    But as an old bookworm I was immediately reminded of Theodore Sturgeon's short story "Shottle Bop", even though I haven't read it for at least 30 years, probably 40.

    It is, of course, an example of the kind of magical shop that you stumble upon, make a mysterious purchase at, and can never find again. It's a trope, in other words.
