"Morning Glory with Black," Georgia O'Keeffe, 1926.
American Modernist painter O'Keeffe (1887-1986) is still respected and hailed as one of the great American artists, while also becoming something of a joke over the interpretations of her work.
She embraced Modernism in 1915 and much of her later work depicted natural forms in extreme closeup, reducing them to mere depictions of line and pattern. She was influenced by photography, likely reflected by her relationship and difficult marriage with photographer Alfred Stieglitz.
Many interpreted her work as representations of female body parts, and jokes about that still circulate. But she denied the interpretations and once said, "I have always been very annoyed at being referred to as a 'woman artist' rather than an 'artist'." She never considered herself a feminist but was always involved in women's rights and is still revered as a groundbreaker for women in the arts.
Sister Wendy Beckett once said there was a paradox: women artists are often overlooked and not taken seriously...but at the same time, what does the sex of the artist matter?

Babbitt claims that the gulf between "contemporary serious music" and the sensibilities of what one might term the common listener
>> is a result of a half-century of revolution in musical thought, a
revolution whose nature and consequences can be compared only with, and in many respects are
closely analogous to, those of the mid-nineteenth-century evolution in theoretical physics .<<The "revolution" mentioned by Babbitt is the break with the preceding tradition of tonality led by Schoenberg, Webern, and Berg.
That last composer crops up in an anecdote related in the NY Times article:
>>. I once asked a conductor what contemporary music he was interested in. He mentioned a piece by Alban Berg, who died in 1935.<<
The author comments:
>> Let’s try to at least reserve the word “contemporary” for music of this century.<<
Although the conductor's failure to "keep up" is amusing, his classification of Berg as "contemporary" does obliquely make the same point that Babbitt asserted with his talk of a "revolution" in music. Schoenberg and the Second Viennese School in general inaugurated a musical modernism with that the larger listening public still finds it difficult to come to terms with.
Why this difficulty persists constitutes an important and fascinating question, one to which I do not know the answer.

Die Rollei 35 ist so extrem klein und unauffällig, dass ich mit ihr auch gut meinen Weg in die Arbeit dokumentieren kann. In dieser Serie sieht man Bilder, die ich aus dem Wagon einer U1 geschossen habe. Hier sieht man ein Friedens-Murial „Woman with dove“ von Fintan Magee am United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) angebracht. Kurz vor der Einfahrt in die U-Bahn-Station Kaisermühlen VIC kann man einen guten Blick darauf erhaschen.

The elegant curves of Barbara Hepworth's sculpture really appeal to me.
I think I'm right in saying that her works are popular with the wider public in the UK and beyond. Perhaps viewers recognize that her unification ofthe vaguely biomorphic shape with the unambiguously modern is so appropriate for our era.
I'm sorry to say that I have not actually seen this 1951-1952 work, "Image". Is it in Tate Modern at London or at St Ives?
