Roger Peyrefitte, Les amitiés particulières
Un roman sur l’amour… entre deux garçons dans la prime adolescence des années 1920 et 1921. Georges de Sarre, fils de marquis, a 14 ans, le teint mat et les cheveux châtains ; Alexandre Motier 12 ans, est un ange blond comme l’Amour de Thespies, copie de Praxitèle. Tous deux sont beaux et l’aîné est excellent élève, de quoi émuler et élever le plus jeune. Dans ce huis-clos des collèges de Jésuites, la sensibilité s’exaspère et la sensualité suit, mais l’amour platonique sublime les relations. Ce qui suscite des jalousies parmi les adultes ayant fait vœux de chasteté, chargés d’éducation.
Pas de sexe entre les deux garçons, malgré les prêtres obsédés par la chose après saint Paul, et qui pourchassent le moindre poème entre deux élèves, largement pour évacuer leurs propres désirs. Alexandre demande à Georges : « sais-tu les choses qu’il ne faut pas savoir ? » p.160 – ce qui en dit long sur le tabou et l’interdit, comme sur l’ingénuité du petit. D’ailleurs, le père de Trennes est un surveillant de dortoir très intrusif qui fait boire des liqueurs aux élèves, dans le négligé de nuit du pyjama largement ouvert sur la gorge, et ce dans sa propre chambre, après les avoir observés dormir à la lampe électrique. L’admiration de Georges et du père Lauzon est plus chaste, en témoigne ce portrait d’Alexandre à 12 ans : « La photographie montrait Alexandre dormant sur une chaise longue, plus gracieux encore qu’il ne dormait dans le train des vacances de Pâques. On détaillait la ligne de ses yeux, ses sourcils presque droits, l’ourlet de sa bouche, ses oreilles de nacre, et les boucles de ses cheveux qui formaient une danse immobile et joyeuse en l’honneur de sa beauté. Ses mains ouvraient leurs paumes rayonnantes, comme si elles attendaient d’autres mains, et ses jambes nues appelaient des caresses invisibles » p.434. L’amour n’exclut pas la sensualité, mais elle est maîtrisée, soumise au respect pour l’âme de la personne aimée, selon les trois étages de l’amour selon Platon, du désir pour le corps à l’affection de cœur et l’émerveillement pour l’âme. Un amour filial. « La mère avait posé une main sur le cou d’Alexandre, épanoui dont l’échancrure de la chemise, et elle jouait avec la chaînette que Georges avait baisée à leur premier rendez-vous » p.294. Sensualité de la chaîne de cou tendu par une médaille d’or, qui fait ressortir le laiteux du teint.
D’où le contraste offert par le roman entre l’amour flétri, induit par la pudibonderie catholique qui traque « le Mal » partout parce qu’on refoule tout désir naturel – et l’amour grec lumineux, « de nature », induit par les œuvres antiques, écrits de Virgile et statues de Praxitèle, étudiés en classe. Les prêtres voudraient célébrer un amour éthéré, celui du Bien-Aimé, le Christ, exempt de tout désir charnel. D’où les célébrations et les lectures édifiantes où le masochisme des très jeunes martyrs qui arrachent leur tunique pour courir nus au devant du fer et du feu est exalté comme exemple. D’où aussi la conception totalisante, âme et corps, de l’éducation catholique, où l’on se couche très tôt pour se lever très tôt, et ainsi éviter les mauvaises tentations, où la journée est réglée par une suite d’activités prévues et surveillées. Même les « vacances » sont soumises au programme, avec des prières et des devoirs à faire. L’auteur se plaît à énumérer les messes, retraites, rogations processions, célébrations ; il fait la comptabilité des indulgences, ces bon-points pour le Ciel, des innombrables saints morts pour la Foi dans la torture du corps, que le clergé se complaît à rappeler chaque jour aux adolescents pour les « édifier ».
