Apologetics: The Atonement is Not a Get-Out-of-Jail-Free Card.

One of the most common criticisms against the substitutionary atonement of Jesus is the idea that it simply gives Christians license to sin and protects it. This criticism has been around for millennia and hasn’t slowed down. In fact, since the advent of the Internet, it almost seems that this argument has more ground to stand on than ever before as we’ve been privier to Christians acting badly and more church scandals have been reported. Many people half-jokingly say that Christianity is a religion where you can have your cake and eat it, too; something where you can feel spiritual and like you’re better than other people, while still acting in sin. However, despite these accusations, what many people don’t understand is that the doctrine of atonement was never meant as a get-out-of-jail-free card for sin.

Though Christ’s substitutionary atonement on the cross does mean that all your sins are covered, that does not mean that it’s a license to continue sinning. Paul himself addresses this in Romans 6: 15-18, when he writes: “What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.”

What this means is that though our sins are covered by Christ’s atonement, as Christians, we aren’t supposed to continue sinning. In fact, we’re obliged to stop sinning out of gratitude to Jesus for His sacrifice. This is further supported by the fact that in order to be saved from your sin, you must accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, and you must repent of your sin. While it’s true that none of us will be perfect on this side of eternity, if you are still willfully and consistently sinning against God, are you truly saved? Have you truly repented?

The Bible answers this question with an emphatic “No.” While there will be times were we as Christians slip into sin, if one isn’t showing the signs of repentance and change in their lives after converting, then it may be that they weren’t saved. It may be that they converted on the outside, but never actually repented. 2 Peter 2:20-22 speaks about this. This chapter deals, in context, with false teachers and what will happen to them, but I think this principle also applies to false converts. They say they’re Christians but don’t repent. Instead of turning their lives around and turning away from sin, they turn in a full circle and continue in sin. According to 2 Peter 2:20-22, it would have been better if those people had never known Jesus Christ in the first place than to have known Him and walked away.

Another way to think about this is in the form of a story. Imagine you’re camping with a friend of yours or a family member. The area where you’re camping is near a lake with a lot of dangerous animals in it. The person you’re camping with tells you not to go near it because you could get hurt or be killed. However, you ignore their warning and go to the lake where you’re attacked by the animals living in it. Your friend jumps in and saves you, but in the process, is beat up and on the brink of death from saving you. Seeing this, do you, out of gratitude, stay far away from the lake or do you jump back in even though your friend risked his life for you?

This illustration shows the issue with treating atonement like a get-out-of-jail-free card. Sin is like that lake full of dangerous animals. At the Fall, mankind jumped into that lake, knowing the danger, and not caring. Jesus jumped after us, saved us, and was killed for it. The death that we deserved was taken by Him. To jump back into sin, then, would not only be foolish, but ungrateful. It’s spitting in the face of the one who saved you.
