PS takes its midcentury heritage very seriously (Modernism Week each year brings 100,000 visitors.)
The 1959 Bank of America building has undergone a total renovation, and looks fabulous.

"Tamed," Marian Wawrzeniecki, 1910.
An archaeologist, historian, ethnographer, and only incidentally a painter, Warsaw-born Wawrzeniecki (1863-1943) was a noted eccentric and a bit of a fraud.
From an artistic viewpoint, he had a very individual style; he'd had some training in art but abandoned the formal style he'd been taught and instead embraced his own approach. While classified as a Symbolist painter, he was really more of a Modernist, painting solely to achieve his own vision.
His work reflects Slavic folklore and mythology, often depicting witches and pagan gods, and he's considered a significant figure in the rise of Slavic neopaganism. Many of his works can be taken in multiple ways; this could be an illustration of a legend, or a symbol of humanity conquering nature or evil.
He did some fairly important work as an archaeologist, but also published transcriptions of assorted ancient and medieval documents that historians have since figured out he forged. Exactly why he did that is unknown.

Fascinating. David Jones is a hole in my reading that I will now make sure to fill.
This Folio book seems to be an especially fine edition. Good to have both the Eliot and the Jones intros. I love the calligraphic illustrations by Ewan Clayton, reflecting and elevating the text in the most sympathetic manner. (My wife once participated in some of Clayton's workshops, so there's an extra connection for me.)
Not all the Folio editions appeal to me; in this one, illustrator and editor seem to have aligned perfectly with the author and the text.

took a stroll down 1st Ave: there is something eternally elegant about the Secretariat building of the UN (and the whole United Nations Headquarters complex really) that makes it clear why people thought that International Style modernism was the way of the future, and points up how unfortunately low-effort and shabby so many knock-off boxy high-rises are.
The world being what it is, I suppose it’s understandable, but the UN Headquarters site is now deeply marred by all the security fencing and guard stations around it

W polskim krajobrazie wszędzie czają się duchy przeszłości. Zwykle ubrane są w modernistyczną architekturę. Pogardzane, zaniedbane, albo co gorsza upiększane na bezgustną modłę. Często są to wciąż czynne ośrodki wypoczynkowe, tak jak ten w Skarżysku-Kamiennej. Ich rozpiż w wielu budzi obrzydzenie. A we mnie głównie nostalgię i jakąś dziwną tęsknotę za przyszłością, która miała nastać, ale nigdy nie nadeszła.

Wir haben das Europaviertel schon vom Dach der Kathedrale aus gesehen. Nachdem wir den Kirchenturm erfolgreich wieder herabgeklettert waren, gingen wir zu Fuß durch die Altstadt und das Villenviertel ins Europaviertel vor das UFO des Europarats. Massive Moderne mit vielen Fahnen.

Alvar Aalto's Paimio sanatorium would be the perfect place for a #LongCovid recovery clinic - teaching patients pacing and energy management, allowing patients extended periods of rest in the sunbeds on the sun terrace, snow and cold water at hand for those trying to calm their vagus nerve, peaceful nature for restoration.
I so wish this was reality. Instead, of course, a spa and hotel on the horizon...
