Poem: Exhausted

We are so stupid before You
Do You ever wonder what we're doing? 
Do You want to shake the globe
And see what settles down again
Instead of letting us crack the glass?
Is that why You stopped talking?
Because we kept writing the words down
Without looking up their meanings? 

storehouse syndrome

catch a smile on the air and
pin it to the shadowbox; find
something worth letting free and
keep it in a cage. the world is
cutting flowers from their stems
and putting them in water;
the world forgets to change the water –
everything dries, everything stays
intact and empty,
beautiful. lifelike. if you
bring your hand close you
can imagine it’s growing.

είναι πιο όμορφα από τους ίδιους
πιο βαριά από ελπίδα

Απόδοση στα ελληνικά: Γιάννης Ρίτσος. Ναζίμ Χικμέτ.Ο Ναζίμ Χικμέτ (15 Ιανουαρίου 1902 – 3 Ιουνίου 1963) ήταν Τούρκος ποιητής και δραματουργός, κι από τις σημαντικότερες φωνές της τουρκικής λογοτεχνίας τον 20ο αιώνα. Εισήγαγε τον ελεύθερο στίχο κι ένα ευρύ φάσμα νέων θεμάτων στην ποίηση, επηρεάζοντας σημαντικά την τουρκική λογοτεχνία της δεκαετίας του ’30. Πέρασε πολλά χρόνια στη φυλακή για τις κομμουνιστικές του ιδέες και πέθανε εξόριστος στη Μόσχα. Θεωρείται ένα από τα ινδάλματα της τουρκικής Αριστεράς. Στα ελληνικά, ποιήματα του Ναζίμ Χικμέτ μετέφρασε ο Γιάννης Ρίτσος και ορισμένα από αυτά μελοποίησαν ο Μάνος Λοίζος και ο Θάνος Μικρούτσικος.

Free Stickers and the Magic of Corridor

The August edition of Corridor vol 42 is coming out this week. We are slowly making our way toward Volume 50!

As a small thank-you to our wonderful, mysterious readers, we’re passing out a collection of FREE stickers. We found some lovely flower stickers along with tiny replicas of classic and modern book covers. Fun!

What a joyful project Corridor has become. Our distributors have been sharing stories about their interactions with poets and readers throughout our community. Connections are happening as copies are left in newspaper racks and community areas of coffee shops and restaurants.

One distributor shared that the staff at Avenue Bread on James Street actually clap when new zines arrive each month. Many locations, including the FireHouse in Fairhaven, go through their copies so quickly that they are restocked twice a month. Distributors also place Corridor in Little Free Libraries, where the copies disappear every month. People are picking up these little zines, reading them, and sharing their appreciation.

As we enter the last official month of summer, I’ve been thinking about the changes that come with the seasons and the changes we experience in our own lives. Corridor continues to pull at my heart, and I feel grateful for this growing collection and the community surrounding it. In this issue, you’ll find recurring themes of nature’s cycles of change, loss, and renewal, and the ways they reflect our own human experience.

Thank you for reading, sharing, and helping Corridor find its way into so many hands.

Linda Conroy, a Bellingham poet, and author of two poetry collections, likes to write about the complexities of human nature and our connection to the natural world. 

Harvey Schwartz hitchhiked west in 1971 for a summer vacation and never returned. His life since has been sprinkled with magic that he tries to put in words. 

Naomi Stenberg (she/they) lives in Seattle. A poem of Naomi’s was nominated for the 2026 Monarch Queer Literary Awards. Naomi’s new chapbook, The Measure of Breath, is coming out this Fall. 

Elizabeth Jane Pryce is a poet, “Wild Child”, (2010). Author of an early childhood memoir, “Chosen”, (2022). She currently writes a blog: bluebottleswritingstudio.com

Duncan Shields is an animator, writer, podcaster, and performer currently living in Vancouver BC, with his wife and daughter. He enjoys the rain and burritos, and he’s happy to be here. 

A garden-variety poet, Betty Scott plants images, sounds, and rhythms she hopes will bloom in readers’ minds after she dips her hands into muddy soil, where, for her, laughter resides.

For Nelson (May 16, 1944-July 13, 2005)

If I would have my life to live over again,
I would find an old stone wall in disrepair
and I would spend my days seeking the tumbled
down stones hidden in the grass.

By day I would rebuild the wall. At night I
would lie in its lee. I would not be afraid
of the snakes and rodents disturbed from
their dark places in the cracks between the
stones where they sleep.

And when my life came to an end and the wall
was as yet unfinished, I would not moan. I
would lay myself down against the rocks and
let my body fade away into a place of rest in
the cracks between the stones.

Currently people surround
Yet I feel alone.
So much sound,
But my voice is though an ocean thrown a stone.

Lonely but not in retreat,
Music yet I do not dance.
I look pretty neat,
Yet do not feel engaged in your trance.

So alone,

Civilisation under Colonial Conditions: Development, Difference and Violence in Swahili Poems, 1888–1907.

ABSTRACT
For a global history of development, Swahili #poems from the #German colonial period are valuable sources as they help to question the diffusionist view of development discourses as colonial import. This article analyses how concepts of development ( #maendeleo ) and civilisation ( #ustaarabu ) figured in poems written by Swahili authors between 1888 and 1907. Going beyond a reading of these texts as pro- or anti-colonial, it shows the importance poets attached to urban infrastructural improvement. Poems were also informed by the self-image of the superior, urban, #Muslim strata of coastal society ( #waungwana ) in contrast to inferior #nonMuslim inland societies ( #washenzi ). Several poets suggested that inland societies should be disciplined, yet differences to coastal Swahili society were usually not couched in terms of temporality nor in terms of a civilising mission. Poets had to come to terms, however, with new power relations as a result of German conquest. While some authors openly criticised colonial violence, others also embraced colonial interventions in infrastructural and economic aspects – but still expressed nostalgia for the past. In sum, the poems constitute a transitional space in Swahili discourses on development, showing that these were not merely colonial imports but grew from multiple roots.

In 2016 I had the good fortune of co-editing with ire'ne lara silva an anthology of #poets writing on the life and work of the visionary poet and #theorist #GloriaAnzaldúa. So much had been written about Anzaldúa as an inspirational theorist in various fields of study, while her role as poet had languished in reflection.
