And I'm still listening to 'Pandora's Star' by Peter F. Hamilton on audio as a reread.
I've finally encountered MorningLightMountain! I get the sense that this book largely exists to set up the conflict and action that we see in the 2nd book. Still don't know if I'll follow-up with the second book. After this I'm going to do a horror book (any recs?) and then probably a big fantasy book after Spooky Reads.

I did just finish reading, 'The Infinite Sadness of Small Appliances' by Glenn Dixon.
This was a great little book that starts almost feeling like a technological version of a house and its serving staff (Watch and Scout very much have a butler vs new maid type relationship at the start). And then turns darker and deeper at how technology can take control away from us.
It hits on some solid topics, but doesn't quite explore them deep enough. -
This week I'm currently reading the Jul/Aug 2024 issue of 'Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine' (I think).
I'm a bit between books since I finished the book for one book discussion at the end of August and waiting for a book to be selected for early September. I want to get them out of the way before launching into Spooky Reads 2026. So I figured I'd tackle my pile of back issues.

Sometimes my birthdays say, slow down and care for yourself only. Stop trying to do all the rest. This be one of them.

I'm also still listening to 'Pandora's Star' by Peter F Hamilton on audio.
This is a reread for me, but I had forgotten how tiresome some of the plots in this book are. Not sure if I'll continue the series on audio after this one. I don't even really like the narrator.

I forgot to share my #FridayReads yesterday!
I'm currently closing in on the end of 'The Lady of the Lake' by Andrzej Sapokowski.
From what I can tell, this is supposed to be the last book in the main Witcher saga, but there are 2 more prequels published after.
This has been an incredibly frustrating book because it is all over the place and has a needlessly complicated narrative structure.
I sort of see what Sapkowski was going for, but it really fails for me. -
Where are all of my #StephenKing die-hards? I'm re-reading The Talisman (I think this is my third or fourth journey through this particular tale - it's an old favorite) in preparation for Other Worlds Than These. In Ch. 13, a two-headed parrot makes an appearance, and I'm wondering if it's the same one owned by Flagg in Eyes of the Dragon (or its Twinner). These coincidences aren't always really coincidences, after all. IYKYK #Books #Bookstodon #FridayReads #Horror #Fiction @bookstodon

I am also still listening to 'Pandora's Star' by Peter F. Hamilton.
I had really forgotten how long it took this book to get to the actual plot of the series. I've been listening for about 10 hours and it's still not there.

This week I'm reading 'The Lady of the Lake' by Andrzej Sapkowski, the fifth full novel in The Witcher series.
I'm interested in the story (although this one seems so much more horny than the previous books which never shied away from sex), but the structure of it is needlessly complicated. It's rather a frustrating read because the author refuses to stick with a plot or even a timeline with any consistency. Everything is just being talked about secondhand.

The #book I’m reading at the moment is Norwegian writer, Merethe Lindstrom’s Days in the History of Silence. A novel that starts with one of the most chilling opening scenes I’ve ever read and mellows into a slow burn about repressed trauma and the silences that feed it. Really enjoying it so far. #FridayReads #bookrecs #bookstodon

And the SF-palooza continues for #FridayReads because on audio I'm listening to 'Pandora's Star' by Peter F. Hamilton.
I wanted a long SF book to balance against all the fantasy I've been listening to on audio. This is another reread for me. I had forgotten how long it takes to actually introduce the main antagonist in this series. But I've always been a fan of Hamilton and the galaxies he creates, so it's fine just reading about all the little stuff.

Since I finished that, I get to start a reread of 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' by Douglas Adams for another book discussion.
This is probably one of my most reread novels, I've forgotten how many times I've read it now (must be at least 10-11). Not only is it hilarious comedy and satire, but it is also damn good SF book on its own merits.

Been a while since I shared my #FridayReads
This week I finished 'The Martian' by Andy Weir. This was a reread after 10 years for me. I earlier said that I felt the movie ultimately was better than the book. I still believe this, but it doesn't mean the book isn't good. It kept me up to 2:30 am the past 2 nights in a row (I'm so tired right now), which I consider one of the highest compliments I can give a book.
