Retro Gaming Ads Blast – Part 43

Welcome back readers, fellow geeks and electronic gaming fans!

In this edition of the Retro Gaming Ads Blast (RGAB) series, we will take a look at another batch of retro gaming print ads from the 1980s to the 1990s.

For the newcomers reading this, Retro Gaming Ads Blast (RGAB) looks back at the many print ads of games (console, arcade, computer and handheld) that were published in comic books, magazines, flyers, posters and newspapers long before smartphones, social media, the worldwide web and streaming became popular. To put things in perspective, people back in the 1980s to the 1990s were more trusting of print media for information and images about electronic games and related products.

With those details laid down, here is the newest batch of retro gaming print ads for you to see and enjoy…

1. Taito’s 4-in-1 Print Ad

There is nothing like taking the clever approach of promoting multiple video games using only one single print ad in the size of a single page. Taito did exactly that in the 1980s when it promoted Elevator Action, The Legend of Kage, Arkanoid and Renegade for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) promising excitement as the mentioned games were making the jump from arcade to console. What is very notable in Taito’s single-page print ad was that it did not show any screenshots of the games. Instead, they used hand-drawn artwork to emphasize each game’s theme or setting, and leave it up to the viewers’ imagination as to how those games would look like on NES. This old ad is intriguing and amusing at the same time.  

2. Chase H.Q. II: Special Criminal Investigation Print Ad

Following the huge success of the original Chase H.Q. on both arcade and consoles in the late-1980s, the sequel Special Crime Investigation was released in the arcades in 1989 and ported to game consoles and computers in the early 1990s under the title Chase H.Q. II: Special Criminal Investigation. To promote Chase H.Q. II: Special Criminal Investigation for home computers, game publisher Ocean came up with a colorful print ad showcasing a few cars, a city background and elements of gun-related action presented in nice art. The ad has an image of the original arcade machine to remind gamers that they are playing the sequel to Chase H.Q.

3. Dancing Eyes Japanese Arcade Flyer

Released by Namco in Japan in 1996, Dancing Eyes is a puzzle arcade game that became notorious due to its overtly sexual nature. With the way it was designed, players control a small monkey called Urusu-San and crawl along a 3D grid mapped over characters (mostly ladies) or various objects. If the 3D grid is mapped over a young lady, any tile of the grid destroyed by the player exposes the lady’s underwear or skin. Such sexuality is reflected in the arcade flyer of Dancing Eyes which has a suggestive hand-drawn art on the front while the game’s mechanics are explained in the rear. Even the rear of the flyer shows sexual nature of the game with screenshots. While the game was officially released only in Japan, Dancing Eyes actually was made available for gamers to play at the arcade of X-Site amusement center inside Festival Mall in Alabang during the early 2000s and it attracted a lot of guys. I bet Namco did not know about that.

4. Sega Saturn North American Print Ad

When the Sega launched the Saturn console in America roughly four months ahead of schedule in 1995, the company suffered as the sales were disappointing, ties with business partners were strained and the available Saturn games were very few. By the fourth quarter of that year, more games became available for the Saturn and this gave Sega the opportunity to aggressively market the console as the one that gamers should get for their enjoyment. To promote the Saturn, Sega came up with a two-page print ad that had a dominant image of a naked woman whose private parts were cleverly covered by screenshots of the available games. Since most gamers were predominantly male from teenagers to adults, it made sense for Sega to come up with an eye-catching sexy ad to promote their console and the video games (including those from other companies). This old ad is considered by the woke and rabid feminists as very offensive today.

5. Blockbuster Video Print Ad

Back in the late 20th century, Blockbuster Video was the dominant retailer that offered customers movies in home video format for sale and for rent. Along the way, the company offered video game rentals and attracted millions of gamers around the nation. Given the tremendous growth of video gaming in America in the 1990s, Blockbuster got itself more involved by launching the Games of Summer Sweepstakes in 1996. Utilizing print ads, the sweepstakes offered the Ultimate Game Rooms – composed of a 41-inch big-screen TV, Surround Sound speakers, hi-fi VCR, NBA Jame Extreme arcade game, the Sega Saturn, the PlayStation, a gaming chair, Acclaim games for Saturn and PlayStation, and a 1-year free Blockbuster Video game rentals privilege – as the grand prizes. Do you know anyone who won in Blockbuster’s sweepstakes?

