  6. "Tamed," Marian Wawrzeniecki, 1910.

An archaeologist, historian, ethnographer, and only incidentally a painter, Warsaw-born Wawrzeniecki (1863-1943) was a noted eccentric and a bit of a fraud.

From an artistic viewpoint, he had a very individual style; he'd had some training in art but abandoned the formal style he'd been taught and instead embraced his own approach. While classified as a Symbolist painter, he was really more of a Modernist, painting solely to achieve his own vision.

His work reflects Slavic folklore and mythology, often depicting witches and pagan gods, and he's considered a significant figure in the rise of Slavic neopaganism. Many of his works can be taken in multiple ways; this could be an illustration of a legend, or a symbol of humanity conquering nature or evil.

He did some fairly important work as an archaeologist, but also published transcriptions of assorted ancient and medieval documents that historians have since figured out he forged. Exactly why he did that is unknown.

From the National Museum in Warsaw.

  12. Been waiting for this book: said it had shipped before New Year. Finally had brain power to remember to track it. Says it was delivered ten days ago - just found it where packages never usually left, under two storms worth of snow. At least I found it before today’s sleet starts!! Blarg. Have dried it off.

    Anyway — new #maphistory #cartography #modernism book!!!

  13. “A poem which – in a single Neruda-esque sweep – takes in the beauties of the country & the sufferings of its poor & then sets both against a vastly wider historic background … A triumph.”

( Time, the deer, is in the wood of Hallaig…)

“In ‘Hallaig’, in this poem, MacLean, as a Gael, stands firmly at the centre of his world, and, consciously, close to the end of his world. As a poet, he shows us that the particular horizon and times that happen to encircle him, encircle us all.”

  19. Malevich -- Suprematist Composition -- 1916

More than a century after it was painted, this picture still fills me with a sense of excitement about breaking through into a new visual language.

I'm not quite sure whether it should be tagged as #RussianArt - it was created when the Russian empire still existed - #UkrainianArt - Malevich was born in Kyiv, but he was an ethnic Pole and, as far as I know, never thought of himself as Ukrainian - or as something else.

  32. Who the heck bought all of that mid-century furniture when it was new, anyway? Hyperallergic takes a look. (Hint: most of the modern designers were male & white.) More complex, the meaning of these designs can be found in how the designs were advertised, how they were used to advertise other products, and how they appeared in the media. hyperallergic.com/639763/mid-c
