Saint Macrina the Younger, also known as Macrina of Cappadocia, is commemorated on July 19. Born around 330 AD in Cappadocia (modern-day Turkey), she was the eldest of ten children in an extraordinarily holy family that produced several saints, including her brothers Saint Basil the Great and Saint Gregory of Nyssa.
After her fiancé died, Macrina chose to remain unmarried and devoted herself to a life of prayer and asceticism. She played a crucial role in her family's spiritual development, particularly influencing her brother Basil's decision to pursue monastic life. Following her father's death, she convinced her mother Emmelia to transform their estate into a monastic community, where they lived alongside their servants as equals in a life of prayer, work, and study.
Macrina became the community's spiritual leader, emphasizing contemplation, manual labor, and care for the poor. Her brother Gregory credited her with being his teacher in philosophy and theology, calling her "the Teacher." She was known for her wisdom, holiness, and miraculous healings.
Macrina died around 379 AD. Gregory of Nyssa wrote a biography and dialogue about her, preserving her memory and theological insights. She represents an important example of women's leadership and intellectual contribution in the early Church.