Même si la casuistique jésuite peut parfois déconcerter : « Il était bien difficile d’apprécier la valeur d’un acte, autant que celle d’une intention. Les indulgences de Lucien étaient plus commodes : l‘intention était indiquée, on n’avait qu’à s’y conformer, et tout était dit. Mais, à Saint-Claude, quel moyen de s’y retrouver au milieu d’autant d’intérêts adverses ? Les maîtres eux-mêmes rendaient la tâche difficile, avec leur casuistique. Le supérieur n’avait-il pas joué de la direction d’intention, et le père Lauzon de la restriction mentale, ainsi que le père de Trennes jouait de l’équivoque ? De plus, le résultat des actes avait été parfois à l’opposé des intentions : lorsque Georges avait voulu séduire Lucien, il l’avait converti ; Alexandre séduit avait sauvé la pureté de Georges, et Maurice l’y avait aidé par son impureté. Tout était vrai et faux en même temps, tout était oui et non » p.363.
Les collèges religieux vivent en communauté, et la doctrine veut que choisir le particulier est frustrer l’ensemble de l’amour et de l’amitié due à tous. Sauf que les relations sont avant tout personnelles, même Sparte, la communautaire exacerbée, le reconnaissait. A traquer de tels sentiments, en soupçonnant la perversion du sexe dans ce monde encore assez innocent (surtout entre-deux guerres, sans les réseaux sociaux ni Youporn !), on tordait les âmes, on les rendait coupables, façon d’acquérir sur les êtres un pouvoir moral exorbitant.
La geste de Georges et d’Alexandre fait souffler un vent de liberté sur ce carcan, en se jouant des prêtres et des règles, dans l’ingénuité et la chasteté des relations. « Georges fut troublé à l’idée qu’Alexandre put être déjà tel que Lucien. Il s’était dit que son innocence n’était probablement que relative, mais il n’aurait pas voulu le savoir pervers. Il souhaitait que leur amitié restât à égale distance du bien et du mal. Mais quelle était la cause des élans que cet enfant avait pour lui ? » p.147. Ils sont touchants, ces prime adolescents, et Roger Peyrefitte reste tout de pudeur, racontant par le roman les passions qu’il a vécues dans le collège lazariste où il est entré à 9 ans. Alexandre le reconnaît à 15 ans, le collège a formé son caractère et mûri son âme. « Cette année d’internat religieux l’avait enrichi plus que ses nombreuses années d’externat au lycée. Ce n’était pas, comme le supérieur l’aurait dit, à cause de la communion quotidienne. C’était à cause de ce mélange perpétuel du sacré et du profane, qui donnait aux moindres choses un reflet particulier ; c’était à cause de cette lutte entre les élèves et les prêtres, digne de celle du chrétien dans le monde. La ‘vie spirituelle intense’ que l’on menait publiquement là-bas, alimentait une autre vie, d’autant plus intense qu’elle devait se cacher » p.404.
Mais la tragédie est au bout. Le père Lauzon, « directeur de conscience » (quel titre vaniteux et tyrannique !) s’est rendu compte que les deux garçons entretenaient une relation de tendresse, via des regards échangés, de rares chastes baisers et quelques billets. Il en est jaloux, se voulant « protecteur » exclusif d’Alexandre. Alors il commande, il exige, il impose que l’aîné Georges renvoie les billets reçus du petit à son envoyeur, ce qui signifie la fin de toute relation. Mais Alexandre l’innocent ne comprend pas, il se croit rejeté brutalement par celui en qui il avait placé son amitié, exclusive et absolue comme on l’est à 12 ans. Il se tue.
Jean Delannoy en a tiré un film avec le jeune (et déjà cabotin) Didier Haudepin. S’il suit l’histoire d’assez près, il n’a pas la force de l’écrit, qui laisse à l’imagination le soin de compatir dans le silence de la lecture.
La diversité des illustrations en poche, J’ai lu dès 1958 (avec une couverture aguicheuse de G. Benvenuti qui veut reproduire l’amour de Praxitèle), puis le Livre de poche dès 1971, montre que ce livre a été un succès populaire parce qu’il parlait vrai dans un univers bourgeois catholique encore fort coincé – et qu’un Bayrou, par exemple, comme Tartuffe, n’a pas voulu voir. L’assouplissement des règles du culte par Vatican II, mais surtout la révolution des mœurs de mai 68, ont brisé les limites, et de nombreux prêtres se sont crus autorisés à assouvir leurs perversions sur des enfants dont ils avaient la charge. Bien loin de l’amour chrétien, et de la hauteur morale où se situent Georges et d’Alexandre. Quant aux amitiés exclusives, elles existent toujours, entre filles et entre garçons, elles permettent de grandir en se sentant moins seul. Mais l’amitié va rarement jusqu’aux expériences sexuelles car notre époque est plus permissive (plus « normale ») envers les relations avec l’autre sexe.
