The Day I ran my First Semi-Marathon
Reading Time: 3 minutesYesterday was cold and grey when I set off on my daily walk/run and my intention was to go up to Cheserex across to Tranchepied and then back down towards Nyon. I had no intention of running a semi-marathon.
The reason for which I ran so far is that I saw dog walkers and their dogs were not leashed. Years ago I was agressed by three dogs, one of them every time we crosssed paths, so now, if I'm alone, and I see a dog, I cross where the field boundary is, and then I continue my walk, run or bike ride.
Dog Walkers and My Running Detours to Avoid Them
It's not that I had a bad phobia of dogs, but that in one situation I was standing, unable to move, as a woman just watched me. She didn't leash the dog, she didn't do anything to help me. Eventually the dog charged me and I began to run. I then had the common sense to stop running and froze. After this incident my phobia of dogs, when walking alone was radical.
I never, ever, ever want to be so close to being mauled again. That's why I backtrack as soon as I see dogs in the distance and find another route.
It's relevant to how I ran my first semi-marathon. If the dog walkers hadn't been on the path between Cheserex and Tranche-Pied I would not have taken a detour, and if I had not seen a crowd walking around Tranche-Pied, then I would have headed down, and my run would have been short.
It's thanks to those dogs I saw that I took a détour. It's thanks to those people that I didn't head home. It's thanks to these people that I decided to try running to Divonne, and then I ran towards Céligny, and from Céligny towards Eysins. Without the dogs I'd have had a long run, but not this long.
A Cycling Route
I know of the connections between La Rippe and Divonne through cycling with two or three groups. It is by cycling with them that I discovered these alternative, lower traffic paths. They're good to know about because you can run, and cycle, without roads and cars for quite a distance.
A Slight surprise
When I ran from La Rippe to Divonne I was surprised to come out where I did. I came out right by the voie verte. From there I could have easily run to Crassier, and then back home, rather than run along the Lac de Divonne before crossing the border and towards Bogis Bossey and Céligny.
Through the Fields or through the Villages
I considered whether to run down to Céligny and then along the roads to Crans and then back up but chose not to run that route because of dog walkers. Dog walkers are just as likely on the route I did run but I could usually see them from a distance so I could easily avoid them.
In the end the route was perfect to achieve a 21km loop, with minimal walking to get home, at the end of the run.
Two Changes
When I run this distance again I will make sure to have fuel with me, in the form of either energy gels or the haribo style fruit things. I did this 21km run without water and without any fuel. The reason for this is that I had no intention of beating my distance record. It was a fluke occurence. I'm proud of this achievement but I will take a day or two to rest and recover. I don't want to end up injured.
And Finally
If I had run just 6km I would have reached the 100km mark, so far this year. By overshooting like I did I achieved two notable things. Furthest distance, and most running in a week.
I suspect that running in Spain, on those steep gradients, really helped me to get better at running in switzerland.
At this time I do not plan to attempt a marathon. I plan to do a few shorter runs. I don't want to overdo it.

A Spontaneous Ride to Mont Tendre Following the Wrong Route
Reading Time: 2 minutes
Yesterday I hesitated to wake up to go for the Coffee and Croissant loop. I decided to go anyway. This ride was at a relaxed pace. It's amusing. When I left home I could see a beautiful sunrise, with nice light, and clear skies. By the time we started the ride mist had come up and we were riding through humid clouds. It was so wet I saw drops of water falling from my glasses as they condensed during the ride.
After this someone suggested we go for another ride. I went home, re-charged my head unit for a few minutes, as well as my radar, before heading back down and starting the route.
Because it was at short notice I didn't draw the route properly. I relied on the swiss national swiss cycling signs to get us to where we wanted to get. I thought we wanted to follow route 7 but we wanted to follow route 1 and 46, before then heading up to Mont Tendre.
Route 7 goes to Vallorbe, but it doesn't go to Vallorbe via Marchairuz, it goes via the Route Des Montagnes, by the Noirmont. This means that we got close to where we wanted to get, on the wrong side of the Jura.
My memory had played a trick on me. We should have followed route 1, 63, and then 473 towards Montricher, and then up to Mont Tendre. I had expected route 7 to go up via Montricher. It would have been easy to check.
If you're cycling, you can draw a GPS track, and then follow it, but, if you study the cycling route maps, then you can follow the signs instead. This allows you to take roads that are usually quieter. Cycling without cars is more pleasant. I don't remember if any cars passed us along the top.
The route we took, although wrong was nice. Now I know that I could cycle to Vallorbe, if I had the desire to.
And Finally
If you cycle in Switzerland, and you want to use the national routes, rather than a GPS head unit, make sure you're following the right routes like you would when driving from Switzerland to Barcelona. It's Route 1, until it's route 63, and from this village we follow route 473, and then we follow the signs for our destination.By this method you can explore without a GPS, or have a backup solution, if you get lost.
And Finally, next time I will draw a route properly.

Strava Conversational Tools
Reading Time: < 1 minute
The sun is shining. For a day or two the grey Autumn weather is gone. This would be a good time for a spontaneous bike ride. The issue with this is that Strava is great for sharing activities that are planned in advance, and those that have passed. It's easy to get kudoes. It isn't easy to converse.
They have instant messaging but it is only available via the mobile phone app, rather than from the web interface. It is seldom used so to use it might appear spammy to use it like we use Signal or Whatsapp.
With the beautiful weather, and blue skies we have today, it seems a shame not to have a spontaneous social ride. It would be easy to say "hey, let's meet here at that time and go for a spontaneous ride. This is especially true since the weather could be bad for the weekend. It might rain for the entirety of Saturday and Sunday.
I suspect that weather, rather than motivation, is keeping people indoors. If the weather was nice people would leave their indoor trainers and enjoy the Autumn air, sights and sounds.
And Finally
I suspect that if Strava, and Meetup.com, as well as WhatsApp for events, became more conversational, so the amount of noise would go up, as well as the number of activities decline. Strava, and Meetup.com fill the niche of giving us a place to organise events, and then speak in person.
Twitter was great for online conversations that eventually resulted in tweetups, but those days are long gone, due to algorithms, and now AI bots making conversations between individuals more challenging.

Reading Time: 2 minutes
For years I did activities with people, usually not as an organiser for one very simple reason. Micro-managers. These are the people that have an opinion, and a schedule, that want to take control of a simple activity. These people take a spontaneous activity and make it a nightmare.
For me the entire joy of going to do a hike, or a Via ferrata, or other things is to decide on a meeting place, and time, and do it. The logistics of getting there and back take time, but once there it’s simple. Follow the signs, do the thing, head home.
Whether it takes three hours or six doesn’t matter, as long as we have enough water.
Many years ago I did a VF with someone that was really scared, and it took two hours for something that could have taken half an hour to fourty minutes. It never bothered me. I was in the moment.
It bothered others. They were not happy that it had taken so long so they headed for home when we finally finished.
For the first time in years I’m organising something. I thought it would be simple and relaxed but it has stopped being that. Now it has become complicated. Route A costs too much but Route B takes too long so we have to prepare plan C.
The model I’m using worked multiple times in the past, with no issues.
For every activity that I have done the logistics are simple. We meet at this point at that time and will do activity A. It’s only when diving that the plan sometimes has to be more elaborate, due to the associated dangers.
## And Finally
What I really pay attention to is the weather. That’s a place where I might say “did you see the forecast”. I will take rain gear in case of rain or hail, and quick drying clothes if I feel they are needed. I usually go with the flow, as a participant.
Now that this blog post is out of the way I can do some more research.
