Charmy’s Army, the Comic Strip — Defective Detectives — Chapter 6: Sunday Closed: When a Case Gets Cracked Wide Open
<<< Previous COMIC strip NEXT COMIC STRIP >>>In this week’s comic strip, the grand mystery of Fort Hill reaches its uproarious climax. Doc finally wanders into The Candy Bar in his white lab coat, having heard through the grapevine that the gang was frantically scouring the base for him. When Frenchy blurts out in panic that they assumed he was kidnapped because he didn’t show up for work, Doc delivers a deadpan reality check: it’s Sunday, and he doesn’t work on Sundays! Instead of feeling foolish, Charmy and the gang proudly declare that they’ve cracked their very first case—prompting Doc to dryly observe that something is definitely cracked, and it certainly isn’t the case!
The afternoon light illuminated the tall, lanky figure of Doc standing in the doorway of The Candy Bar, his head reflector perched on his messy hair, his lab coat slightly wrinkled from a relaxing morning off. He carried a rolled-up Sunday newspaper under his arm and a bag of cinnamon rolls in his hand, looking like a man who hadn’t experienced a moment of danger in his entire life.
“Doc!” the entire team yelled in unison.
Flimp scrambled across the counter, leaping onto Doc’s shoulder and chattering wildly, tugging at the medic’s lab coat to check for bullet holes or ninja dart wounds. Weaver let out a breath he felt like he’d been holding since eight o’clock that morning, while Frenchy clutched her head mirror in utter disbelief.
“I heard you guys were looking for me,” Doc said slowly, his voice dripping with tired, world-weary skepticism as he looked over the bizarre ensemble before him. “The postal clerk ran past my bungalow screaming that a gang of trench-coat-wearing lunatics was rounding up suspects in the town square.”
Frenchy stepped forward, her eyes wide with dramatic urgency. “When you didn’t show up for work today, we figured you had been kidnapped! We investigated the bartender! We checked your credentials! We consulted an accredited Etsy physician! Weaver almost had Father McGee administer base-wide absolution!”
Doc stared at Frenchy. Then he stared at Weaver’s oversized coat. Then he stared down at Charmy, who was puffing out his chest with the smug confidence of an ace private eye who had just saved the free world.
Doc took a slow sip from a paper cup he was holding and sighed. “It’s Sunday. I don’t work on Sundays.”
The entire room froze.
The bartender burst out laughing from behind the counter, leaning over the soda fountain and wiping tears from her eyes. Weaver’s antennae drooped so low they nearly touched the floorboards. Flimp slowly stopped grooming Doc’s ear, looking down at his magnifying glass with profound embarrassment.
Charmy, however, didn’t flinch. His brain, hardened by years of dodging military discipline and spinning absurd situations into personal victories, immediately recalibrated the facts. He looked at Doc, then looked at Weaver and Frenchy, a brilliant, scheming grin spreading across his face.
“Oh… um… you know what that means…” Charmy whispered, his eyes lighting up with manic triumph.
Weaver blinked, bewildered. “What what means, Charmy? It means we wasted our entire day off playing dress-up while Doc was eating pastries!”
“No, you fool!” Charmy shouted, throwing his arms in the air and doing a little victory jig on the barstool. “We cracked our first case!”
Frenchy’s face instantly shifted from confusion to jubilation. “We did?! We solved it! We tracked the missing person down to this very room! The Candy Bar Detective Bureau is undefeated!”
“We cracked it wide open!” Weaver joined in, completely swept up in the delusional momentum of the moment. “Doc is safe, Fort Hill is secure, and justice has been served!”
Flimp began banging two empty sugar shakers together like cymbals, screeching in pure, chaotic celebration. Frenchy held up her novelty Etsy diploma like an Olympic gold medal, waving it proudly to the empty corners of the tavern.
Doc stood completely motionless at the counter, watching the four misfits rejoice over an imaginary abduction they had invented and solved within the span of six hours. He slowly set his cinnamon rolls down on the wooden counter, rubbed his temples, and looked over at the bartender with a look of pure medical despair.
“Um… something is cracked,” Doc muttered dryly. “And I don’t need a medical degree to tell you it’s the four skulls standing in front of me.”
“Nonsense, Doc! That’s just the sound of pure investigative genius at work,” Charmy proclaimed, tipping his fedora back and slamming a nickel onto the counter. “Bartender, a round of chocolate milkshakes for Fort Hill’s finest detectives! Put it on Doc’s medical supply expense tab!”
As the team celebrated their imaginary triumph, the sun set over Fort Hill, bringing an end to one of the silliest cases the base had ever seen. The mystery was closed, the trench coats were bound for the back of the closet, and tomorrow, whether they liked it or not, Monday morning drills were waiting.

#QuestionOfTheDay what's a fictional food that you would want to try?
It has to be fully fictional, not something you can make irl (i.e. not just a recipe that came from fiction) and also not real life food with fictional properties (e.g. Quickstep or other blended drinks from Dead Rising, etc)
Examples would be like Gagh from Star Trek or Lembas from Lord of the Rings