6. Independence Day (ID4) Print Ad

Remember how big a blockbuster Independence Day (ID4) was in cinemas in 1996? The film grossed over $800 million worldwide and it revived the disaster movie genre using modern filmmaking techniques and the latest technologies of the decade. Given the massive success of the movie, it was not surprising that an official video game adaptation was released in 1997. To promote the game, Fox Interactive (the video game company of the movie studio behind the film) came up with a 2-page print ad using official artwork from the movie showcasing the alien spaceship being attacked by a military fighter plane. The ad showed only 3 screenshots and the descriptive text was written to make gamers feel like they have the role to lead Earth’s fight against the aliens. While the art looks good, it can only go so far to hide the mediocrity of the game itself.

7. GoldenEye 007 Print Ad

When GoldenEye achieved both critical and financial success in movies, it revived the James Bond movie franchise big-time and Pierce Brosnan was easily accepted by the public as the newest Agent 007. Several months before the movie was even released, an official video game adaptation started development. After much revisions and hard adjustments, the project evolved into a first-person shooting game for the Nintendo 64 console titled GoldenEye 007. To promote the game, Nintendo came up with a 2-page print ad that cleverly showed Brosnan as James Bond on the left and displayed the screenshots and other details on the right. This ad was easily eye-catching and it made lots of gamers excited. As history showed, GoldenEye 007 got released in 1997 and became a huge critical and commercial success while also proving that first-person shooters on game consoles can be a lot of fun.

8. North American Sega Saturn Games Promo Print Ad

As mentioned earlier, the Sega Saturn had a bad launch in America in 1995 which caused a lot of problems for the company. In 1996, Sega of America went on the offensive to really capture gamers’ attention by launching their Saturn games promo. The message of this 2-page print ad was very clear…Sega offered one free first-party game (limited to four specific games including Nights into Dreams) to those who bought two games (from a lineup of twelve specific titles). It should be noted that the Christmas season of 1996 was the most successful sales period of the Sega Saturn in America as gamers really responded to the promo. Even though some called this promo an act of desperation, nothing changes the fact that Sega succeeded during the most critical sales season of 1996.

Beginner-friendly: Es gibt immer auch Rätsel und Aufgaben für Anfänger*innen.
Für einzelne Challenges, wo es bestimmte Tools braucht, helfen wir uns gegenseitig beim Einrichten der Umgebung. Für manche Challenges ist es hilfreich, eine virtuelle Maschine und/oder die Software Docker am Laufen zu haben, aber es gibt auch genug Auswahl, wo das nicht der Fall ist!

Auch Leute, die sich schon gut auskennen und Erfahrung mit Cybersecurity-Challenges haben, sind herzlich willkommen! Let's connect and learn from each other!

Texas A&M is banning #Plato, citing his “#GenderIdeology.”

"Today, Texas A&M resumes classes for the spring semester—but a number of canonized texts will not be welcomed back to school. The public research university has lately been caught in the crossfire between state and stupid.

As The Texas Tribune has reported, faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences were informed just last week that 'a new system policy restricting classroom discussions of race and gender' is set to take effect today.

The policy, engineered and approved by the Texas A&M University Regents last November, requires that the school’s president sign off on every syllabus with an eye to scrubbing 'problematic' content. But the foes were loosely framed.

Under the new restrictions, gender ideology is defined as 'a concept of self-assessed #GenderIdentity replacing, and disconnected from, the biological category of sex.' Race ideology entails 'attempts to shame a particular race or ethnicity' or anything that 'promotes activism on issues related to race or ethnicity rather than academic instruction.'

As a European history professor pointed out at the time, this wording could effectively prohibit a professor from teaching about the Holocaust.

The regents used AI analysis software to audit syllabi for unapproved content. Thanks to this rude mech, 200 courses have been cancelled, stripped of core curricular credit value, or forced into revision.

