"The View Toward the City," Torsten Jovinge, 1930.
Jovinge (1898-1936) was a Swedish Modernist painter who had a brief but influential career.
He called his style "Purism" and was seen to be influenced by Cubism, with his use of colorful shapes in his work. But rather than distorting his subjects, or playing with perspective, he represents in his own way. He breaks them down into shapes but still retains some shading and texture.
His works were popular in his home country and were an influence on Swedish Modernism. He did a number of works set in various parts of Europe. He began painting and developed his style in the 1920s, traveling in Paris and other areas, and staying mostly in Sweden and Denmark in the 30s.
In 1936, he decided to travel to Morocco to paint, and during a stopover in Seville he was found shot to death in his hotel room. Spanish authorities, at the time caught up in the Spanish Civil War, claimed it was suicide, but the general agreement is that it was murder for unknown reasons.

Babbitt claims that the gulf between "contemporary serious music" and the sensibilities of what one might term the common listener
>> is a result of a half-century of revolution in musical thought, a
revolution whose nature and consequences can be compared only with, and in many respects are
closely analogous to, those of the mid-nineteenth-century evolution in theoretical physics .<<The "revolution" mentioned by Babbitt is the break with the preceding tradition of tonality led by Schoenberg, Webern, and Berg.
That last composer crops up in an anecdote related in the NY Times article:
>>. I once asked a conductor what contemporary music he was interested in. He mentioned a piece by Alban Berg, who died in 1935.<<
The author comments:
>> Let’s try to at least reserve the word “contemporary” for music of this century.<<
Although the conductor's failure to "keep up" is amusing, his classification of Berg as "contemporary" does obliquely make the same point that Babbitt asserted with his talk of a "revolution" in music. Schoenberg and the Second Viennese School in general inaugurated a musical modernism with that the larger listening public still finds it difficult to come to terms with.
Why this difficulty persists constitutes an important and fascinating question, one to which I do not know the answer.

Die Vereinten Nationen haben es gerade nicht einfach. Das sieht man auch am Gebäude. War die UNO City in Wien zuerst das Zentrum des Neuen Wiens in Kaisermühlen, ist es jetzt ein gestrandetes Raumschiff inmitten von gläsernen Egotürmen der großen Corporates. Hatte die Stadt ein Konzept verfolgt und wurde hier einmal ausnahmsweise groß gedacht, zeigt der Fleckerlteppich rundherum, dass der freie Markt von Planung nichts versteht. Diese Zeiten sind vorbei und der Politik fehlt die Vision. Vertane Chance. Die Welt würde funktionierende Vereinte Nationen benötigen, stattdessen haben wir dysfunktionale Nationalitäten gekaufter Hohlköpfe.
