"Flowers and a Female Head," Dorothea Maetzel-Johannsen, c. 1921.
Maetzel-Johannsen (1886-1930) was drawn to art as a child as a way of coping with poor health, including rheumatic joint disease and heart trouble. Born in Germany, she trained as a teacher and taught drawing and art until her marriage; under the laws of the German empire at the time, married women were not allowed to work as teachers.
Setting up a studio in Hamburg in 1921, she became involved in the New Objectivity movement, an art movement that was a reaction against Expressionism, rejected romantic idealism and engaging with the viewer and the world in a practical manner.
Her work began to sell, and she started to have some significant commissions, when her chronic heart trouble claimed her, just after an operation that attempted to deal with her problems.
Her art was more or less forgotten for decades, but now is being rediscovered and viewed with new eyes.

"Flower Meadow in the North," Harald Sohlberg, 1905.
Norwegian painter Sohlberg (1869-1935) painted in what is now called a Neo-Romantic style, depicting his love for his native land.
The rectangular field of flowers is arresting enough, but your eye is drawn to the small farmstead, and then beyond that the river and the pale sun hanging over the hill....perhaps this indicates that it was late in the evening of a Nordic summer?
I can find annoyingly little biographic information about him, but I want to investigate his work further. Scandinavian arts (aside from Edvard Munch) get little attention....