The hammer came down over the weekend for assorted religion, film, ethnic studies, sociology, communications, and literature classes. And in a truly-beyond-parody move, a philosophy professor, Martin Peterson, was told to 'either remove ‘modules on race and gender ideology' ' from his course, or be reassigned to teach a different class entirely.

Most philosophy nerds will recognize the 'gender ideology' readings in question, which are lifted from the Symposium. The university apparently quibbled with Plato’s reference the the 'Myth of #Androgyne,' in which #Aristophanes describes three genders.

Most musical theatre nerds will also catch the reference—the same myth was called up in #JohnCameronMitchell and #StephenTrask’s epic ballad, 'The Origin of Love,”'from Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Even as we note the rise of smoothbrain rhetoric sea to sea, the fact that Plato has been deemed inappropriate for an Introduction to Philosophy course is a surreal escalation of terms.

Meanwhile, A&M students are set to be deprived of so much recent world. Including but not limited to 'literature with major plot lines that concern #gay, #lesbian or #transgender identities,' #feminist and #queer film, or #race and #ethnicity as a subject…fullstop.

As Abby Monteil at them reports, these curricular restrictions have all trickled down from the Trump administration, which continues to dangle federal funding as a carrot for universities compliant with its agenda. We simply hate to see it.

Elisée Reclus: Fünf Ebenen sozial-ökologischer Praxis

Seine überzeugende und realistische revolutionäre Vision zeigt die Voraussetzungen für eine befreite Welt

Am bekanntesten ist Reclus für sein Werk „Neue Universelle Geographie“, ein 20-bändiges, 18.000 Seiten starkes Werk, das als größte #Einzelleistung in der Geschichte der #Geographie gilt. Reclus gilt weithin als Begründer der Sozialgeographie. Sein letztes #Werk, „Humanité et Terre“ (Menschheit und Erde), war eine 3500 Seiten umfassende Synthese aus Geographie, Geschichte, Anthropologie, #Philosophie und #Sozialtheorie und ist sein nachhaltigster Beitrag zum modernen #Denken. Das Werk beginnt mit der Aussage, dass „die Menschheit die Natur ist, die sich ihrer selbst bewusst wird“, und ist eine umfassende Darstellung der gesamten Geschichte der #Menschheit und der Erde sowie eines gemeinsamen planetarischen Schicksals, das sich durch ein tiefes Verständnis des großen Verlaufs der #Geogeschichte offenbart.

#Reclus' Geschichte der Menschheit und der Erde hat zwei Dimensionen. Die eine ist seine Darstellung des Prozesses der #Selbstverwirklichung des Menschen in dialektischer Wechselwirkung mit der #Natur. Er zeigt, wie das natürliche Milieu die menschliche Entwicklung prägt, während die Menschheit gleichzeitig zur Entfaltung und Blüte der natürlichen Welt beiträgt. Er zeigt, dass der Inhalt der Geogeschichte eine #Dialektik zwischen den schöpferischen Kräften der Freiheit und den einschränkenden Kräften der Herrschaft ist. Seine Idee, dass alle Phänomene der Geschichte sowohl progressive als auch regressive Aspekte enthalten und dass jede Tendenz sorgfältig analysiert werden muss, ist eines seiner einflussreichsten Konzepte.

Reclus zeigt, dass der historische Fortschritt vom Wachstum der gegenseitigen Hilfe (l’entr’aide) und der sozialen Zusammenarbeit abhängt – Ideen, die seinen jüngeren Kollegen #Kropotkin stark beeinflusst haben. Reclus behauptet, dass die vollständige Selbstverwirklichung der Menschheit in der Natur von einer sozialen Revolution abhängt, die mutualistische Praktiken in einer freien, egalitären, anarchistisch-kommunistischen Gesellschaft verwirklicht. Außerdem meint er, dass das Schicksal der Erde davon abhängt, ob die Menschheit soziale Institutionen und Praktiken aufbauen kann, die eine tiefe Sorge um die Natur und alle Lebewesen auf dem Planeten zeigen.

Die andere Seite von Reclus' #Weltgeschichtsdarstellung konzentriert sich auf die lange Geschichte der #Herrschaft. Queen of Vietnam’s last imperial monarchy: Nam Phuong Empress (1914-1963). Her ordained name translates to “Fragrance of the South,” a fitting title for a woman ahead of her time, whose virtues, charm & charisma still linger with us to this day.

