  5. 夫市之无虎明矣,然而三人言而成虎。

“That there are no tigers in the marketplace is a given, but if three people say ‘tiger!,’ then a tiger pops into existence” (in the mind of the listener) — Han Feizi’s version of the boy who cried wolf

my first-pass glossing is rather idiosyncratic — 夫 is “hwæt” and 矣 is (modern Mandarin) 了 because that’s easier and clearer than trying to map it to a specific English morpheme

  6. AI-Translation: Opportunity or Danger for Multilingual Families?

If a translation app can help your child understand their grandma's words, does it actually matter that they used one? I think it does — and as both a language professional and a bilingual parent, here's why the difference between understanding language and truly feeling it is everything.

  8. libretranslate.com/

seems to be down, the last weeks they limited the service to registered users because of bot attacks. 😬

Any recommendation for a free online translation tool?

(doesn't even have to be perfect... AI free or at least privacy-respecting would be great, though)

  9. "#RavKook’s exceptionalism lies in the fact that his ideas remain relevant even in 2026, reinforcing the impact noted above.

This enduring influence is especially evident in his #writings, which present unique challenges in #translation. Anyone who has used a Soncino translation of the #Talmud knows that translation can leave one with still a long way to go in figuring out the meaning of the original text.

#Rabbi #AryehSklar has addressed this challenge in Rav Kook’s Guide for Today’s Perplexed (#KodeshPress). More than just a translation, #Sklar’s edition includes extensive footnotes to fill in many gaps, adding essential details and context not apparent in the original text.

Adding further depth to the work, the #book itself has a fascinating history. It remained an unpublished #manuscript for more than a century before #Rabbi #ShacharRachmani released it in full in 2014 as For the Perplexed of the Generation (LeNevuchei haDor)."

  14. "#RosenZvi has done a wonderful job, aided by #DanielTabak’s astute #translation, of #writing a work that, while academically rigorous, remains accessible.

While a 10-year-old can start to learn #Mishnah, there’s a complexity, sophistication, and depth of thought that is not readily apparent to a 5th-grader. The truth be told, it’s not readily apparent to a lot of people.

Rosen-Tzvi has written a masterpiece of a #book that uncovers the many layers of Mishnah and #Midrash, revealing that these are sophisticated, deep texts, carefully constructed intellectual systems.

One can’t understand #rabbinic #Judaism by reading these #texts superficially; one needs to grasp the rules, structures, and assumptions that underlie them. In How to Read the Mishnah and Midrash: An Introduction to Early Rabbinic #Literature, Rosen-Tzvi shows how to do that."

  16. @0xabad1dea you very well pass what a good translation needs to be. My reference in that domain is Patrick Couton fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_

He has a really awesome talent to find the correct French image, the correct french similar sounding location, the correct slang. Exactly what you explain with your color and stars etc.
    It's just amazing.

And so Pratchett will remain one of the English author I prefer to read in my own mother tongue 🤷

  18. Hivemind: help me do live captions and translation of my presentation.

    Context:

I have been doing a series of presentations called "AI for the confused" -- I've done these around Saint Paul at libraries and senior centers.

At one senior center, there was a deaf attendee. She used an iPad with a live service that did an audio to ASL video call.

Yesterday, I spoke at a senior living complex in Frogtown with a large population of immigrants and nonnative English speakers. See the flyers they posted for my talk! And indeed there were a couple folks there who I think were Vietnamese speakers who were not fluent in English.

I would love to have live captioning and translation.

I do the presentation with reveal.js slides in a browser. I also use regular chatbot sites to demo things, and even will pull out my phone and show how you can have Gemini use the camera.

So it would be nice to have a general system audio input get translated and
    displayed OSD-style.

Right now I use an older Macbook (Intel chip), but there's a reasonable chance that I'll get that upgraded soon.

So, obi-wan-hivemind, you are my only hope. What options are out there? What services, what platforms (something on Linux would be oh so lovely; Windows-only solutions are, to me, almost certainly not viable). It doesn't need to be free, as I can likely access a bit of funding through my institution -- either Macalester or St. Olaf, or even some general public service funding.

    - the build properly runs on Arm machines
    - the issue related to repeated requests for access rights is gone.

  20. RE: stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/1

    Hey fediverse, happy Monday!

In case you missed this, over the weekend I made a mini zine version of jointhefediverse.net.

You can print it here: jointhefediverse.net/zine

It's available in almost 30 languages, just like the website.

But I need your help translating the zine page itself!

  22. added to the New Living Internet Translations page, and fixed a missing cite on another entry. xn--hmr.net/classicalchinese/l

also uh, fixed an embarrassing CSS issue, namely that the nice serif Chinese font was not loading because its filename was misspelled, but I didn't notice because my browser was successfully falling back on my desktop's installed version of the font :neodog_blush_hide:

  23. And it shows the reasoning under the segment so the translator can argue with it. Both the pro-AI and the anti-AI camps in localization disagree with us. Translators don't. 25. The context section of Kagi Translate is meant to provide additional context to help with getting a translation that fits the intended context. However, I suspected that meant it was actually a way of delivering instructions to the LLM, and I was not wrong.

This started off very handy. KT will happily correct for typos in the input, or even outright mistakes, and produce the output it statistically infers that you want. So when I mistakenly used “pudé” (I did) instead of “pus” (I put) in a sentence, it incorrectly translated to “I put” in the output, because statistically that was more likely, the other wasn't grammatical in my sentence so wouldn't have appeared in any samples. Which is fine if you're translating to understand something, not so much if you want to see if you wrote the right thing.

So I went into the context section and added, “Translate the meaning of what is written, not what you think the author meant.” And sure enough, it correctly translated my incorrect Spanish, errors and all.

I’ve had less luck with persuading it not to hallucinate word definitions based on a typo’s similarity to a real word. In Mexico “abonar” is “to buy on credit" or “to buy in installments”. “Avonar” is not a word at all, but it sounds the same, and when I first heard the word, I wasn't sure which was correct. KT didn't help, because it made up a similar definition for “avonar”. So I thought it was correct when it wasn't. I've tried putting “Do not fix typos” in the context instructions, but I think it needs something more complex. Maybe asking it to run all the words through some other step.

But then I began to wonder. What about the classic test of LLMs? Can it generate a Python program?

    Yes, Virginia, it can.

P.S. Don't get me wrong, this is an incredibly useful translation program. Especially for understanding country-specific words and slang. And it does have a “proofread” feature which catches some (but not all) input errors. But GIGO still rules.

  27. Some learning takes time: that odd language button in the post field.

As I post mainly in English, it's my default. I never changed it in posts! Did you know that it sets the possibility for your readers to get translations?! And more. I didn't.

Set it to the language of your post! I write German, I change it to German = my English-speaking followers get a translation. I don't do that: no translation service.