Une chose cependant me gêne chez Georges : c’est une balance. Certes, il agit pour son intérêt et pas pour se faire bien voir, comme nombre d’internautes aujourd’hui. Mais quand même, quand on se pique de morale antique, c’est une faiblesse. Georges laisse expressément traîner un billet doux qu’André, l’ami de Lucien, son voisin de dortoir, avait écrit. Georges était jaloux de l’amitié des deux garçons et voulait Lucien pour lui tout seul. André est renvoyé du collège – ce qui n’empêche pas les deux amis de se rencontrer lors des vacances et d’entretenir une correspondance suivie. Signe d’une amitié mûrie entre égaux. La seconde fois, c’est pour le bien du dortoir qu’il va réveiller le père supérieur lors d’une nuit où le père de Trennes a entraîné Maurice, le propre frère d’Alexandre, en pyjama dans sa chambre. Trennes est renvoyé du collège. L’auteur balancera lui-même nombre d’homosexuels cachés, dont le pape Pie XII, et publiera sans autorisation sa correspondance sulfureuse avec Montherlant.
Ce premier roman est le meilleur de l’auteur, qui écrit magnifiquement. Il ne sera hélas pas suivi d’autant de talent, Peyrefitte sacrifiant au plaisir de scandaliser ses contemporains. Dans l’amitié, il y a de l’amour, une aspiration à la pureté platonicienne. Georges et Alexandre s’en tiennent là, et c’est ce qui est beau dans cette histoire.

Minted in Constantinople around 692–695, the coin depicts Christ facing forward, with long hair and a beard, a cross behind His head, one hand raised in blessing and the Book of the Gospels in the other. The inscription identifies Him as Jesus Christ, King of those who reign.

The #Takanawa #Catholic #Church just called the police on me. The police were very nice and understanding and let me go after a brief talk.
I have been seeking #Justice after being assaulted by the guards at Hope Services ( a catholic charity), in #Kona #Hawaii . Several other #homeless people had confided in me that they were being abused, but did not dare speak out, for fear of further violence. Also, they depend upon the charity for food.
I approached the catholic leaders politely in Kona, and they did not take responsibility. Then I moved to #Tokyo seeking political asylum.
I approached Mr. Takaii, a priest at the #Meguro Catholic Church, and asked for answers concerning the abuse. Mr. Takaii told me that he did not speak any English, though we had been talking in English for a few days, and he speaks English fluently.
After persistently and politely raising questions with the Takanawa church, I kept being stonewalled. I still have questions about why they cannot feed me 3 meals a day, turning me away hungry, though they just held a fundraiser for #hungry people in the Philippines. The priest, Mr. Noguchi harshly told me to go back to America.
Just now, I returned to Takanawa church from the police station, and Mr. Noguchi handed me a letter from Mr. Wataru Suematsu, the parish leader, banning me from church, and threatening police action.
I intend to get justice for me, and for other people the Catholic Church continues to abuse.
The Catholic Church is doing something shady with the money, as it is a lavishly constructed church, with a big attendance on weekends, and collects a lot of money.
The Catholic Church is an organization by and for, old white men. They will always elect an old white man as #pope ( now available in American flavor ). A 39 year old Japanese woman will never be pope.
The organization was funded by loot from #colonial #genocide, which it continues to hold on to, and continue as a big mind-manipulating business. Even as pope after pope apologizes for the atrocities of the church, the abuses continue.
Pope Leo has called for #peace though he has not yet asked his followers to resign from the #military which would be a real follow through.
People of the world, from countries that the church looted and impoverished, are rising up and demanding #reparations
There’s so much blood on the hands of the church, that the pope’s crocodile tears are not enough to wash them away. Empty words are not enough. People demand to be made whole.

"The Forward compiled and reviewed video of 10 #pageants in the #US since 2020 that feature a #Jewish character named “zhyd,” “Moshko” or “Chaim,” and sometimes his wife, usually named Sarah. All were posted to social media, in many cases by the #churches themselves.
The pageants mix and match a few motifs, all showing these two #Jews in a negative light as they try to lure #Christians to commit sin. Some tempt the faithful with goods, loans or liquor.
