W3 Prompt #221: Wea’ve Written Weekly

Intro

Dear friends,

Welcome to our W3 Poetry Prompt, which goes live on Wednesdays at The Skeptic’s Kaddish.

You may click here for a fuller explanation of W3; but here’s the ‘tldr’ version:

Part I

The main ingredient of W3 is a weekly poem written by a Poet of the Week (PoW), which participants read before participating in the prompt.

Part II

The second ingredient is a writing guideline (or two) provided by the PoW. Guidelines may include, but are not limited to: word counts, poetic forms, inclusion of specific words, and use of particular poetic devices.

Part III

After five days, when the prompt closes, the PoW shall select one participant’s poem as the W3 prompt for the following week, and its author becomes the next PoW.

Okie dokie ~ Let’s do this thing!

I. The prompt poem:

‘Screens of Tradition’ by Selma Martin

“El Gallo; La Dama; La Sirena; El Sol” — “¡Chalupa!”
A phone “Ping!” flashes—instant digital connection.
Grandmas and tech-kids play across a global screen.

II. Selma’s prompt: Let’s write a summer triolet

Summer is hot, sticky, noisy, melty—and perfect for a poem that keeps coming back around.

This week, let’s write a triolet: a playful eight-line poem built from repetition and rhyme.

The rhyme scheme is ABaAabAB.

The first line repeats as lines four and seven, and the second line returns as the final line. Only two end-rhymes are used throughout, so the poem loops back on itself like a summer thought you cannot quite shake.

Choose one of these summer moments:

• An ice cream cone melting faster than you can eat it
  My ice cream cone begins to melt
• The shock of jumping into a freezing swimming pool
  I leapt into the icy pool
• A mosquito staging a one-insect concert beside your ear
  A tiny buzz beside my ear
• The joy of biting into a cold slice of watermelon
  The sweetest slice of summer fruit

Or choose any summer theme you like: sunburn, sand in your shoes, a stubborn fan, a sudden storm, a lazy afternoon, or the glorious discovery of air-conditioning.

Stay in the shade, keep something cold nearby, and happy writing!

I’m doing great – that’s what I always tell
people, smoothing my face over all
the cracks, rehearsing calm until the
performance gets mistaken for truth.
My hands don’t shake, my voice stays even, but
that’s only the version I let myself tell.
Underneath it all, quietly, I miss you. I feel it
even now, though I keep bending the truth, keep leaning slant.

just one day of effort

some lives are spent unspent;
some amble, some jog, some
dig some deep cavern or
plant a grateful forest;
some live for just one day in all a life,
all a life, and
one meaningful choice –
some live. some die. some don’t do much of either.
some days pass. some days are passed.
some days need overmuch effort;
survived, tucked with tinsel in a
small paper bag;
some days are put away for later
and never taken out again.

Fragments

I leave behind 
a Fragment 
of Myself
in every moment
in every bond
with another
Until so many
are gone
that I have Nothing.
I am Empty
But 
with every fragment lost
there is something gained
a Piece
from someone else
that adds and builds
Until I become
a Mosaic
of every moment
of every laugh
of every tear
of every love
and I am more Full
than I am Hollow.
