Practitioners, the Ministry’s preachers. Except, not.
In truth, they are sadistic torturers wielding fire who seek out those with magic, killing them outright, or taking them to Knoss to have their lifeforce added to the crypt vessel.
For a while, I also called them “the unseen” because their faces were hidden, but it was confusing so I went with the innocuous name only
Be everwell.

A meal in fiction is never just a meal. What characters eat, how, with whom, and what they refuse tells the reader about culture, class, psychology, and power with no exposition at all. The last food scene that stuck with you was not the description of the dish; it was what the food meant.

Currently #Reading Gabriel Wyner's Fluent Forever for the second time. It's also the FIRST time I've (re)read a book I've BOUGHT twice. This newly revised edition is sufficiently different to the first edition to make it worth the purchase. Some very useful suggestions for #LanguageLearning #Bookstodon
The revised edition does contain A LOT of promotion for his own language-learning app, but since he doesn't 'sell' the languages I'm learning, the promos are irrelevant.
Also much praise of ChatGPT etc as language learning tools
Since AI is actually Large LANGUAGE Model, I'm ok with that specific and narrow use of LLMs. I use a smallish LM on all my mobile devices for text-to-speech, but it's strictly local, on-device. I will never voluntarily use a non-local LLM because data-centres are climate-destroying evil hellspawn.
Those caveats aside, the book is a great resource for learning to think about language learning generally, with principles that are widely applicable -
