New translation up!
Tomo gets her grades back, but they aren't as good as Chiyo's - it's alright, Yukari said it's not too important for society. Then, the girls get together for a Christmas party!

@Bamurubi
Not sure I'm qualified to guess whether that would be possible, or whether it would struggle to define its own scope, or gain any influence, or whether it would turn into its own translation project, or what, but I'm sure the OET would appreciate more collaborators!

@TMakarios
Thanks for this link. It is good to see an effort to diminish distortion.
I wonder if it would be 1) possible and 2) desirable to have some oversight group about English Bible translation choices, a bit like the French Academy that oversees what is and isn't proper French language.

Aufbauen nach Anleitung? I guess not. 😂
Meine Güte, es ist eine Perle, die mir meine Freundin Anke da geschickt hat. Ich lieeebe solche schräg übersetzten Bedienungsanleitungen oder Produktbeschreibungen. Jetzt noch gelesen von Coldmirror, das wär was. 😅
Viel Spaß damit, liebes Fediverse. Auf dass das Foto viele Menschen zum Lachen bringen möge.

I would like to see names in English Bibles spelled so that we say them the way they were most likely said originally. There are so many distortions the way we do it now. How many people know that Judah and Judas are the same name? Or that Jesus and Joshua are the same name, and neither bears much resemblance to how it was actually said?

Sehr praktisch im Urlaub, wenn man auf Datenstaubsauger wie Google Lens verzichten möchte:
Die recht junge App "Offline Translator" ist schon verdammt gut! Text, Bilder, Dokumente - komplett offline. Keine Anfragen werden an externe Server gesendet.
https://github.com/DavidVentura/offline-translator
Killer Feature ist die Live Video-Übersetzung. Eben wie Google Lens, nur datenschutzfreundlich. Das gab es meines Wissens bisher nicht als freie Software in der Qualität.

[edited for typos and errors]
I’ve recenlty made a repayment (from savings) to the ATO against my #StudentDebt.
About 10 years ago, I got it into my head to go back to UNI. I worked for 2 years on a Master of Translation (Adv) at ANU, and I enjoyed every minute of it only to come unstuck at the very end. With less than a semester of work to do I hit a wall. Well several walls in fact.
The first was that I ran out of courses to study within the School and didn’t want to undertake something I wasn’t interested in.
The Second was finding out that my thesis could not be the translation and publication of a book I wanted to do, it had to be something which would advance translation research to qualify. I did find another way to do that and my idea was to research whether “Livres de Gares” (aka airport novels) were purposely written for translation and whether these had similar linguistic characteristics which could be computationally determined.
My Supervisor and I thought it would be a good project and I genuinely felt enthused about it. That is until I dug deeper into it. It required me to fork off into Digital humanities to obtain expertise in linguistic computation; coding, scripting, parsing and tagging text as well as applied statistics. The more I looked into it, the more the whole thing looked like a multidisciplinary project. I was defeated (allowed myself to be defeated?) by the amount of work and more importantly, the cost in terms of stress and finance. I couldn’t afford either.
I’ve just had a look at my #HECS-HELP statement… only $35,000 or so to go…

Got another "translation job" offer today.
Except it wasn't a translation job at all.
It was training AI.
For pay that, where I live, wouldn't even reach minimum wage. But of course it was dressed up as "freelance contracting," because apparently exploitation sounds fancier if you invoice for it.
No.
I'm not helping build the machine that's already taking work away from translators while paying translators less than they deserve to teach it.
I'd genuinely rather earn nothing than spend my time feeding your slop machine.Hard pass.

小首をかしげる means "to slightly tilt one's head", a common gesture to express mild confusion or skepticism. The 小 refers to the movement being slight, not to the head/neck being small.

Adding to my Books of Interest:
*If This Be Magic: The Unlikely Art of Shakespeare in Translation* by Daniel Hahn
From the New Yorker:
"This rich and often funny book, by a translator of Portuguese, Spanish, and French, investigates one of literature’s most challenging endeavors: replacing every word in a Shakespeare play with words from another language while having the result remain the Bard. [...]

1/2 "Daemons of the Shadow Realm" is a mouthful, while "Yomi no tsugai" is nice and short. I am somewhat unhappy with the translation since it's missing the additional info that the daemons come in pairs. My spontaneous idea would be "Mates from the Underworld"

How my #cat learned to purr in two languages.
"Mriya" (this was also the name of the world's largest plane that was destroyed by the #russia) means "dream" in Ukrainian — and it happens to sound like purring: mrrrrriya.
Rewriting the book to English, I needed the same trick. Turns out "dream" purrs too if you drag it right: drrrrream.
Some things translate better than words ever could.
But not the same)))
