Cuidado, de Raymond Carver: cuando arreglas el oído y no el matrimonio
Sigo con Catedral. Normalmente voy creando entradas sobre los relatos que me voy leyendo, para tenerlos frescos mientras avanzo en el libro, y el último que he terminado es «Cuidado». Después de «Vitaminas» y «Plumas», este es de los más tristes que llevo, aunque tenga momentos casi cómicos.

Lloyd es alcohólico y acaba de separarse de su mujer, Inez. Vive en la habitación de un ático diminuto e intenta controlar la bebida sin conseguirlo. Carver no necesita explicar mucho más: con la habitación, con la botella, con el silencio, ya deja claro que aquí hay un hombre que se está cayendo a pedazos despacio.
Él e Inez, según cuenta Lloyd, antes casi se leían el pensamiento. Ahora ya no consiguen ni hablar bien.
El oído que no destapa
Lloyd tiene un oído taponado de cera. No oye bien, y encima pierde el equilibrio. Lo intenta arreglar a golpes en la cabeza, sin éxito. Cuando Inez lo visita, prueba con una lima envuelta en un papel, y tampoco. Al final, un poco de aceite templado que le presta la casera es lo único que funciona.
Es un detalle casi ridículo, y ahí está la gracia amarga de Carver: mientras los dos deberían estar hablando de su matrimonio, se pasan la escena entera peleándose con un oído tapado.

Inez se presenta después de dos semanas separados, con un vestido de primavera que Lloyd no le había visto nunca. Va con la intención de hablar de algo importante entre ellos, seguramente de cómo sigue esto a partir de ahora. Pero el oído de Lloyd se lo impide: toda la visita se va en resolver ese problema tonto, y la conversación de verdad queda aplazada.
En cuanto el oído se destapa, Inez se marcha rápido, diciendo que ya hablarán con calma, más tarde, comiendo juntos. Lloyd se queda solo, aliviado por el oído, pero no por nada más de lo importante. Abre una botella de champán, e intenta convencerse a sí mismo de que esta vez sí, de que va a poder con todo.
¿Alguna vez habéis usado un problema insignificante y tonto para no afrontar uno de verdad? Contádmelo, tengo curiosidad.
