  50. I never knew where the Americanism "balls to the wall" came from. It conjured in my mind an image of being forced, pressured or threatened, with one's face - and scrotum - up against the wall.

    Apparently it comes from the aviation context, "in reference to ball-shaped grips on an aircraft's engine controls ... Pushing these 'balls to the wall' would put the aircraft at maximum thrust..." (Wiktionary) - so, analogous to 'pedal to the metal'.

    The only connection with testicles is through folk etymology.
