home at last

home at last where the walls are rumbling,
where the skies are crumbling,
where sheets slicken with silken sheens
blotting sicknesses so defiled,
so revolting and reviled, where every
bed has been made by me
and made poorly; where
long-dead carpenters measured once and cut
twice, thrice, and again – the hourly
wages docked for drinking and
sent home before the work was done; all this
is half-finished, all this
is preamble to prologue. assembly guides
for a world constructed before birth; the
fabric stained in the bolts; the
wood worm-eaten in the forest –
and still, still, this
is home at last.

there is an allowable amount of horror;
a simmer agreed upon,
a subset of families dragged
away in the night, a volume of dogs
shot point-blank by the state;
human is the excuse-making animal.
given a slow enough stalking
even a flimsy doe will turn and scream
and kick; will try anything
to alert, to defend.
but our threshold are high.
the factory consumes hands;
every day, one or many –
but so long as the product is good,
who bothers to care?

THE SIX THOUSAND GODS OF WISHFUL THINKING

They are up there! All of them!
They are watching us with
half a span of attention, they
are watching us and dawdling their phones,
they are surprised how much we’re like them, but
not with any familiarity; any fondness; the
six thousand gods are pretty sure
we’ll get out of this one, we
always have in the past; the twelve thousand
(less or more a few) eyes are drifting away,
through the cool of space to some other
place, with some other people:
it’ll all turn out alright, probably,
they’ll check back
later, maybe,
and see what’s left

New poem about when I went to Norway when I was young and I watched some jellyfish float up to feed. The memory really stuck with me, along with the admiration for their existence. Link below:

In the Deep: A Poem About Jellyfish, Memory, and Darkness

It was an old memory.
In Norway, with unrestrained daylight,
and slugs horned and black, wiggling out of the stalks
of my great aunt’s garden.
Behind her lemon house, with leafy siding,
waxy with uncensored sunlight.

We’re on the sea for lunch, it is black, fathomless,
the inky water clinging to the cliffs.
On a patio, the wind is flag-tight, whipping,
a sightless electric current howling.
The smell is herring, crackers, beer, and cigarette smoke
I’m eight-years-old, eating french fries with mayo.

Our hosts promised me jellyfish.
“Give it about an hour, they
come up to feed, they’re down deep.”
We wait, the sun a muddy pearl.
There are slivers of chittering dolphins,
slicing and dancing through the whitecaps.

Then, they arrive.
Rising, slowly, a time-lapse firework
of living lace and fire, bloomed from a perfect abyss.
Those halos ascending
an endless rack of bioluminescent antlers
threaded into themselves in pulses.

I watched over the rail.
The seagulls cackled. The waves banged.
More, a herd, a cluster, a squadron of coalescing fabric.
Shards of the underworld sun blossoming upwards.
A true kaleidoscope crown spiking
the gloom for all these floating kings and queens.

Now, that evening by the bay
is almost lost against my small life
and its own vast ocean of dark moments.
But, I’m still here
remembering with teary eyes
how those perfect stars

were forged in the crushing darkness.

那时以为河流会永远清澈，以为口袋里装满了星星。蹲在草丛里看一只甲虫渡河，竟觉得那是世上最庄严的远航。我对每一朵蒲公英说“不要飞走”，可风比誓言更轻。

如今我站在这里，影子比身体更长。我学会了计算时间，却失去了数星星的耐心。我的口袋里只剩下一张揉皱的车票，和一枚不再发光的玻璃珠子。

那个曾经用整个下午看云变形的孩子，正隔着玻璃看我。她仰起脸问：“你把我的星星弄丢了吗？”

童年的地基上长出了陌生的高楼。可每到深夜，我仍能听见那扇木门吱呀作响，像谁在梦里轻轻叹息。

记忆像一道我背对而行的光，每当我想回头，它就退得更远。我只能在自己的影子里，辨认曾经亮过的轮廓。

有时候，我会把耳朵贴在往事的心口，听那个孩子还在唱歌。她的歌声那么细小，像一粒种子在冻土下呼吸。她对我说：
“你往前走，别回头。我会一直在这里，替你保留所有没被说出口的愿望。”

我知道，只要我还能在人群的缝隙里，偶尔想起一只甲虫的远航，我就没有完全变成另一个人。
