The feeling she had severely wronged him was very strong within her. She could have simply said “yes” but something inside demanded she be more convincing than mere words. With an effort she got herself on to her feet. She was weak but strong enough for this.
On her bare feet she shuffled across to where he sat. He looked like he was about to stand which would have ruined everything; he was too tall. “Stay,” she said and placed her hand on his shoulder, then she leaned forward, tilted her head to one side and kissed him firmly.
When she lost her balance and fell forwards, he caught her.

She nodded, worried again.

But you would never see one of these women at the Sunday services.
“You’re new,” said a woman’s voice from the shadows inside the first room. Everywhere was in shadows. They dared not make a light for fear of being shot at by the enemy, and besides which the supplies of candles and lantern oil were low.
“I am looking for Deirdre.”
“A Scottish lad, eh? We don’t get many of your sort.”
“Madam, I am not here for your services. I am here to speak with Deirdre.”

She wanted to tell him to stop, to consider how it would be for her if he was killed. But she did not; how could she ask a brave man to contradict his very nature? To negate the thing that made him what she loved? So she held her tongue and suffered whenever he was gone.

Over on the bed, Mafdet, his cat, blinked once, twice, then stretched to fill an even greater space. The light from the oillamp Maius had brought into the room flickered on the myriad of cat hair wafting around her whenever she moved.
Maius put the lamp down on a low cupboard and, crossing his arms in front of his chest, stared broodingly at the gladiator figurines lining the shelf.

This time I thought, “Ingrid Bergman, Casablanca, but we will never have our Paris.” For a minute, a mournful mood settled on me for what could have been.
