  1. "[A] #Jewish #scholar of #Christian #Scriptures. Levine has worked to improve how #Christians and her fellow #Jews understand each other. She's spoken at many #churches and taught students about the ancient Jewish context of Jesus' life and teachings. She's #authored numerous #books, some in tandem with Christian #scholars; she and a co- #author even presented one #book personally to #Pope Francis.

    But after the #Catholic Biblical Association of #America announced earlier this month that Levine was elected its first-ever Jewish president, an #antisemitic backlash began.

    Denunciations appeared [...] Critics called her “anti-Christian,” claimed she's trying to hijack #Catholicism, denounced Jews for not accepting Jesus, and tacked on anti- #Zionist comments.

    While some questioned why the association would appoint anyone who wasn't a Catholic, much of the criticism was infused with anti-Jewish statements. They come at a time of rising #antisemitism in the country.

  4. Snakes in The Garden of Innocence
    =======================

    After days of hiking, the missionaries came across a tribe living in isolation from civilization. The tribals were surprised to see outsiders, but were very welcoming and hospitable, showing the missionaries around the village, like children, excited to have guests, and eager to show them around their little world. They usually walked around nude, wearing nothing but flowers and smiles. They laughed a lot, the loud laughter of carefree people. In a few days, the missionaries had learned some of their mellifluous language. They told the tribals to receive the Word of God, and become Christians, which greatly confused the tribe. The missionaries pushed on, telling them that they had to be saved, which caused the tribe to guffaw, and roar with laughter. A silver haired matriarch spoke up and said they were fine, and didn't understand what they needed to be saved from. Frustrated, a missionary put a movie on his laptop to keep the tribe busy, while the missionaries held a meeting to discuss how to convert these heathen. While they were in the meeting, the tribe gathered around the laptop, and watched "The Passion of The Christ", transfixed. After watching the movie, the whole tribe made a beeline to be saved, with aghast expressions.

    "What fella from the #Bible?"

    "You know whenever they all go to the garden, they hear the cock crowing, and one lad's all like, 'Here, I think Jesus is talking bollocks about being crucified', so #Jesus has to show him all his holes. Peter. Yous are doubting Peters."

    "God, there's lapsed #catholicism and then there's you." 🙈

  11. "Explore the medieval world of saints, relics and pilgrimage, and discover why people were willing to lie, spy and steal to get their hands on a piece of holiness. Uncover how someone officially became a Saint, what being a saint was really like, and the murky business of acquiring relics.

    I took a medieval history course in undergrad taught by a prof who really knew how to hold the attn of the hundreds of students doing their Western Civ requirement. He told great stories about fights over relics and how relics were stolen...

    The Blackening burns
    But it’s all okay.
    I wanted this path.
    I chose it, you’d say.
    And I can’t really get out of the way.
    So I have to burn me,
    So then I can play.
