream
    and kick; will try anything
    to alert, to defend.
    but our threshold are high.
    the factory consumes hands;
every day, one or many –
but so long as the product is good,
    who bothers to care?

  22. My Final Hurrah!

Just published on Amazon my 20th book (I hope this will be my last book) “Summa Iru: My Formal Renunciation and Farewell to the World“. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0H87DDNRM)

Just a few hours back I published on Amazon another book “Advaita Vedanta through Name-and-Form Analysis”, which was written largely with the help of Claude. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0H84F82HS)

About the Book: “Summa Iru: My Formal Renunciation and Farewell to the World

“It is time I ended the ignorance in myself.”

With these words, a writer, poet, and lifelong student of Advaita Vedanta announces his formal withdrawal from the world — effective July 16, 2026, his 62nd birthday. Not a retreat from failure, nor a flight from grief, but the logical terminus of a life spent reading, thinking, debating, and writing about one thing: the ending of ignorance, which is the ending of the seeker himself.

Summa Iru is the author’s twentieth and, by its own declaration, final book — a parting document composed in the months before silence. It gathers the last poems (“Without Her By My Side,” “The Me Time,” “I The Stranger,” “The Last Act”), the last aphorisms (“Even God disappears when you are silent”), and the last philosophical exchanges of a man tying up loose ends before going incommunicado.

Between the poems runs a sustained meditation in the tradition of Ramana Maharshi and the Ashtavakra Gita: Why does psychoanalysis fail where self-enquiry succeeds? Why is renouncing desires mere symptom-treatment while the disease of ignorance festers? What did Ramana mean when he said the future is already fixed — and that the best course is to remain silent? How does summa iru — “just be still” — dissolve the questioner along with the question?

The book also records something rarer: the texture of leave-taking itself. Letters declined. Friendships gently closed. A reply to a friend asking for a small favour: “Sorry dear, I have retired from all work and all relationships.” The ache of unrequited love examined without flinching and traced back to its root — the unworthiness we feel sitting alone with ourselves, forever seeking the other who will transport us away from our own insignificance.

Drawing on Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta Maharaj, the Ashtavakra Gita, J. Krishnamurti, Buber, Kant, Camus, and the ghazal tradition, this is comparative philosophy written not from the armchair but from the departure gate.

For readers of Advaita Vedanta, spiritual memoir, and contemplative poetry — and for anyone who has wondered what it would actually take to stop.

The author will not be available for comment. That is rather the point.

  24. When the living rot on the bodies of the dead
When the combatants’ teeth become knives
When words lose their meaning and become arsenic
When the aggressors’ nails become claws
When old friends hurry to join the carnage
When the victors’ eyes become live shells
When clergymen pick up the hammer and crucify
When officials open the door to the enemy
When the mountain peoples’ feet weigh like elephants
When roses grow only in cemeteries
When they eat the Palestinian’s liver before he’s even dead
When the sun itself has no other purpose than being a shroud

the human tide moves on . . .

By Etel Adnan, “XXXIX” from The Arab Apocalypse.

Etel Adnan was a #Lebanese #American #poet , #essayist & #VisualArtist. Adnan always lived between different languages & cultures. She spoke French, English, Greek & Turkish & lived in Paris, Beirut & California.

#Art was like home to her, something to hold on to; a language that transcends borders and cultures.

‘Colours make visible what the person is trying to say, but silent’.

One of her best-known works is Sitt Marie Rose (1978), in which she writes about the horrors of the Lebanese civil war.

Adnan began writing in French, but gradually discovered the language’s colonial undertones.

Etel Adnan grew up in Beirut, Lebanon, which was under French mandate at the time. Everyone learned French at school. Arabic, which most people spoke, became an inferior language.
