Some thoughts on #theory I had today.

Theory is always intersubjective. This is true, whether the theory is #standpoint-aware (as found in #feminist theory, #Black and #Indigenous theoretical traditions, and other lineages) or not. Theory as such is accessible to people with a social and historical positioning outside the writer’s own positioning. People may quite likely not get the point, the relevance, or the implications of a piece, but they can get there if they want to and are willing to put in the work needed. That makes theory a bridge between living worlds and a tool for collective #world-building from below. And maybe that is its most important function.

If I say "they can get there," I do not mean that theory is per se particularly #accessible let alone accessible for everybody. There are obstacles that are theory-internal, like #epistemic-whiteness, that can and must be tackled from within theory-building. There are also obstacles of access based on certain types of education required to read theory. These are, to a certain extent, theory-external. They behave in a similar fashion to knowledge of a language. It requires resources to learn a language, and there are many people excluded from learning and thus using it because the necessary resources to learn the #language are withheld from them.
