New translation up!
It's the beginning of January - and it's particularly cold out! Yukari decides it's probably best that she doesn't go out, it's too cold for her.

#QuestionOfTheDay what's the worst thing that a hero character in a work of fiction you like has ever done?
(You can either answer this straight up with spoiler tags and the name of the character, what they did and the name of the series/story, or you can answer with just what they did and then follow up with the other information in the nested post. But please include the information somewhere so people not aware of the character/series can know)

An Analysis On The Otaku Choice Awards
So, the Otaku Choice Awards for this year are upon us. It’s time once again for Filipino otaku to cast their votes on the best things that happened inside the community within the past year or so. With that said, normally I don’t pay attention to these awards, but now I do.
Not because I got nominated or anything, but because I got curious about how these nominations even work.
Apparently, the Otaku Choice Awards committee would open up a Google Form for nominations. The form is composed of two categories: the non-award category and the award category. What do I mean by this? It means that the first part is basically composed of the best shows, movies, and other otaku culture-related media that the Filipino community consumed in the past year and a half.
That section of the awards isn’t that important to me since, at the end of the day, that section of the OCAs is just as “useful” as their Crunchyroll counterpart. Now, where these awards shows can have repercussions on the community’s overall state is in the latter half of it.
The latter half of the Otaku Choice Awards revolves around the people and events inside said community. The main purpose of this section of the OCAs is to recognize those people and events that entertained the scene for a year and a half.
This is where I can see the problem with OCA’s nomination system. At the Oscars, the Academy would give people in the industry a ballot on which they could nominate individuals in their specific field.
On a similar note to OCA’s, Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Awards would allow subscribers of the said newsletter to nominate and vote for their favorites in specific categories.
Unlike the Observer’s method, though, the OCA’s nomination form is open to everybody via a Google Form.
The Otaku Choice Awards process:1. Categories are determined based on previous awards and by the OCA Panel2. Nominations are posted online and are submitted via Google Forms3. After the nomination period closes, nominations are tallied and evaluated.4. The top 5 for each category are tallied and evaluated to determine whether they qualify for the category.5. Each qualified nominee is sent a notification asking whether they accept the nomination.6. Final nominees are selected after nominees accept the nomination.7. The voting form and announcement is posted online.8. After voting closes, the votes are tallied and evaluated (removing invalid votes, if any)9. Winners are announced during Day 1 of Pinoy Otaku Festival. There is no OCA Panel intervention on the voting as this is pure votes from the community except for tabulation (summarized already via Google Form graphs)
The intervention of OCA Panel on nominations is only for evaluating if nominees are valid in the category, tabulation, and ensuring nominees are informed of the nomination and accepted it.With that in mind, the floodgates are open for certain bad actors to hijack the nomination polls and put in the names of undesirables in the community. Think about it, imagine a known serial pedophile getting nominated as “best cosplayer.”
As for how the winners are being chosen, and perhaps the biggest flaw in all of this, in my opinion, the votes are 100% community-based. Where’s the problem in that, you ask? This voting system is prone to manipulation because they also use Google Forms for people to cast their votes. It would then damage the credibility of the Otaku Choice Awards, something that has not yet been tainted.
Another thing that I would like to point out is how they do background checks on the nominees. On the one hand, I like how the OCA committee is taking the time to personally contact the selected nominees. They would message the nominees via Facebook Messenger, asking them questions related to the category they’re nominated in. On the other hand, there must be a better way to conduct such background checks. It would take a lot of time for the OCA committee to send Facebook DMs to every single chosen nominee. Not only that, but each committee member might ask questions deemed unnecessary by others.
There’s also this matter of what really constitutes being qualified as a nominee. I am saying this not in a cosplayer sense, because all of them are qualified to be there.
It’s some of the other categories that I have a problem with.
Look at the “Outstanding Otaku Event,” for instance. One of these things is not like the others.
The thing is, OtakuPopFes happened just recently, while the other five events nominated here happened last year. Not sure if they stated this in the nominations form, but in my understanding, when we say “outstanding otaku event” at an awards show, it should only cover events that happened within the last year. Then again, they might be considering events that happened within the past year and a half, which would qualify OtakuPopFes as a nominee since it only happened in March of this year.
There should also be a separation between content creators and media organizations within the community. This year’s outstanding content creator has two media organizations along with three actual content creators. Although both sides create content, their purpose for creating content is what separates “media” from “content creators.”
These are just some of the things I would like to call “stuff the OCA committee has to fix.” Some of them might be nitpicks, but some of them are actual problems that the OCA committee need to improve on. Especially when it comes to the nomination selection, the committee should have at least a set of pre-planned questions for nominees, then they can ask additional questions on their own if needed.
A more secure platform is also needed for nominations and voting. As secure as Google Forms can be, it’s security measures can be easily bypassed through using mutliple Google accounts as well as going through incognito mode. I’d suggest to use something like SurveyMonkey, as it can provide IP-based tracking. No amount of incognito mode can bypass that.

At the end of the day, I respect Red Cloud Interactive’s decision to conduct an awards show that cater to Filipino otaku, and that they have been doing this for years. Thing is, there are things that need improvment and for this to continue, and to get more traction that it already has, they have to take a look at the state of the awards and fix what needs to be fixed. -
