Here’s my thoughts:
Spines of War and Peace and The BibleThe Bible
I went to a Church of England secondary school, although I wasn’t a Christian, but they did offer an excellent education that got me into a good university. It was mandatory to take “Scripture knowledge” lessons and the accompanying “O-level” exams. So I studied the Old Testament for a few years and then the New for a few years more.
The teachers were very good. They taught The Bible as a work of literature and explained that it was really an anthology. How to recognize the style of the various authors, even though translated by one committee for King James. Called “The Authorised Version” because it was the official Bible of the C of E and its head, the Queen, Defender of the Faith.
The contradictions between the different works in the anthology and their similarities. How three gospels were “synoptic”—Christ seen through one eye, and the other told from a different viewpoint.
I did not become a Christian but I did learn a lot about Christianity and some Judaism. And a lot about literary criticism. I finished it off in my own time, reading the books not covered in the lessons. It came in handy for talking with Christians, including Jehovah’s Witnesses at my door, who often didn’t know the Bible as well as I did. One pair got up and literally ran from the house when I showed them passages that contradicted what they were telling me.
But I’ve had enough now. I won’t read any of it again, except to verify a quotation if I need it.
War and Peace
I started this and found it a bit tedious at first, starting with a description of upper class Russian life that I couldn’t really relate to. But I tried again with a Librivox audiobook version while doing household chores, and got caught up in it, so went back to the print version. Meanwhile, I had been reading a few more older novels (Including Anna Karenina) and developed more skills in reading novels. So now I rate it quite highly as character studies and a keenly-observed illustration of an intersecting set of social systems which applies in many ways to the people and systems we see today. Of ways in which the people influence and are influenced by the systems in which they live, becoming almost different persons when playing their roles in different systems.
On my short list shelf for reading again, after I finish Middlemarch which I rate even higher, for similar reasons, but with funnier sarcasm.

U.S. National Book Awards Announces Longlists for Translated Works, Young People’s Literature
The 10 titles on this year’s Translated Literature longlist were first published in seven different languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Indonesian (appearing for the first time as a translated language in the category) Norwegian, Russian, and Spanish.
