Shabbat Shalom Friends 🕯️🕯️
This marks the 51st Shabbat in a row that I have had the privilege of sharing your beautiful photos and messages in response to my weekly Shabbat greeting. Fifty one weeks. Which means next Friday will be one full year, and it will also be the last Shabbat Shalom montage.
I want to sit with that for a moment before I say anything else.
This tradition started on Facebook, and it grew so quietly beautiful that I began sharing it everywhere I am. Not because it needed a bigger audience, but because something this simple deserves to be seen.
What began as a simple post has become one of the most meaningful things I do. Week after week you brought light into this space. Candles on your tables. Family gathered close. Quiet corners of your homes on a Friday evening. Some of you have been here since the very first one, and some of you joined along the way, and every single image made this what it became.

“#Jewishjoy.” The phrase has become nearly ubiquitous across the #Jewish communal landscape in recent years. #Hillels, federations, #dayschools, camps and communal organizations regularly invite us to “celebrate Joyful #Judaism,” “amplify Jewish joy,” “spread joyful Judaism” or “be centered around Jewish joy.” It’s easy to understand why. In a post- #Oct7 world marked by heightened #antisemitism, grief, fatigue, polarization and anxiety, joy is a needed corrective to the trauma and pain that, for many, are part of the Jewish experience. Joy reminds us that Judaism is also song, food, friends, dancing and delight.
As a concept and as an experience, Jewish joy is valuable. However, in too many instances, Jewish joy has become both the dominant goal and tool through which we build Jewish life. This unintentionally narrows what Judaism is, who it is for and what counts as meaningful Jewish participation. Alone, Jewish joy isn’t enough.
Here’s why."

According to man's understanding, what you say could introduce doubt about the Christ, who gave us the new testament, which is his blood, a sacrifice he made available also to you.
Before #Judaism, there was Abraham. He was never called a #Jew, but he was a friend of #God. And #Jesus said, "Before Abraham was, I am."
Nothing predates God, who is the Eternal Truth. This planet was created by Jesus, who is the Word of God made flesh, who existed before the world was.

Pretty interesting.
"Three out of four #Jewish adults in the #US say they incorporate #Judaism into their daily lives on a regular basis, a new report from #SenseWorldwide and released by the #JimJosephFoundation revealed this month.
Dubbed #ProjectPrism, this study examined how young Jewish- #American adults live, especially of those who don't participate in Jewish communal life, as well as the experiences, factors, and key drivers that shape their decisions.
The study involved more than 2,000 #Jews between the ages of 22 and 30, across a spectrum of backgrounds, religious identities, and life experiences."

"The #Hellenization of #Judea and the #assimilation of #American #Jews obviously have radically different etiologies. One occurred in the context of #Hellenistic #imperialism; the other largely through voluntary #integration into a liberal #democracy that offered Jews unprecedented security and opportunity. Yet their morphology may contain a recognizable similarity: cultural encounter, selective assimilation, reinterpretation of #Jewish identity, competing visions of #Jewishness, and eventually intra-Jewish conflict.
The point is not that modern anti-#Zionist Jews are simply modern #Hellenists. Rather, the Hellenistic crisis provides a historical model for understanding how assimilation can eventually turn a disagreement about how Jews should relate to the surrounding world into a conflict over what #Judaism itself means."

Shabbat Shalom Friends 🕯️🕯️
This marks the 50th Shabbat in a row that I have shared your beautiful photos and messages in response to my weekly greeting. Fifty weeks. What began as a simple post has become one of my favorite traditions, and that is entirely because of you.
And this one arrives with something special. We have entered Elul, the final month of the Hebrew year, the quiet stretch of reflection before everything begins again. A month made for exactly what you already do here every week. Pausing. Looking inward. Reaching toward each other.
Reading your comments has become one of my favorite ways to welcome Shabbat. If I ever miss responding it is never intentional, sometimes comments get hidden, but I always feel the spirit behind them 💙
You give me the gift of sharing my passion for teaching Hebrew and for community.
Wishing you a peaceful and meaningful Shabbat, and a beautiful start to Elul.
Shabbat Shalom 💙

Being a mensch
I'm not really a religious person. Having said that, I enjoyed and appreciated this episode of For Heaven's Sake from the Shalom Hartman Institute about being a mensch from a Jewish perspective: https://pca.st/episode/be27db9e-2df5-47f1-9f34-af797a88de1c -

"In a townhouse in #Greenpoint, #Brooklyn, a gathering for #TuBAv was underway. There was chanting and breathwork, singing and ceremony. Several Brooklyn-based #Jewish communities, including Temple of the Stranger and Lab/ #Shul, had come together for the experience.
These vibes are usually associated with Eastern traditions, paganism or indigenous American practices; most Westerners who want that form of spirituality go looking for it at Buddhist meditation centers or ayahuasca retreats, forms of engagement more often associated with the 1960s or ’70s #counterculture movement than with a #synagogue.
But a group of #rabbis, leaders and #spiritual seekers believe drum circles, chanting, #meditation and #mysticism are, in fact, just as core to #Judaism as any #rabbinic text — a sort of lost magic that has impeded vibrant, direct spiritual experience."
