  2. I was very young when he passed away, but I knew him and I remember him. He arrived in the US in 1913. I have his fancy kippah (probably bought in the States not all that long ago, but it was his) and a matzoh cloth his wife Bessie, my great-grandmother, embroidered. I knew her too.

I also have a pair of decorated book covers for siddurim that supposedly belonged to *his* grandfather. I can't verify that - he didn't tell me that, I heard that later - but I'm glad to have those, too.

  3. My great-grandfather left his shtetl in the Pale and came to America for three reasons.

    1) to avoid the pogroms.

    2) to avoid impressment and involuntary service in the Czar's army.

(I thought that was a hell of a thing. Either the cossacks come and try to kill you, or you could be forced into the military to serve involuntarily for twenty years. Or both!)

    3) To get away from the Rabbi. He was sick of it. Sick of the stifling traditional life.

  4. Wild thing about cantorial school: learning that SO many prayer melodies are built on bad Hebrew. I used to think this was, like, an ashkenaz vs. sefardi thing, but it's all based in biblical, and the ta'amim are written right there, telling you where the accent falls.

So why is it lehadlik ner shel SHAbbat and not shabbAT? Yiddish accents preferring penultimate stress! I've been singing with an accent for a language I've never spoken, lol.

  9. From “The Forbidden Question,” (“De verboden vraag”) De Groene Amsterdammer, September 9, 2026, excerpted from Antizionisme: Een Joodse geschiedenis (Anti-Zionism: A Jewish History):

Benjamin Moser describes unlearning #Zionism as “a process of growth, a deconstruction,” comparing it to unlearning a mother tongue.

He writes that Zionism was a recent and contested project, not an ancient or inevitable expression of #Judaism. Anti-Zionism among Jews was older than Zionism; before Herzl, the idea of Jewish return to Palestine was originally Christian, while many Jews saw Zionist nationalism, separatism, and militarism as a step backward.

Rejecting Zionism was not “amputating” part of himself but entering a hidden Jewish tradition that Zionism had suppressed and that Zionism’s escalating cruelty ultimately vindicated. He’s calling for Jewish self-centeredness to end and for Palestinians, “the real victims of Zionism,” to be placed at the center.

  19. "In a townhouse in #Greenpoint, #Brooklyn, a gathering for #TuBAv was underway. There was chanting and breathwork, singing and ceremony. Several Brooklyn-based #Jewish communities, including Temple of the Stranger and Lab/ #Shul, had come together for the experience.

These vibes are usually associated with Eastern traditions, paganism or indigenous American practices; most Westerners who want that form of spirituality go looking for it at Buddhist meditation centers or ayahuasca retreats, forms of engagement more often associated with the 1960s or ’70s #counterculture movement than with a #synagogue.

But a group of #rabbis, leaders and #spiritual seekers believe drum circles, chanting, #meditation and #mysticism are, in fact, just as core to #Judaism as any #rabbinic text — a sort of lost magic that has impeded vibrant, direct spiritual experience."

  23. I've written a blog post entitled "Why I (a Bicentennial baby) have complicated feelings about patriotism, the flag, and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence"

    Here are the opening paragraphs:

I decide to write this blog post partly as a message to my future self (so I can remember what this moment was like), but also because I know others are feeling this tension, but might be nervous to express how they are feeling.

I was born in June 1976, only a month before the US Bicentennial, so I was brought up in a patriotic world. And I grew up in Oklahoma, in a context that was saturated in patriotic ideology. But today at age 50, I sadly see things very differently and in some ways I’m grieving this change.

I think it is time to unpack why I’m feeling grief at this moment. . .

  24. Judeo-Christian :fozzie_wocka_wocka:

"Among the many #faiths practiced by millions of #Texas #students, a new statewide required #reading list that includes #biblical passages draws from just two traditions: #Protestant #Christianity and #Judaism.

Yet Texas #rabbis say #Jews had no role in shaping how #Judaism appears in the #curriculum, and they disagree with how the lone #Jewish text is presented. Rather than teaching about Judaism on its own terms, they argue, the lessons filter Jewish texts through a #Christian perspective.

The #readinglist, which is expected to go into effect in 2030, will have #publicschool students across the state reading passages from the #NewTestament and mostly Christian #translations of the #Hebrew Bible alongside #literary classics. Of the curriculum’s six #HebrewBible readings, just one uses a Jewish #translation."

  25. From NCJW: As rabbis and Jewish clergy, you are often the first person someone turns to during moments both big and small, when they’re looking for a thoughtful listener or seeking words of advice or encouragement. Yet some of us may not feel fully equipped to offer the unconditional, informed, and judgment-free support that our communities deserve.

That's why we're inviting you to join us for All Options for Pregnancy Support, a pastoral care training series designed to equip Jewish clergy with the tools needed to support people navigating decisions around pregnancy options — including abortion, parenting, adoption, medical circumstances, and more.

The training takes place over three Zoom sessions:
    - Wednesday, August 12 | 1:00 –5:00 pm ET (4 hours)
    - Wednesday, August 19 | 1:00–5:00 pm ET (4 hours)
    - Wednesday, August 26 | 1:00–2:30 pm ET (90 minutes)

“We need to shift our relationship to the Three Weeks. Rather than thinking about them as simply three weeks of mourning, it’s a chance for us to draw meaning from our historical tragedies and use it as an opportunity to reflect on today’s challenges.”

  27. We seem to be having a lot of difficulty telling the difference between #religion and #nationality. It's not hard:

    #Islam, #Judaism and #Christianity are religions.

#Israeli, British or #Iranian are nationalities.

Don't use "Muslim" as a nationality; it isn't one. Neither is "Jewish".

    There, that's much clearer, isn't it? 👍 😀
