What a weird day so far. Went to Charles street dole office to show up that I am still alive; 10 minutes, out I went.
By the bike rack there's a Chinese bloke refitting the dropped chain on his bike I asked if he needed help. he said no, OK.As I am about to go, he comes over and speaks to me in Chinese, I do not understand a word. So he spoke into his phone which then translated. really weird language, he spoke on the phone which then came up with a series of Chinese writing and spoke in English. Amazing.
Spent about an hour having a chat with this bloke, in his fifties, from Shangai, said his son was a student here, he was here on holiday as his country his much too hot in Summer. Weird that.
Anyway it all went almost well, he asked if this was a school, no it isn't but it is student accommodation, then said this city is not much to write home about, I agreed.
Asked if there were flea markets nearby I said no, not near, and gave him direction to Sully, where there is a market on sundays unless it's raining.
And that was that, goodbye, have a nice day - in Chinese sounds really weird and beautiful, Off I went on my bike, at a certain point realized I did not have my spectacles on. ACH! I said to myself, where are they? not hanging by the neck chain I wear, not in the pockets, not on the bike bags. I went back and forth twice on the road to find them, not a sign, not a shadow, no specs smashed under car's wheels,
u nothing.
not a shade.Went back in the office, asked the security, then to the desk, none. Nothing. Weird.
Back out again, walked up the road gain, again nothing, not a piece, nothing. At this point though is it possible I forgot them in the flat? So returned to the flat, searched the usual area and other parts, nothing, no specs. Gone. Vanished. Completely. WTF?
Really strange to lose one's specs; doesn't make much difference nowadays, still...

Friends, I swear this is not going to be one of those infernal, infuriating blog posts where the author apologizes for the lengthy interval since their last post, even though it’s been over a year. I’ve been writing this blog, on one platform or another, since 2004, and I’ve gone longer than this between subsequent entries. It is, as the kids say, what it is.
Truth be told, a lot has happened since we returned from our bike tour last spring, and none of it found its way here.
I won’t get into specifics, but suffice it to say that while things have settled down for now, the past 8 months have been challenging. So much so that I have decided to retire from my job as a freelance translator. Sometimes, life sends you messages, and in my experience, you ignore them at your peril. I had been planning to retire next year anyway, and our financial advisor assures us that retiring now is eminently feasible. Working another 6 to 8 months would not make an appreciable difference to our situation, so here I am: footloose and fancy-free.
On top of that, like almost every other profession, the field of translation is undergoing profound changes right now. Some feel that AI is an extinction-level event for human translators. I believe that, like vinyl records, human translation will never go away completely; but the demand for it will become (is becoming) an increasingly niche market. So jumping off this train before it crosses the ramshackle bridge seems like a good bet.
What’s next? Well, in the short term, I’m adjusting to life as a retiree. While retirement has been something I’ve been anticipating for years, there’s no hiding the fact that it’s a major transition. I’ve never been one to measure my self-worth by my work, but now that “work” is no longer part of the equation, I have found that the idea of “productivity” has, despite my conscious efforts, insidiously wormed its way into my identity. It’s like waking up one morning and discovering you no longer cast a shadow. There’s this eerie absence that will take some getting used to.
For now, I’ve consciously decided to leave the slate blank, so to speak. I want to give new forms of lifestyle the opportunity to colonize this new land. I don’t know what the future will bring, but I hope it’s at least somewhat surprising and challenging. I do know that I want my life going forward to be filled with art. Translation was a great career for me, and I’m grateful to have stumbled into a profession that allowed me to earn a living by scratching my writing itch in a way that was somewhat creative. But the artist inside me has never been given the energy and focus to truly flourish.
It’s time to change that.

A recap of my last 24 hours. Dead-tired after a sleepless night, but I talked to a customer anyways.
Then, having discussed of Obsidian in another situation, I discovered I misunderstood the term "vault" on @quillforall translation, because the term has two meanings in two different contexts. Credential vault is one thing, the vault used on QUILL is kind of organization where files reside and connect with each other.
I sent another pull request with the fix, and it returned 12/13 tests passed. Compiling and checking were all smooth, who knows what happens!
Then, I struggled with WordPress Full Site Editing and MultiSite network but I'll talk about it in another day. I think it's time to say that the world could turn upside-down now, and I won't hear it at all! -