Daughter of one of Vietnam’s wealthiest 20th century families, she was born Marie-Thérèse Nguyen Huu Thi Lan. A native of Tien Giang Province, the queen-to-be was a French national, having been sent to an exclusive Catholic boarding school in Neuilly-sur-Seine, at age 12.
1.75 meters tall with Eastern features, Nguyễn Hữu Thị Lan was a great beauty. Legend has it that she was crowned Miss Indochina three times. 

In his memoir Con Rồng An Nam, or Dragon of An Nam, Emperor Bảo Đại expressed his enchantment for his wife, “Lan had the beauty of a southern girl, tender and captivating. She enchanted me.”
For this reason, he later gave her the title Nam Phương, which, according to the emperor, means Parfum du Sud, or Perfume of the South.

According to historians, the royal family of the Nguyễn Dynasty were vehemently against this marriage in the beginning. To allow a French-educated woman who practiced a western religion to become the queen of a Confucian-influenced nation was unprecedented.
Emperor Bảo Đại was more than willing to break with precedent.

Nguyễn Hữu Thị Lan’s family also responded to the emperor’s proposal with conditions that made things even harder to accept.
All of these requests were unprecedented in Vietnam’s monarchy.

First & foremost, Nguyễn Hữu Thị Lan should be crowned as queen consort, or empress, on her wedding day. Secondly, she should remain a Catholic & all of her children be baptized & made Catholic. Most importantly, the couple must obtain permission from the Pope in order to let the emperor practice his Buddhism & his wife practice Catholicism.

Despite his mother’s disapproval, the emperor managed to meet most of the conditions & marry the object of his enchantment. What’s more, he agreed to renounce polygamy & take her as his only lawful wife.
In his address to the royal family, the emperor made his point clear, “I’m marrying for myself, not for the royal court.”

The wedding took place in March 1934, without the approval of the Vatican.
At Thái Hòa Palace, Nguyễn Hữu Thị Lan was crowned as the empress of An Nam, and titled Empress Nam Phương. He also broke a long-standing tradition by allowing the empress to wear yellow, a color unique to the emperor only.

Recalling this unprecedented historical event, Emperor Bảo Đại wrote:

“Yes, I made my wife queen in this marriage, even though queenship is a title usually given to a king’s wife only after her death. She was wearing a royal robe, a pair of upturned toe cap shoes, and a puffed bonnet embroidered with gemstones. That was the first time in the history of An Nam that a lady walked into the palace amid the ceremonious reception of the royal court. All by herself, she walked into the grand hall and waited for me there, sitting on a low wooden stool.”

After the controversial marriage, the royal family refused to let the newlyweds reside in the Forbidden City. Instead, they stayed inside Kiến Trung Palace. The interiors of this place were later remodelled in French style to become more modern & comfortable for the two who were already accustomed to Western lifestyles.

After his abdication on August 25th 1945, Emperor Bảo Đại had an affair with Lady Bùi Mộng Điệp, a Buddhist from northern Vietnam. Even though an official wedding between these two never took place, Lady Bùi Mộng Điệp was recognized & favored by the royal family. She was known to be very respectful & resourceful in organizing Buddhist-themed public events in the palace.
The relationship between the empress and the emperor slowly fell apart.

Empress Nam Phương had five children with Vietnam’s last emperor, whom she brought with her to France in 1947. They were Crown Prince Nguyễn Phúc Bảo Long, Lady Phương Mai, Lady Phương Liên, Lady Phương Dung, and Prince Nguyễn Phúc Bảo Thắng.

The royal family resided in the castle Thorenc in Cannes, a property of the empress’ family. Sometimes, the emperor travelled to France to visit them.

The empress passed on at the age of 49, without any family members by her side. In the last years of her life, she expressed her wish to have her body buried in Dalat, near her parents’ tombs, but her children didn’t agree with that.
Her funeral was carried out in such a quiet and simple manner that made it hard for the spectators to believe that the person lying in the coffin was a queen.
